Yeah I don’t get that take either. Cam was an MVP, at his best night be the top dual threat QB ever, and the last time he played a full season had his second best year.

Kaep hasn’t played in 4 years, was never close to Cam at his peak and sucked the last time he played.

Cam’s question is “can he stay healthy”

A year as a backup won't hurt him, a year as a backup on the best team in the NFL is beneficial for anyone. This assuming Stidham doesn't fold like a cheap suit or get injured. I don't think Stidham will lay down, but could be wrong. If Stid's is a stud, Newton could win a ring as a backup.

I think they'll have an open competition in camp, Newton and Stidham are the two best in any order assuming Jarrett can play and Cam is relatively healthy.

I feel more secure with Stidham/Newton/Hoyer/J'Mar Smith on the depth chart than I did Stidham/Hoyer/Smith.

I think this is a great signing with no downside, if he doesnt work out they cut him, upside is high.

So Cam went through a ton the last few years. Shoulder, foot & other injuries. Changed his approach to eating & health. At times his OL was trash in Carolina. And has been working on perfecting a new throwing motion.

From what I've seen, after watching him the last time around. He's trying to become a more full body passer and be more efficient in his weight transfer. I also noticed a slightly more arching throwing motion. As opposed to his see and strike-like motion before.

I see a smooth and easy transition in terms of Cam and our running game as well. His style, staples of our running game. I love it, *IF* we're healthy.

A healthy OL, Cam & RB corp with this defense is absolutely good enough to male some noise and win the division. With this coaching staff. Sure a lot hinges on health but this team could be very fun and actually win. Again health will be the word of the year if there's a season but *if* healthy, this might be Cam's best OL? Idk I'm very excited about the potential OL and what they bring. Especially if Thuney stays. Monster potential there.

He's a legit pocket passer. Can read pre-snap and adjust post-snap. Can go through reads/progressions/concepts. Arm is still more than "good enough". Still has plenty of velocity, strength & accuracy.

Cam is absolutely a "pass first" QB. I've always admired his pocket presence-feel for pressure. Maneuvering the pocket and willingness to take a beating to make plays.

Again a lot depends on health but this is a former Heisman, MVP, SB, QB who clearly has something to prove. On a one year-prove it deal. You can't pass that up.
If Cam is healthy he's our QB1, easy and that's not necessarily a bad thing for Stidham.
A)It's only a one year deal.
B)Stid has to learn and earn the spot.
C)Cam has missed games so Stid has to know he could still get his shot.

Stid wasn't going to be given anything. This could valuable experience and if he's really a winner he'll use it as motivation.

I'm very excited to see how Bill, Josh & co use a mobile QB like Cam. I've said that a few times before. I really want to see how Bill approaches it. You have keep Cam healthy but the combo of his legs & size are unmatched at the position.

Very excited to see us incorporate Cam in our running game. Particularly QB Power, QB outside zone, FB options with Vitale, Keene ...

Love to us use White & Edleman in a package out of the backfield together. Same for Rex & White. I think a healthy Rex could be very useful with Cam. Man we really need Sony or Harris to step up too in the passing game. Sony faced a loaded box like 190 times last year, top 3-5. Too predictable.

Our offense could be fun. I mentioned health a million times but that's what it'll come down too.

Also Cam isn't a bad guy at all. I really hope people give him a chance. Dude does a lot for charity, a lot you'll never hear about. Yea he's a lil different but who cares? He's not a punk or trouble maker. I've never heard of anything that would give me pause. There are NO character issues or concerns. Please don't be that guy/fan.
If his outfits are the worst thing about him than you're just looking for things to get upset about. He works very hard. Obviously loves the game and has plenty of $. Signing here tells me he's about winning. About getting better and takes his job seriously. Just like Stidham Bill isn't handing him anything. Again, give the guy a chance and support our new QB.

Cam is only 31, if he is healthy he should still have plenty left in the tank. We are talking about a former MVP who has played some very good football as recently as 2018. Stidham would have to be pretty good and Cam pretty bad to land the starting spot.

I think Cam is here with the expectation to be the starter and Stidham sits back another year.

But like any quarterback who has never started an NFL game, Stidham has a lot to prove in high-stakes situations. He’ll have a terrific opportunity to do that in a competition with Newton and Hoyer in training camp.

The Patriots’ logic here is they heightened the talent pool in the quarterback competition. If Stidham staves off his fellow Auburn alum, it’ll further the notion that he is ready for the job.

I’m very excited about this. A couple of interesting things to me:

Cam originally went to Florida to eventually replace Tebow. Of course McDaniels drafted Tebow 1st round and made the playoffs with him.

I said a few months back that he’d be amazing in a Taysom Hill role. Even if he doesn’t win QB1 he has immense value.

