They could have all the cap space in the world and it would still be a one year "show me" deal.

I don’t like his personality. He is definitely not a Patriot’s type persona. He’s always a look at me type player, where’s the camera.

A lot of player were not PTPs until they were coached by Bill. He has a 1 year prove it deal and if he plays well he can cash out next season with whatever team (including ours). He's only 31.

At the end of the day I think Newton makes us a better team and if he starts and plays like he's capable of then we can compete in the AFC.

I wanted this signing from the beginning. If Cam is healthy he is much better than people think. He misses high quite a bit but we do have taller wrs in Harry and Sanu.

The one thing about Cam that sets him up well imo is he has played with a revolving door of wrs and managed to make it work. Guys like Ted Ginn and Brandon Lafell who many thought were washed up etc have had success with Newton.

And if Cam doesn't want to run anymore, I don't think there is a team out there better than us that is used to quarterbacks not running lol.

@Ian, please awared @primetime some award for this around, are you sure he is not BB?
edit @sb1 was advocating for signing Newton, his post does not read so i think, based on taking just his post.
Hey this is just history in real time and it is only for fan. I hope no one uses this to insult anybody. Any of you want a redo? Cam has not made the team yet but just bringing him here is huge. It has surprised me as well as I did not see it at all. BB is incredible. Just when you think you know the man, he comes at you with logic.

Why was that post of mine included in that?

At worst he's Stidham's backup...no way he's losing out on a roster spot to Hoyer. In fact, I can see Hoyer getting cut.

It’s early to call for cuts. Hoyer brings leadership, & experience to assist both Stidham & Newton as the starter. Still exciting to see how this plays out.

Does this man know football or does this man know football? Rodney Harrison.

Love the move. Now it’s a competition, and it will bring the best out of them, and provide insurance at the position. I won’t be surprised to see the Patriots to now overtake the Bills as favorites to win the AFCE. Given the price and his ceiling it’s a great move for both parties.

Why was that post of mine included in that?
As one of the good ones. You were spot on with your assessment, I should have included better post but you were consistent throughout a while back when I was reading in March. I remember that thread well because I agreed with those who said it was not going to happen.

2018 was the second best season of his career.
This. People ignore this. He was playing great before injury. His issue is he’s risky and let’s people bang him up. Older Ben had the same issues. Bill keeps him protected for a year and he’s extremely dangerous to everyone.

Trust me, Bill is very aware of what Cam is capable of. I know this because I remember we never beat Cam. If I know that, Belichick knows that

I don’t like his personality. He is definitely not a Patriot’s type persona. He’s always a look at me type player, where’s the camera. Just not a fan of that kind of player. And also, since 2015, his MVP season, he’s been pretty crappy. His only 4000 yard season was his rookie season. And even during his MVP season, he pretty much choked in the SB. The following season, Carolina went from 15-1 to 6-10. Not a fan. I’ll be rooting for Stidham to beat him out.

But if healthy, if he beats out Stidham. I guess I’ll be rooting for him. I just don’t think he’s a good QB. 2015 was the last year he was good. 65 TDs and 44 INTs since then. 20 fumbles as well since 2015.

I’m not arguing with your description of his personality, up to this point I tend to agree with you. I will say that what he’s been through with the injury, losing his job and settling for this type of deal could humble the guy. As a former number 1 pick he was handed the job in Carolina from the start. Now he’s coming into a spot with no guarantees. I could be wrong and he doesn’t change but I’d imagine we’re getting a highly motivated player ready to prove everyone wrong.

Hell Gronk was never that type player his whole time here. He was tolerated for talent. This is about as humble of a Cam as you’ll get

I really like Jarrett Stidham a lot and have ever since the 2017 Iron Bowl. But, I don’t see the downside of this. Another year of development with a full off season (hopefully) in 2021 will only be a good thing for Stidham’s career. Let Newton be the sacrificial lamb to replace the GOAT, and, if Newton returns to his former level of performance, then, it’s a good problem to have.

Thanks for the answer. I was just finding out about the Newton signing, looked up, saw an alert, read that, and was confuzzled because I didn't recall posting in a Welcome to the Patriots Cam Newton thread.

Hard to understand why all the negativity here.
He will likely have to win the job fair and square in training camp...and if he beats out Stidham and Hoyer, what is the problem with giving him a shot on a 1 year deal. They were not going to win the Super Bowl this year.

If Stidham can not beat out Cam, he either is probably not that good or could use another year learning.

Also come on, he agreed to come for the veteran minimum for 1 year, its no risk with all upside.

I do assume Hoyer is pissed as hell though

Brady was not signing for the veteran minimum
Brady wasn’t signing first any less then 2 years at 25 million. Everyone needs to move on. Bill didn’t want to pay a 43 year old that for 2 years. Can gives them flexibility. Cheap contact. If he sucks you don’t have to pay the incentives and you jettison him next year. If he’s great we have first dibs at signing him. If he’s merely really good we have the cap space to sign and trade as leverage for the draft
