USENET & Patriots Mailing List, Off Season Ancient Memories

I used to post on the message board of the Pats official website during the Mr Pumped & Jacked/Booby Greer years of the late 90s...until I was kicked off it...

As to the Patriots Mailing list anyone remember the infamous Fifi & Mimi episodes? A poster, we'll name him George, accidentally posted on the Mailing List an email to a friend describing the attributes & services of "massage ladies" Fifi & Mimi. Hilarity ensued.
George was thoroughly embarrassed. Then maybe a month or 2 later he made the same mistake again posting the same topic.
Good times!

Kind of mad you aren't getting my George ref with the stuff above. I remember the Mimi and Fifi stuff.

Still sad about the one great poster who outed himself and never came back.

George got the last laugh, though. From the last time I looked at his facebook, he's living in Thailand with a separate place for some side chick. Living the _****ING_ dream while I'm here in a ****ty apartment.

Who knew? I thought I went back a good amount of time, but it was to the Rivals forum days.

Just curious: when did Mr. Newsletter (you know who I mean) find his way here?

Ah, alt.sports.football.pro.ne-patriots (hooray for data-entry vet muscle memory, got it out in one try!) I should try to track down the archived posts from the guy who called us all "Hippocrates", or the Rams fan who disagreed with me on the definition of "better team". That's all I've got :D

Steve Jaros or something like that.

Nothing of substance here, but since this thread is acting as a kind of museum, I think I'm fine stashing this in the Wax Tadpole display :)

Bernie calls us Wimps & Hippocrates 10/96

That was going to be my next story. He was terrific. I was impressed at the time that yahoos like me back then didn't seize the opportunity to poke fun at him for his accidental self outing. Memory has it that the newsgroup really wanted him back and mourned his voluntary departure.

In the Pats newsgroup one guy took SERIOUS exception to something I'd posted. No clue what it was. Admittedly I was somewhat of a wise ass on line then, but whatever. In any case, he researched me, found out who the CEO of my company was and threatened to call him up and tell my CEO what a "jackass" (polite term) I was.
I'd occasionally play hoops outside at lunch with the manufacturing jocks who loved taking their shots at the head of engineering. Anyhow it reached the point where this guy said he was going to come over at lunch with his buddies and beat the crap out of me. Gotta admit that for a few weeks playing ball I'd scan the parking lot between possessions to see if anyone unknown was headed to our hoops cage.

Just FYI: If the guy is here reading this, it's a crime against the elderly to punch me out now

Damn, Stone Age Doxxing!

As for being a wiseass - if you were like me, you were intoxicated by this magical new world where you felt free to spew **** you otherwise wouldn't. I've def grown a hell of a lot in terms of my judgement and how I interact with others online. I'll forever be grateful to my green, warty alter ego for taking the pioneer-aimed-arrows for me while I learned throughout my half-dozen Internet phases.

I think, maybe, that was "SAP Guru" ...... I remember he wanted to fight you at the YCMA. He was good at tracking, if I remember correctly.

For my own curiosity, how was one able to post in forums in the late 80's before dial up modems were widely available for consumers ?
I think most of us are referring to USENET ( Usenet - Wikipedia ). Most of us would have had access via work or university. A lot of these organizations would create their own internal "forums" for local posts, and would pull in public feeds such as the ones we mention.

College, VT100 terminal, SunOS or VAX, just command line, rn and then tin programs are the 2 ones I remember using.

I can't remember if I did listserv for pats or not. So long ago.

I can't remember the first gui one I used in Windows but you could configure to download the group and do everything offline on a program using dial up. Good stuff.
Ahh, LISTSERV - Wikipedia and BITNET - Wikipedia for the more IBM-oriented shops. USENET is older, but LISTSERV feels older!

I had LISTSERV/BITNET access in the 80s and USENET/UUCP access in the 90s, but never posted. Corporate policy wasn't clear on that stuff and I didn't want to screw up and have left proof it it for all to see, so I just lurked. In any case, the statute of limitations has been exceeded by now!

Good guess but no; we ended up OK. He was a tech genius in his own mind. I owned him over an internet bet that had nothing to do with football. It was a long con by me about who had developed patents in their name. I slowly suckered him in. On losing, he was honorable and did not post for a month as the loser of the bet.

On 2nd thought, maybe in retrospect I pissed off more guys than I thought. Damn good thing for me that I never knew Ray Lewis.
