I'm not sure what the critics of the Newton move think the risk even is.

It's not money. Virtually none of it is guaranteed and like 75+% of it is incentives that won't hit the cap unless he plays like a Pro Bowler...at which point the deal is still a fantastic bargain... and they hit the 2021 cap, not 2020.

He sucks? Cut for almost no cost.
Attitude problem too big to ignore? Cut him for almost no cost.
Stidham or Hoyer beat him out for the job? Cut him for almost no cost.

You might notice there is a pattern here.

Meanwhile Newton gets arguably the best shot to rehabilitate his career (at least if the Pats can get some semblance of WR play...) so he has every reason to be motivated.

Who cares? It only matters if he's good. If he's a bildo and they still get a ring, they still got a ring. Conversely, if he sucks it doesn't matter if he's a super nice guy about it.

The only risk people have mentioned that actually exists for real is potentially stunting Stidham's development. I'd counter that by saying the bench might be better for him than being thrown into the fire with little skill position help.

I'd also counter by saying Stidham's development should not be what we base all of our decisions around considering he might not even be the long term answer.

How much cap room do the Patriots have next year? Like $100M? If Cam blows up and exceeds expectations so much that he's wanted back there is likely ability to achieve that goal. Not saying I concur that is a goal, just saying it could be worked.
Yes, I agree it certainly could be worked, but it would be contrary to how this organization has been run.

Brady’s gone man. He ain’t coming back and honestly after the dreadful season he had last year it’s for the best. No reason to go sour grapes on the rest of the team especially with Stidham where there is absolutely no evidence unless you’re Bill himself that he feels this way about the guy. There is no evidence going the other way either that Bill thinks he’s an all pro in the making. Let’s just see how things play out.
No evidence? Signing Cam Newton on June 28 is all the evidence you need man. Get out of dream land. Stidham is not the guy.

Cam is signed for 1 year at league minimum. You’re talking like he signed a long term deal.

Nobody except Bill knows what he thinks of Stidham.

He would not have been signed if he didn't come on a no-risk almost min value deal. This signing is not about Stidham but about the value of getting a veteran at absolutely bonkers cost.

You don't get a washed up, broken down player on June 28 if you have any confidence in Stidham. Let's be real. The value was good precisely because Bill was looking for a starting caliber QB. That is what Bill thinks. He is telling you that with this signing.

Not a fan of signing Cam...but I agree the QB room is much more talented now then before he signed. I like Hoyer as the backup with extensive knowledge in the system...but is it possible Cam with his Erhardt system experience could also help Stidham with mentoring at some point? Hoyer has experience in so many other systems as well...which in a way is a knock on him because he hasn't been able to stick with one team for a very long time. I hope he has a desire to coach if it appears Cam is a good fit for the next few or more years.

Again there is no such thing
Put down Mein Kampf and try something different for a change; read a NYT Best Selling thought provoking book.

Stidham just lost the QB competition, unless Cam is injured. Cam at 1/2 is better than Stidham. We haven't had a QB that forces defenses to adapt like that since I don't know .... ever? Grogan could scramble but Newton is a beast. I think Brady is better overall, but in terms of physical 13th-man running style QB (who can still throw from the pocket), Newton is great. Much better accuracy than Lamar. Not even close.

It never ceases to amaze me that people think every transaction is a message about the other players on the roster. There are 90 players on the roster competing for 53 jobs, 7 of whom don’t play on Sunday.
They had the opportunity to get a seasoned veteran for the minimum at a position where they have a young supposed starter, an aged backup and udfas. There are certainly possibilities where bb expects Stidham to win the job but wants competition, or where he just saw an underpriced player as a backup plan that would have him sign newton, as well as the chance that he feels newton might have nothing left in the tank, or is a bad fit, but signed him anyway because he would sign for peanuts.
Those things may or may not be true, and what you think may or may not be true, but signing a guy for the minimum doesn’t price any thought process is happening.

Considering your take was that this would never happen, pardon us if we just think you're FOS.

I care..don't like players on the team I root for to be d-bags

How many concussions has he had? I don't see him as a running qb

He only has to tuck it once or twice a game to keep things on tape and keep the end/spy honest. BB/McD don't care about saving mileage for years to come and Cam will be looking to prove his worth. Even if he was explicitly told to avoid hits, he'll be looking to make plays with his body to prove he still has "it." I highly doubt we see a repeat of the SB fumble shy-away, less the Pats pull a Jest impersonation and are only playing for draft position after week 10. Frankly, if thats the case, it may very well be because Cam got dinged and Stidham is struggling.

An athlete at qb changes everything for the defense. Concussed or not, Cam certainly still qualifies as "an athletic qb."
