Speculation: Patriots could trade JC Jackson

Doug Kyed, shortly after SB53:

Statements about Patriots rookie cornerback JC Jackson can tend to sound slightly hyperbolic. That being said, a member of the Patriots organization told me this week if JC fully buys in mentally, he'll be better than Stephon Gilmore.

So....the Pats may look to trade an ascending, borderline shut-down CB with the size to match up with physical WRs and even some move TEs and who is dirt cheap, in what has become a passing league....

Why is this speculative BS worthy of a thread?

What a dumb idea.

Gilmore is in his prime. JC is his replacement. Dumb article.

Plus JoeJuan is looking at a suspension so I highly doubt they are looking to trade Jackson.

makes no sense, he is on a UDFA contract, why trade him.

Jackson is NO way the replacement for Gilmore. Gilmore is signed for longer, and is going nowhere. Jackson is our starting CB opposite Gilmore and is an RFA next year. We will either sign him for another year at the top RFA amount (no much for a top starter) or get a rounder in return.

There is no reason to trade Jackson now.

I believe the logic is this: Gilmore's contract runs out after 2021. The Pats don't have to break the bank for Jackson until 2022. So they keep Jackson as "CB2" while Gilmore's here, and then Jackson takes over as "CB1."

Well duh, he is on his rookie contract. Of course it is shorter. I think he is the long term plan at CB.

OK, fine. The PLAN is to sign Jackson to a mega contract in the next year or so and let Gilmore go. I am really glad that you guys are the folks who are actually planning for the patriots.

My PLAN would be to re-sign the best CB combination in the NFL for as along as we can. Both are among the best starters in the NFL. Both are #1 CB's. We need backups and replacements for both; there are not replacements for each other, not now or in two years.

Wonderful straw man. You just made up and argument and won it against yourself. Bravo.

Now, back to what I was suggesting before you made up trash. My hope is we keep both, and here is how. The Pats are one of the few teams that will be least affected by the salary cap adjustments coming. I do not think we will see a mega contract for JC next year. It is in his best interests to ride out the strange market that is coming and look forward to a larger payday. Give him an extension to get him happy and past 2023. Let Gilmore walk and get a 3rd round comp for him once his contract expires. Work out a long term with JC. He is only 24 with a great future ahead.

My suggestion is not horrible, unrealistic, or poor. Instead of having a civil discussion you just need to shoot me. Why? You will win arguments that you make up every single time. I never said let Gilmore go. I am really glad you just invent what people are saying and then blast them even though they never said it. Again, bravo. I pity such hatred. Peace.

Why can't he be the successor to Jason McCourty, who likely has 1-2 years left in the tank?

J-Mac, D-Mac, and Chung are all getting up there.

Yes, peace. There is no hate here, just very strong disagreement. I don't want let Gilmore go. I don't see why Jackson would sign anything but a major contract next year, or a one=year contract.

The thread title is "Speculation." No one wants to let Gilmore go. He will be 33 in 2023 and coming down from prime. It is not likely that the Pats give him another big pay day. JC may not sign a major contract because he may not be offered one with teams cutting and scrambling to under the new cap. Give him security. We are looking at a low cap for a few years. It will be a mess.

I always thought that the idea was to acquire good, young, cheap players--not get rid of them.

This speculation is Jonathon Jones 2.0. Media and some fans need to put down the controller for Madden. He's not going anywhere this year or next as he's a restricted FA.

Actually I could see it. Frankly Jackson is more valuable to half a dozen other teams than he is to us, because our secondary is so loaded. If you wanted a return in talent and picks JC might be one of the better guys to trade.

IMHO, I rather we keep Jackson than trade him. The headline in the article is very misleading.

New England Patriots Trades: J.C. Jackson - Last Word on Pro Football
I read this the other day and thought it was one of the worst articles I’ve ever read.
It surmises that the patriots are short cap room so they will trade the cheapest, best value player they have.
It’s the opposite of what the organizations philosophy had always been.
There are no sources, or even rumors just some dude who was sitting in moms basement had a dumb idea and wrote about it.

Since the Patriots own his rights next year as an RFA and can give him a first-round tender for only a few million, the return in a trade would likely need to be more than a first rounder this year for it to happen. Why trade him for just a first this year when you could tender him NEXT year and just not match any offer sheet that comes in? And you’d still get this year out of him in that scenario. So, again the price is probably somewhere around a first + a third at a minimum and I doubt anyone is paying that at this point when they could wait til next year to sign him to an offer sheet if they want him that badly, or just wait 2 years and get him as a free agent.
