Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes agree on 10-YEAR Contract Extension

You all are just ignoring the fact he was going to make something like $32MM over the next 2 years. This is the leverage KC had which they used wisely because 2 years from now, they would have had to pay way more. Something the Cowboys failed to do.

The upside for Mahomes is he gets a fat contract 2 years ahead of schedule that guarantees $124MM for injury. The one factor every player dreads which could derail his career and potential earnings.

Normally I would say KC took on a lot of risk but they essentially decided the $124MM insurance they bought out on him and the bonus structure gives them a reasonable out in case of buyers remorse.

A win/win for both.

The deal is not all that bad for either side, especially 2020 when there will be big revenue drop due to COVID-19.

Look at it this way, Brady got a $50 million guaranteed deal for two years and Mahomes essentially got a $63 million guaranteed deal for the first three years with incentives to do well and stay in KC.

Patrick Mahomes

If Andy Reid retires or Mahomes declines due to injury, the Chiefs can cut him before the 3rd day of each league year from 2025 on and minimize their exposure. Those cap hits are huge, however, if they keep him. The Chiefs need to stay very focused on the health and skills of their offensive line from here on out.

This deal will prove to be the poison pill for KC. It's not just Covid but the NFL capitulating at every turn on the political front which will hurt their fan attendance (whenever it comes back) and viewership. Teams make these deals with the assumption the cap will keep going up like a balloon every year. Unfortunately that balloon just got popped in 2020 big time.

It will be $400M.

If he signed with the Pats, this board would be like:

"well....there's no guarantee he starts".

"He's never played in this system".

"Can he beat out Hoyer and Stidum"?

"He has to earn his spot on the team".

"Is he humble"?
All perfectly reasonable questions too

The cap hit for the first 3 years is palatable

2020 5 million and change
2021 25 million rounded up.
2022 31.5 million.

Looks like the Chiefs have a window to win before the big money hits Mahomes. I just do not see how the other Chiefs players do not become jealous and want to be the highest paid too.

They will Jones, Mathiu, Kelce, and Hill all need to be paid with 2 years

They just extended Hill I believe. If they can work with Jones everyone else is replaceable.

Unless the NFL (King in US) ****s the bed, this is a good deal for KC.

Yeah Hill took that lowball deal before the season when most people assumed the NFL would suspend him for breaking a child’s arm or whatever new horrible thing he did at the time.

History tells us that no team has ever won a Super Bowl with a QB that accounts for anymore than 13% of the teams’ salary cap. The last QB to do it was the GOAT in 2018 and he was at 12.4%. Mahomes deal averages to be 22% of the cap and of course that percentage could be much, much higher depending on how far revenues tank in the coming seasons due to COVID.

Something else to consider, the probability of Mahomes getting injured also goes up because his team will be weaker and he will feel he has to do more to cover for the deficiencies by extending plays and taking off running.

The whole idea of increased salary cap was to spread the money around. Instead we are in a situation where the NFL is turning into a "haves" and "haves not" league. QB's are making now up to $50-million a year. meanwhile you have guys making a couple hundred thousand rounding out your roster.

and with only so much money to go around everyone else will get less.

That is the way life works. When you're the best at an extremely difficult position to fill you're going to be paid to reflect it.

I mean, Mahomes is clearly the best QB in the league right now... but ill smile as the wheels start coming off the Chiefs as they lose their top tier players due to salary cap issues

That offense also looks completely different when Tyreek Hill is out with injury (or suspended for beating little kids)

There should be financial incentive for being the best at what you do, but c'mon, this is kind of a ridiculous disparity. Do you also think billionaire CEOs deserve every penny?

No but I wouldn't necessarily say those guys are the CEO's because they're the "best" businessmen at the company. Some guys are running dad's company, some played politics to get there. I think being the best QB in the league is far more black and white than being the best businessman at your company. You might be the best in your department but would be terrible doing what your coworker in another department does. Quarterbacks have tangible metrics and when you see the worst QB in the league vs the best the gap is huge.

Mahomie just hit the Powerball :D
