Sources: NFL camps likely to have fewer players

From Schefter. Agreements likely to reduce camp rosters from 90 down to 80 or possibly 75, in part because there won't be a Game 4. Also possible not all players will be on field at same time during practices, regardless of roster size.

There (very likely) isn't going to be a season.

ROTFL. 100% there will be a season.

Covid is no threat to these guys. Geez man up.

Yeah, but it is a threat to nearly every owner, a number of HC, and many other coaches. And almost everyone in the NFL has spouses, kids, and/or other relatives who might be at risk.

Meh. They all have the best health care money can buy. Just under 50% of deaths in US are to people in nursing homes.

They will play. Too much on the line.

This country has had more than 4 months to educate itself about COVID-19 but the stupidity, selfishness and the ignorance persist. The first two are innate, the third is largely intentional.

Sucks to be a UDFA this season. Our streak might finally come to an end.

Just a bit of context from here in Scotland ...new soccer season starting in August/September
Clubs will play behind closed doors in August
Possibly, from September , one of the teams working on the basis of being allowed circa 7,500 fans with 1 metre social distancing in a 20,0000 capacity stadium (very small by US standards) so approx 1 third capacity. Season ticket holders will have first choice with no mention of away supporters.....I have not seen anything yet if masks will be compulsory for the fans

The Danish league allowed 10% back in without masks.

But then again those are countries that have their infection rate under control and where many aspects of life has resumed somewhat normally by now. I am not sure anything that happens with futbol (or any sport) in Europe will be a good indicator for NFL games in the fall given the bonkers infection rates in the US.

In the end, I think they'll play in half empty stadiums. Travel can be manageable if they fly private. Hotels and player behavior in new cities is the biggest risk. How do you enforce a curfew with 1,500 - 2,000 athletes?

Biggest impact will be on the media. No more crowds of reporters all jamming microphones in athletes faces. Thank god. Do we even need a room with a podium in it? Can reporters ask their questions from home offices via Microsoft Teams or Zoom?

The reason that I think they play is to secure the TV money for 2020 and whatever fan-based revenue they can extract from luxury boxes and very limited attendance. If they don't play the season, there won't be 17 game checks during the year, everything would probably just toll. I could never imagine the players striking during the CBA negotiations because I felt too many players couldn't forego game checks. I still think that is the case.

COVID-19 is deadly serious, but football player careers average 3.3 years. When the union ratified the CBA this winter, many veterans were upset by the way younger players and minimum salary guys had voted, but the vote reflected their interests. They need to play to get paid and they aren't going to be able to play forever.

I think it is all about risk management at this point. Testing protocols will have to be run by the league, just like drug testing. If each team gets to test its players, do you think the Chiefs would be entirely forthcoming if say Patrick Mahomes tests positive before a big game. I can't imagine that they would let players who test positive continue playing. The contact tracing and definition of close contacts would be problematic. If one RB tests positive, and position groups meet together in rooms frequently, don't you have to quarantine all your running backs? I think that position group meetings need to be rethought too and done virtually. You can't be in close contact with all of your backups.

I hope they figure out a way to play and do it in as smart a way as they can.

It’s the NFL, I can’t imagine they won’t find a way to put their product on the field, even if it’s a mess.

You don't think this virus is a threat to 300+ lb. men? Really?

The issue isn't merely keeping the fans safe, but keeping the players and team employees safe.

The problem is, right now, the majority of teams play in places where the virus isn't currently under control. Unless we get this virus under better control in the next few weeks, it's going to be hard to play games at all.

If Covid has long term health effects the NFL would be at serious risk of lawsuits if they go ahead with the season which is an additional consideration to the season happening.

I would hate there not to be a season but football isn’t like soccer 9 of the 22 guys are 1 yard or less away from each other most of the game. There mostly all overweight and breathing heavily, a real risk.

I think it depends a great deal on what happens. Cases are going up but deaths are trending down. If cases peak and turn downward sometime this month, and deaths continue to go down (or, at the very least, not go up), I think we are going to see the season start.

If the so-called 2nd wave hits in autumn, we can deal with it then.

Do you have any idea how many under 40 year old professional athletes have died from this disease in the past 5 months?

and how many of those in their families that they have infected?

I strongly agree. If it takes quarantines at hotels, then they will do that. Millions are at stake. Almost every player wants to play. Those who don't should have that option, with reduced pay.

Getting rid of pre-season games should help. It remains to be seen if scrimmages between teams are prohibited.

I think that the way the players voted in the recent CBA talks shows how the majority of the league feels - they want to play. Even if some superstars opt out, the vast majority of the league is made up of players on rookie deals or near minimum salary-level contracts and have very short average careers. I would guess those players do not want to give up full year of their very short careers. Starters opting out may even give these players their chance to step up. It remains to be seen though.
