High upside, low downside. Cam could flourish under BB if he buys in. This signing also benefits guys like James White who teams anticipate passing plays whenever he’s on the field. Can’t do that with Cam back there.

I get that Sherman wants to stick up for him but he knows better. This is just a totally situational thing. Cam has to demonstrate he got through injury issues in a year where getting physicals and workouts has been difficult due to a pandemic. Similarly, given the point of the calender and how most teams have already either a high paid QB or a recently drafted one there really was not much leverage to negotiate a much bigger deal.

Look at how Solder and Brown got paid after being put on display on the Pats. If Newton really plays up to his "transcendent talent" then he will cash in big time next year.

Richard Sherman is not factoring in the injury history of Cam Newton and the fact he is coming off a lis franc injury which is frequently a career-ender. There are a lot of reasons why Newton was not offered a contract before this incentive-laden deal. Injuries were at the top of the list.

That said, I like this a lot. I look at pre-season rosters as position groups. Adding Newton takes the least talented position group on the Patriots and turns it into a solid room with lots of options for the coaching staff. This is a great challenge for Stidham. If he can fend off the veteran free agent in camp, Stidham will have earned the job and have the confidence of his teammates from opening day.

I think this is a huge challenge for Newton. He is going to have to be on top of his game with Belichick and McDaniels . They will tolerate a transition phase while Newton gets physically ready to play, but they won't have much patience with Newton if he's not up-to-speed with his playbook and falls behind his receivers and backs who are all veterans.

This board is too funny.

First it’s “Pats won’t sign him, they’re going with Stidum”

Now it’s “If he starts or even makes the team” “Stidum has the advantage being in the system for a year” lol.

This is apparently news to a lot of people on the board, but they will have a very different look on offense next year. If you think they’re just going to run the same exact concepts as they did with Tom Brady, you’re in for a rude awakening. And the only thing that prevents Cam from starting is injury.

I think the main part to be enthusiastic about is that its a low risk 1 year deal.

If things work out it is terrific value and makes the team instantly a lot better. If not we are exactly where we were a day ago minus the opportunity cost - which granted might be huge in a year where practice /camp snaps are an even bigger premium than in most other years.
I'm ok w/ the financials and have no major issue with the deal.

Just not a big fan of him. If he makes the team, plays well and they win a bunch of games I won't say a peep.

With that said i'd rather see Stid Vicious kick ass than Cam because I bought a "Hope" t-shirt with Stid on it :p

Ideal: Newton is healthy and plays very good football. We'd be a playoff team capable of making some noise. That's worth it to me for a guy on a minimum contract.
Yeah but then what? This is not a franchise which will generate excitement among the fan base by going 10-6/11-5 and losing in the divisional round.
What is the downside? Evidently they aren't convinced Stidham is ready to go this year. There will be camp competition so he still has a chance to start but we'll see. Competition will help push Stidham and if he isn't quite ready it won't hurt to sit for another season.
It absolutely could hurt to sit Stidham for a 2nd season. It pushes his development back a year, and that's one full year of having him at cheap money lost.

QB is not a position where you just want to plug a guy in for 1 season then let him go if he plays well. I see the Patriots as having gotten better for 2020 but not Super Bowl caliber, and then we're right back in the same boat in 2021.

He had no other offer, that means no other NFL team wanted him, the guy was missing targets by a far distance last season, his shoulder better be healthy.

Assuming there’s a season & he starts..

He played two games before his team IR’d him saying he shouldn’t have been out there

Dunno why so many people hate the move. It's practically zero risk for a guy that won an MVP a couple years ago. And after being IRed for most of last season, he finally broke the streak of playing injured and making things worse. It's at least possible we'll be getting him healthy for the first time since he won MVP.

If Stidham is any good, signing Newton for peanuts won't derail him. If it does derail him, then there was probably nothing there to begin with.

I think there’s going to be offensive changes but overall I’m not sure how they plan on changing it. I don’t believe they brought Newton in to be a running QB, I just think Belichick wanted more athleticism at QB, which both Newton and Stidham bring. It’s going to be a fascinating season if they get to play it.

I also think like a full generation of having Brady and then a brief moment of Garoppolo has people way overestimating the odds of a QB who's shown nothing in the NFL becoming a great QB, let alone a good or even passable one.

Even if you like Belichick and McDaniels a lot, Stidham's more likely to be the next Ryan Mallett as Jimmy G. He probably sucks, purely by virtue of not having shown that he doesn't. If Belichick and McDaniels had seen enough in him to be willing to start him, then I'd trust and defer to their judgment of course because they've proven awfully good at evaluating and developing young QBs. But that's not the decision they made, so I'm not going to make that inference.

As far as changes to the offense, there will definitely have to be some, but I don't think it'll be a wholesale overhaul. What your receivers can do informs a ton about the passing game, and Edelman, Sanu and White are still the top options there. So I think the passing game, at least, will change less than people expect, just like I think people will be surprised to see Brady bombing it deep to Evans and Godwin.

Belichick loves those first rounder reclamation projects.

FWIW, Mike Reiss thinks Cam will start with the caveat that Stidham and Hoyer know the system more...

Ken I firmly believe that the talent on this offensive line is going to be one of the best if not the best overall squad in Patriots history,I think 2 or 3 of these starters especially Thuney and Winn could have pro bowl years if healthy and this will help Newton big time

They still need a coach though.

I don't know why anyone would assume Love is a big upgrade on Stidham.
It's simple. He wasn't drafted by BB, therefore he's a big upgrade, even though, you know, Love has never taken an NFL snap. Making a Pro Bowl before your rookie training camp is important only to BBs draft picks.

It’s different dynamics. My opinion on Stidham was he earned nothing so the best thing he could do is prove it like Brady did in 01 or fail fast so we could get part of the race for Lawrence and move on with our lives. Cam is a high reward/low risk signing that if he lives up to his hype can legitimately make us a contender because at his best he’s one of the QB’s that can play well with not much support because of how he creates on offense. But if he sucks he’s just an experiment we move on from
We can’t equate ‘01 to today. We already had a top paid QB in Bledsoe, so Brady had to wait.

An Open Letter to Cam Newton

June 29, 2020

Dear Cam,

Welcome to "Beantown". This is home to many past sports heroes like Bill Russell, Fred Lynn, Mo Vaughn, Paul Pierce, and Troy Brown.

First, let me apologize for many of the negative things that have transpired in the past with great men like Adam Jones, and Torii Hunter. I speak on behalf of white people in Patriots Nation in personally apologizing for being a part of the great problem, and we will all strive to do better at being the change we wish to see in the world.

I hope that you will find your stay with the New England Patriots to be pleasant, and most importantly, know that we root for our players through thick and thin. Whether or not you score touchdowns or win games, know that you are appreciated.

Patriots Nation is as diverse as it gets; we have fans all over the world in various countries like Africa, Nigeria, and the great People's Republic of Cuba.

For now, though, it's time to dance!!! I am greatly looking forward to doing the endzone wiggle when you score your first touchdown (if you do - if you don't, it's okay because you are always welcome in New England no matter what.)

With Great Sincerity,
Patriots Nation!!!
If you feel the need to apologize for something, do it for yourself. I don't need you to speak on my behalf. I have done nothing wrong and don't feel the need to apologize

It’s also a different offense with Cam than Hoyer and Cam is going to get the media coverage you don’t want in a back up
Backup QB's don't get the podium. Also I'm sure BB isn't that concerned, it's not like Cam is AB.
