Not so OT: Chad O'Shea fired after Pats offense "too hard to learn"

This has been debated on why WR's don't do well. I expect the offense to get "dumbed down" for Stidum and the young guys.

I wish O'Shea had been re-hired as our WR coach...or maybe a former player from this Mentoring program...but Mikey Lombardi? WTF does he know about what it takes to be an NFL WR?

I'm a little torn on this one.

If you're getting paid $400k or more a year you should be able to devote the time it takes to learn an offense.

If you're getting paid millions a year to craft an offense you should be able to implement a system that your players can absorb.

Whatever, hope he comes back to NE.

MICK Lombardi is the WR coach, not MIKE Lombardi.

Dolphins put up 26ppg the last 5 games. He rubbed dumb entitled players the wrong way

Do not get this rumor at all, and OC tries to implement an Offense that no one understands or could learn?? No one noticed??

It seems odd that a team that won 5 games, but 3 out or their last 5 would fire him.. if anything they seemed to be making progress.

Yeah, and I'd take it a little farther on the coach. The system should be more than just absorbable. How easy it is to learn should be just as much a factor in the design as its effectiveness on the field. Getting rookies to a high level of performance, as well as veteran acquisitions of average intelligence, should be one of the metrics against which a system is evaluated.

Timeless classic.

In a league with a salary cap and competitive teams, anyone can pick out « the guy with unreal athleticism ». I suspect that in the nfl, the search for bigger, stronger is easier than the search for intelligent.

I would think that putting more importance on intelligence would be a way to get an edge. Because all the teams are fighting to draft Ryan, you’d be better off with Wilson. A guy like KVN becomes available for peanuts.

I’d think a rebuilding team would keep O’Shea and find a player smart enough to run the plays. They’re not being asked to solve the world’s greatest mysteries....

I can sympathize especially with inexperienced rookie players. So much to learn. Realize that "learning" a system means that you must make split second (literally) decisions, so everything has to be learned at a deep, not superficial level like taking a written or verbal test where you have time to think. I'm not stupid (this may come as a shock to Patsfans) but I do not know if I could learn to react that quickly, certainly not in one season.

I always liked that actress on the left...she was also in The Secret of My Success and The Best of Times...late-30s during those movies but still bangable...

It's not just the system, the Pat's aren't the only team that run the Ernhardt-Perkins system.

It's the complex line of scrimmage offense that the Pat's could run with Brady after 20 years that made it difficult for young Patriot receivers also.

Check out this excerpt:

"The Patriots offense is considered complex, but a player said O’Shea made the situation worse by trying to install especially complicated, advanced elements of the Patriots offense that (Tom) Brady and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels used. Those plays and terminology might be second nature to Brady in years 17, 18 and 19 of his career there but would confuse young Dolphins who were learning the Dolphins offense for the first time."

The Pat's offense will be better off with a gaggle of young receivers assuming health and Stidham is good.

I agree. In over-simplified terms, the best physical wide receivers are the easiest to find, but will cost the most (in draft position and eventually money if they stick in the NFL). The players that win their matchups through precision and knowing a complicated system in and out are harder to find before they reach the NFL, but typically will be easier to keep.

On top of that, from a gameday perspective, while an offense that's predicated on being physically better than the opponent will win it's fair share of matchups, they CAN be neutralized by scheme if the defense is good enough. What we saw from Brady and this offense is that, even when they're being controlled early, their system gives them more versatility and ability to adjust late in the game once they see what the defense is doing. 28-3 and even the 10 point comeback against the Seahawks are MUCH harder if you're basically just relying on "Hey X, go beat Y and RUN HARDER THIS TIME!"

Again, over-simplification, because obviously ALL teams have complexities built in to some degree. But in general, simpler = high floor, low ceiling. Complex = low floor, high ceiling.
