What are the potential comp pick effects of the signing?

None, he was cut by Carolina so he doesn't come into play with the comp picks.

Plus I also think the comp pick timeframe might be over too.

FWIW-
Newton in SB 50 55.4 passer rating
Brady in AFCCG- 56 passer rating

Shows the kind of defense that they had. Hard to call either QB game a choke.

Von Miller won the day. There were a lot of dropped passes by Carolina receivers that game and a controversial play involving Olsen which was a momentum killer. Better team won but it certainly wasn’t Denvers 194 yards of offense.

very little downside to this, huge potential upside.

I am liking the chip on the shoulder angle that it sounds like he's going to have this year.

Cam Newton quite frankly is the best ATHLETE at the QB position the Patriots have had... EVER. 6'5 250 lbs and can run like a deer. The Real Question is can he stay healthy for a full season. If he does that, the Patriots just picked up a bargain off the scrap heap.

If he doesn't the Pats lost 1M dollars... no big deal. They've paid bigger fines :p Low Risk, High Reward!

i don’t .... I think newton is here cuz Stidham needs another year and he signed because he knows he will be on the field with a chance for another contract

Right but what if he's not the same and BB sees that and sees Stidham behind him getting better and better. l don't think any shot they have said..yup week 1 starter this early.

Hell you can start Stidham and if the first 2 games he looks awful..Bring in Cam if Cam is still around there

The logic is BB sees Stidham as a 4th round pick who is a back up. I mean that is abundantly clear right now.

A coach that has made abundantly clear throughout his career that competition throughout the lifecycle of each separate year's team building process is a core principle definitively sees Stidham is the back up?

Assigning an "abundantly clear" decision that has neither been uttered by said coach nor proven through his actions during the season is the OPPOSITE of logic, it is fortune telling and opinion.

Brady’s gone man. He ain’t coming back and honestly after the dreadful season he had last year it’s for the best. No reason to go sour grapes on the rest of the team especially with Stidham where there is absolutely no evidence unless you’re Bill himself that he feels this way about the guy. There is no evidence going the other way either that Bill thinks he’s an all pro in the making. Let’s just see how things play out.

a legit QB

I don't know how many draft experts with a 100% success rate as NFL GMs are on this board, but the number of self-annoited ones grows exponentially by the day.

If Newton plays, and plays well, then he's gone after a year.

How much cap room do the Patriots have next year? Like $100M? If Cam blows up and exceeds expectations so much that he's wanted back there is likely ability to achieve that goal. Not saying I concur that is a goal, just saying it could be worked.

Just hoping he comes in healthy. If he does, things are going to be fun to watch. Will be super interested how the running game reacts to his gameplay. I’m also interested to see how he works with the receivers. His scrambling ability should create a bunch of wide open looks. Something the Pats had trouble with last year. Should be interesting for sure. Anyone else getting excited for the unknown?

Look, Newton is 55th in career passing yards and has a meager post-season record at 3-4. He's not even a Hall of Fame-worthy quarterback. This is a huge opportunity to get back to the playoffs with a coach who is the GOAT. Newton has every reason to take care of his body and be the best QB he can be, which is very very good.

With this OL and backfield, I think the Patriots have already talked with him and his agent about how they see him as primarily a passer, and will rely on the running backs in the rushing game. The 17-game schedule plus all of Newton's injuries add up to taking care of his body to get through the season.

Say what you will about Newton, he can read defenses, has excellent touch at all levels, and is more of a Roethlisberger style QB at this stage of his career. Belichick has his eyes on the playoffs and will instill that in Newton.

Works for me. I have no problem if he is a Ben type of QB for us.

hopefully Cam will be less douchey here..because he was very unlikeable in Car...

I'm not sure what the critics of the Newton move think the risk even is.

It's not money. Virtually none of it is guaranteed and like 75+% of it is incentives that won't hit the cap unless he plays like a Pro Bowler...at which point the deal is still a fantastic bargain... and they hit the 2021 cap, not 2020.

He sucks? Cut for almost no cost.
Attitude problem too big to ignore? Cut him for almost no cost.
Stidham or Hoyer beat him out for the job? Cut him for almost no cost.

You might notice there is a pattern here.

Meanwhile Newton gets arguably the best shot to rehabilitate his career (at least if the Pats can get some semblance of WR play...) so he has every reason to be motivated.

Who cares? It only matters if he's good. If he's a bildo and they still get a ring, they still got a ring. Conversely, if he sucks it doesn't matter if he's a super nice guy about it.