As of others have mentioned, both QBs are Auburn alums. Despite the giant age gap, I’d have to imagine they know each other some and if so, that familiarity will be good for the both of them. At worst there is a foundation to build upon. Need to Stidham to help Cam with the offense short term and Cam helping him long term.

Also, to my knowledge he hasn’t had as savvy of a WR like Edelman before. The way Julian reads the game and his experience with Brady is only going to help Cam. Any time Cam rolls out or even fakes to run, Julian will find the open space.

I believe he (Cam) was working out with Sanu as well this off-season.

Idk call me a homer but if health works our way it's not the worst offense in the AFCE. Which is all I'm concerned about rn.

Cam won't be afraid to target Harry. He's dealt with big targets you have to trust in the past (Benjamin, Funchess) so he'll have no problem targeting Harry.

Edleman and Sanu are pretty versatile. Inside/outside, both can pass. Both are tough, mof targets you can trust. Mix in White & Rex. Hopefully Harris & Sony in the passing game but we know White & Rex can catch. I think he'll love our TEs. No reason we can't have a unique & dynamic backfield with the weapons we have.

Yeah we're not going to be the talk of the internet but I've seen a lot worse. And Again all we should be worried about is the AFCE.

I'll gladly bet on Bill, this staff. Cam & this OL. Over the rest.

Who knows maybe Bill has another trick up his sleeve to help the offense. Trades, cuts etc ...

Cam is as athletically gifted Qb I've ever seen play. The talent is there as well let's just hope his health and his mind are in top shape. If so we can expect another SB contention season, big IF though.

It was a sarcastic reply to comments that he needed the competition provided by Cam Newton to be motivated. Everything that I have read about Stidham indicates that he is a hard worker and a competitor.

With our defense and the running game I can see us contending for another SB but that's only if Cam is healthy and his heart and mind are in it. Super big IF

I'm hoping it's a rough winter and we have deep run so we can see what Cam's winter collection looks like.

Just a few initial thoughts after just hearing about this a few minutes ago, and not having the patience to read 13+ pages.

1. For the record, I wasn't very keen on signing Newton when the idea was first brought up a few months ago. I was willing to take a possible beating for a year to see if Stidham was the guy or not, and thought ANY veteran QB would take away valuable snaps from him in TC.

2. But that was before I saw how the contract was being presented. This has ZERO downside. I guess after about 4 months of not getting much interest, Newton decided his best option was to go to the Pats on a minimum contract plus incentives and look for a "patriots bump" that a lot players have seen after coming here.

3. I know this might ****** Stidham's development, but he's STILL just a baby and Jimmy sat behind Tom for 2 full seasons before he got his 5 quarters to sell himself in his 3rd season and didn't play more than 6 games until his 6th.

4. From what I've heard, Cam has not been guaranteed a starting job, so he knows he has to come in and WIN his position.

5. It will be important to see how Stidham reacts to this new development. He has gone from presumptive starter to having to fight for a starting job against a former league MVP. He has the advantage of a year in both the system, but more importantly with the language and terminology.

6. Further, the fact that he would put himself out there on a pure prove it deal, makes me think that Cam is SUPER motivated to prove that he can still be, not just a starter, but an elite QB in the NFL.

7. The guy has taken a horrid beating over the last few years, and his stats over the last 8 games put him at the bottom of the league's QB's. He might just be 31, but he's an old 31.

8. Who know's. Maybe what he needs is a year sitting behind Stidham to get himself healthy and work out his mechanics with one of the best QB coaches in the league. We shall see.

9. All I know now is that there are a lot of pissed off fans in NJ, Buffalo, and Miami.

Honestly ? I expected it...

Take nothing away from Brady who never really had to do much at all out of the pocket since his defensive reading in the pocket was better than anyone,but the intriguing part here is,is that this team finally gets a QB in a regular season game that can consistently run away from trouble when the receivers are well covered and the defensive line pressure is coming - this is something the Patriots have not had in decades and will be interesting to see a huge change on offense schemes,a mobile likely starting quarterback in New England is going to be something to watch.

To be fair though, the last 6 games in 2018 he was dealing with a shoulder injury that required surgery and last year he had this foot issue. In the first 8 games in 2018 before that injury he played really well:

67% completion, 1893 yards, 15 TDs, 4 INTs, 100.8 rating, 12 sacks, 342 yards rushing, 4 rushing TDs

Agree with your other assessments though.

I hate this move! It makes absolutely zero sense! The guy can’t play. He was MVP the same reason than Lamar because of his running skills and now he is physically toasted and he can’t throw a football accurately. I don’t know what is the upside !

the plan was simple in my view. Play Stidham this year, if he plays well you have your QB, if not you have a high draft pick!
