Then the league changed in the late 90s when guys started having big success as dual threats. Steve McNair is probably the biggest name. It seemed there were was a lot more college talent with this type of player.
Because the league is stupid.

Doug Flutie was astronomically better than 23 starting quarterbacks in NFL, but played north of the border instead.

Their gain.

And you have Kiam to thank for us losing before Parcells was hired.

I think the mediots were reluctant to criticize Lloyd Carr for platooning Brady with Drew Hinson/Hensun/whatever, but Kiper comes close when he mentions how well Michigan played when TB10 was allowed to start.

It's a tribute to Brady's class that he has never had a bad (public, at least) word to say about Carr.

If Brady did hold a grudge towards Carr, it wasn’t for long. They have remained friendly over the years.

Before Tom Brady had Bill Belichick with the Patriots there was Lloyd Carr at Michigan

Nope.

I carefully added "(public at least)" in my comment.

After following Tom Brady for over 20 years, there is one thing I know. Few major sports icons play their cards closer to their vest than TB12. There is no way he'd allow any hint of bad blood to surface publicly.

But, his father said it all at the time before the season opener: "How do you feel about your son starting against Notre Dame?...'Well...I spoke to Tom, and he’s really excited to play the first quarter, and then Drew will play the second quarter.'”

Tom's Dad kept his mouth shut most of the time after that. But that was one of the important times Brady let him speak on his behalf. TB12 never made his father retract those words.

Friendly? Brady has remained "friendly" with just about everyone, because he's so big he doesn't have to pick fights. He was generous to Carr's family in its time of need and sadness.

Heck. I bet Tom Brady would even say Bernard Pollard "was a really great player. I have nothing but respect for him," if asked. Despite the fact that Pollard nearly ended his career with a hit at the knee that the League made illegal after the season.

Brady knows that Lloyd Carr caved to pressure from the Michigan Alumni and nearly ended his career before it started in favor of an inferior player who wasn't getting enough playing time in the eyes of the Wolverine Alums who gave big bucks to the school and his program.

Bob Kraft and Bill Belichick saved it. There's no way around that. Carr will forever be remembered as the guy who decided that Drew Hinson was better than Tom Brady.

We pick Brady at 199 and pass up WR Sherod Gideon who was snatched up immediately at 200, what a disgrace, we needed receivers badly.....Said someone back in 2000.

I don't know where to put this but it reminded me. Ron Borges is the HOF voter for Boston. Isn't this a HUGE conflict of interest with Richard Seymour a finalist the last 2 years that he needs Ron Borges to endorse him to get in !?!? Remember Ron was the troll who blasted the Seymour draft pick and wanted David Terrell.

I really appreciate how Ron advocated outstandingly and successfully for Andre Tippett.

That said, why the hell has no one ever done the same for Houston Antwine

Context is important here.

In the 1990s, the league went to model QB of a big statue with a cannon arm. That was the Brett Favre, Drew Bledsoe prototype that became extremely popular. Troy Aikman is also a similar athleticism guy. Big dudes with strong arms, can’t scramble. Hold the ball and chuck it. Manning and Leaf.

From around the mid 90s to the Brady pick, there were very few blue chip prospects. It’s shocking to see how few first round QB picks are there. And the prototypes weren’t doing well. Manning struggled early, Leaf was a bust, Couch was a bust.

Then the league changed in the late 90s when guys started having big success as dual threats. Steve McNair is probably the biggest name. It seemed there were was a lot more college talent with this type of player.

In 1999, Donovan McNabb went 2nd overall as a dual threat QB. Akili Smith went 3rd. Culpepper went 11th.

In 2000, everyone knew Mike Vick would go first overall the next year and he was though to be the prototype at the next level.

So guys like Brady became devalued. In addition, the idea was that now that players are faster, you needed to be able to scramble away from the pass rush, rather than using traditional footwork to buy time. And frankly, how can one possibly be able to judge a QB’s pocket presence, sensing the rush, and 1/10th of a second type of instinctive skills to buy that extra smidget of time and throw an accurate pass just before getting cracked?

Not that this explains how some of these guys still went ahead of him, but this class was largely viewed as an overall bust at QB.

The football gods of the 90s were saving all the greatness for the GOAT in the 00s

Rehbein saw. He put it in his report to Belichick. Bill knows he almost missed out not drafting Brady higher.
