The Mahomes contract doesn't really kick in for a year or two, right?

Maybe I am guilty of looking at the headline numbers but I have seen from other posters that between Mahomes and now Jones plus future players Hill/Kelce , there may not be much left to go around ....but I will be the first to admit I do not have enough knowledge of "the cap" to fully understand this

Cap has always been crap. Teams manipulate it all the time.

so they can keep up with jones?

Mahomes' is still only $5.5 million on this year's cap, so despite the recent contract he got it just hasn't hit yet.

Tough to know exactly where KC stands for 2021 since I don't know the terms of this deal, but if we assume a cap hit of $20 million next year, that puts KC at #29 in cap space available next year with about $15 million in space and 47 signed (according to OTC.com, including their projection of the 2021 cap which seems to me to be very much up in the air).

They're screwed if the cap goes down.

It’s ok, the defense still isn’t top 10. Don’t get me wrong, they are the champs and a very good football team, but they aren’t world beaters just yet and this contracts helps the cause of them not getting anymore elite talent. They’ll still get the guys that will take less to win a ring in the meantime but for now, just score a lot of points and control the clock will keep you in the game.

this is why teams will have a hard time matching the Patriots success over the last 20 years. Patriots don't over pay for ANYONE and that creates a solid team roster from top to bottom. Other teams pay a couple of guys top dollar and fill out the rest of the team with JAGs because they have no money left. This is why i laugh when people say the Chiefs or (insert team here) are the next dynasty. There wont be another dynasty because teams are paying 30% of their roster all the money.

Perfect, a fat contract for everyone in Kansas city. Will see how it all works out for them.

Exactly. Their GM finished the easy part with extensions to star players. Now lets see how they navigate keeping the middle class and depth despite the cornerstones getting paid.

Chiefs won’t be a 20 year dynasty, but they are set up well to be among the SB favourites for the next 5 years or so.

Eventually Defenses will figure Mahommes out.

Why’s that? Did they figure Brady, Manning, Brees, Marino, Montana, Elway, Staubach, Wilson, Rodgers, and countless other all-pro QBs out?

As long as Mahomes has a strong supporting cast the Chiefs are contenders.

They’ll need to be a top 5 drafting team to stay atop the league. Drafting from the lower positions in the first round. With every big money deal, it makes the margin of error lower for obtaining blue chip young talent better than anyone else. Scratching my head at the idea of building a team like this...you need to let these $20M guys go. It’s like they learned nothing from the Patriots and Seahawks.

I understand why you need to back up the Brink’s truck for Mahomes and maybe a few other cornerstone players, but they are paying market for all their big contributors now.

In this modern nfl, does a team need a great tight end to win a super bowl?

what happens to kc if they can’t pay their tight end and he bolts?

Yes. And they adapted and expended their arsenal each time they got "figured" out! That's what makes them all-time greats.

BB game-planned perfectly for Mahomes twice. He adjusted both times at the half (kudos to Reed as well). Tells me he might be one of the great.

To his credit take Brady out of that and count the rings those guys didn’t have dynasties or multiple championships

As long as the big contracts stay on the field, they should be ok for a few years. I think huge contracts are a risk. Yes, many teams are more than willing to take that risk, but it’s rarely a good long view approach.

Having said that, most teams can only stay relevant for a few seasons in the NFL, so perhaps this makes sense for KC - knowing the window usually closes quickly.

A cap that tumbles if/when revenues slow this year and a key injury (or if Hill decides to pummel women & children again) would be a huge hurdle.
