Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes agree on 10-YEAR Contract Extension

I wonder if Mahomes & his agent decided it best to strike now, before anyone shows up to camp based on the virus and its effect on (1) having a season (2) the salary cap lowering...

I’m not sure this is the year I’d want my salary dependant on the cap. The league will not make as much profit in 2020 as it has in the past.
He won an MVP one year and a SB the next. You’ll never have higher leverage than that. A year later and the allure of a SB wears off. Maybe you get an injury and it’s your second year in a row with an injury and they hold it against you. Maybe you can’t maintain your stats next season. Maybe some other player shows you up next year.

Right now the team is high on you and won’t jerk you around

Big question is can they still afford CJones? He took their D from crappy to slightly above average.
Mahomes doesn't need a NE/Buff caliber D to win a SB. But it's got to be at least as good as it was last year.

Hahaha welcome to cap hell. New dynasty ends in 3-2-1......

I think it actually helps set a ceiling. Now teams know what number not to go anywhere near for Dak and DeShaun.

Lamar's too early.
The reality is it probably doesn’t effect them. Mahomes is unique so 10 years is a risk worth taking. Those guys will be willing to bet on themselves for a short time frame
2nd year QB that lead his team to the playoffs both years. He has a similar year and he'll be due.

Definitely effects them Lancer. Per year, guaranteed, ceiling ...

Was Bledsoe the last player to sign a 10-year deal?

PLUS: N.F.L.; Richest Contract Goes to Bledsoe.

"Drew Bledsoe signed the biggest contract in National Football League history, agreeing to a 10-year, $103 million deal that virtually guarantees he will spend his entire career with the New England Patriots. The deal surpasses the reported 10-year, $100 million contract signed by Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre last Friday.

''I've expressed over and over again my desire to play my entire career with the New England Patriots,'' Bledsoe said. ''It looks like that is a very real possibility.''"

EDIT: Michael Vick signed a 10-year deal in 2005, and then was sent to prison in 2007.

It didn't guarantee anything - how I love media hyperbole. Nor does the new Mahomes contract unless it's 100% guaranteed across all 12 years. There will be loads of fine print that both parties' lawyers, capologists, and representatives can leverage.

Fantastic. Their SB runs are officially over.

400 millions, excellent! If at least 300 millions is guaranteed that would make my day.

It will be $400M.

If he signed with the Pats, this board would be like:

"well....there's no guarantee he starts".

"He's never played in this system".

"Can he beat out Hoyer and Stidum"?

"He has to earn his spot on the team".

"Is he humble"?

All that doesn’t matter if he doesn’t go to OTA even if he leads his team to 6 championships, did he go to OTA and make his undrafted WR look like Julio

This is gonna blow up in their faces. F-ing awesome. Kermit got paid lol.

it was really like 10 1 year deals

So what you are saying is that 10 year contracts don't work out.

And its not like just going to the grocery store is a risk nowadays or anything:whistle:

I mean the kid had the greatest career beginning I've ever seen. Superbowl MVP and league MVP in his first 2 years. If anyone was going to get it it would be Mahomes.

I now look forward to him having a Brady 05-14 type career where he puts up monster stats every year and never wins another ring. Kind of like Aaron Rodgets but without the attitude.

.

He'd be the highest earning player in football history I believe.

I doubt this kills them short term considering his talent. Drafting well will be key from here on out but it is what it is. Dude has been an alien so far. You make it happen for someone like that and lets not forget this is KC ... They really going to let him walk after what they've been through.

Still doesn't tell us a lot really.

Sounds like its effectively a 3 year deal on top of the 2 years of the rookie contract (which had about 25M left) which gives you about 38M guaranteed for those 3 years ? And then an option that locks in the following year shortly after the league year ends / new one starts with similar numbers.

At least a thats my basic math on that.

The interesting thing here is that not even Mahomes was able to turn his leverage into a contract that has cap percentages in its language. If he won't get it then it won't happen any time soon.

Also I'd expect them to backload the deal especially with COVID affected salary cap numbers in mind. So anyone thinking they will lack in cap space this or next year might be in for a surprise.

Someone's excited...

I just don’t get why it’s 10 years. They can’t pro-rate past 5 years... you’d think he would want to become highest-paid again in year 6 instead of being severely underpaid in the last years.

Best QB in the game deserves to be paid like it. From a pure talent standpoint he is an improved Rodgers.

Hopefully they can’t field an all-star team around him anymore. However, ring-hungry vets will take less to play with this kid like they did for BB/Brady.

The Chiefs locked up their stud QB and with proper drafting they’ll be in the mix for a decade or more with a video game offense. Let’s see if Kermit has the goods to challenge Tom for the throne.
