Reiss: Yodny Cajuste healthy

To paraphrase BB, most teams feel fortunate to have one good OT, and having two is a luxury. Not great, just good.

Pats fans insist on having three, at least one of which needs to be great, or the team is under-performing. The entitlement around here is mind boggling.

Last year they had zero good OTs. Cannon was playing hurt, Mr. IR Wynn was on IR again and Newhouse was a disaster.

.

Wynn's our LT, he def has the talent and I'm not concerned about his durability yet. If Yodne turns out to be a better LT, then Wynn could move to either RT or be Thuney's replacement. Wynn's flexibility is an asset.

What's even your point here? That nobody should see any potential to upgrade over a declining and injury prone Cannon?

I guess the health of the OL is even more important for this season to help Stidham settle in or it could be a painful season for him and us ......

Any season, for any team, with 4 significant injuries to your 5 member offense line is painful.

plus the retiring of the backup OT
plus the injury to the primary backup OG (Froholdt)
=======
Yes, health is critical. We have one healthy lineman returning from a healthy 2019, and SIX who were were expected to have considerable playing time in 2016.

Will there be improvement? One would certainly hope so. Will 1 or 2 have injuries? Perhaps. but that is a long way from 6. We should expect improvement.

I suppose Eluemunor is the retiring backup offensive lineman for this year.

Would definitely be nice if he could contribute because I have a bad Antonio Garcia feeling about him.

The only thing to consider is that Garcia injury/health was a more significant problem compared to Yodney.

Pretty safe to say the Pats didn’t have a LT all season. Wynn was inconsistent and inexperienced. I’m hoping for a big jump this year.

Tell us again, what were the "significant" injuries to Mason & Cannon?

Their lousy play was more a factor of I-Got-Paid-itis by Mason (who was Never a good pass-blocker anyway) and severely declining skills by Cannon.

If Elmanure doesn't make the 53, the reason won't be retirement, it'll be suckiness.

Still can't believe Billy traded a 4th-rounder for this guy + a 6th...

Wynn didn't perform that badly I thought after his return; he seemed to improve throughout the last half of the season, and certainly did better than Cannon ever did at RT...

Maybe a glass half empty take? I like to believe the reports of injury. We will see this Fall which it was.

It seemed to me that he was playing slow because he was still learning to be an NFL tackle. He missed a lot of blocks and was overmatched at times. It’s understandable because those were his first few games in the League and he was coming off an injury.

And how will you know that?

If the player was injured, surely he could have a good 2020 health season. Also, he could've been injured, now healthy, and not reach the performance level he might have reached without any an injury.

Alternatively, if a player was healthy in 2019 and simply performed poorly, surely he could continue too play poorly or perhaps decline a bit more or recover a bit. Also, a player might follow a poor year with a stronger 2020 season. For an example, let us presume that Mason played poorly while healthy in 2019. It does NOT follow that he will a poor performer in 2020, especially if he has a better center next to him, and perhaps better performance at RT (or even without).

Of course the variables are not completely independent. I thought that was obvious.

@captainstone insinuated that Cannon was too old and Mason was lazy following his big contract. So if Cannon is too old but recovers from an injury, he still will struggle, maybe even be replaced by Cajuste. If Mason is lazy he will not be more motivated, and if he was injured he should have recovered and improve. How will know for sure the effect if an improvement happens or not? No way to really know but we can surmise with "mostly likely" certainty.

It is not an exact science, I thought that was understood - sorry if I confused you.

I don't buy that. I think Mason was injured and it effected his play. I do not think he was taking it easy because he got paid.

I think he is a good GUARD... but he might lose out to S.Mason, J.Thuney, H.Froholdt, M.Onwenu

Cannon was an excellent RT for several years. Age and injuries are taking there toll. Newhouse even played better then him at RT last season.
