Don't put Parcells in the Patriots Hall of Fame.

If you think the NEP from 1990 to 1992 weren't a pathetic laughingstock you would be wrong.
Not to mention for a decade starting in the mid sixties.... when some of us starting following them. There were many years they were horrid.

My first year was 81...2-14.

Yay.

The Stupor Bowl year! Pats at Baltimore Colts for the #1 pick in the draft and the "opportunity" to select...Game Day Kenny Sims...

If you're going to make a team's HOF, you better either have a long career with the team or shine like a supernova during a short stint.

Parcells' Patriots career spanned 4 years, so the first qualifier is out. In those 4 years, he:

Had the typical rough 1st year on the heels of the Kiam era/fiasco. He did get the Bledsoe vs. Mirer pick right at least.

Had the nice playoff year with Bledsoe emerging as a gunslinger and a nice playoff push from 3-6 to 10-6, bookended by losses to Belichick's Browns. At least the future looked bright.

Had an awful stepback year at 6-10. Great draft, though.

Had a very good bounceback year, snaring the #2 seed at 11-5. Then they got one of the biggest gifts in their playoff history when Jax did their dirty work and spared the Pats another embarrassing loss at Elway's Broncos. They put up a fight in SB31 for almost 3 quarters, but they lost to a better team in predictable fashion.

And thanks to the shady exit, his tenure ended abruptly.

There's nothing there that shouts supernova. 5-11, 10-6, 6-10, 11-5? One one-and-done playoff appearance? One SB run where they got lucky they didn't need to go through their nemesis in Denver? That's Pats HOF-worthy?

Come on.

Regards,
Chris

I mean, wait until after the SB to feather the nest for the following year onward, and we're not even having this conversation. But that's not what Parcells did. For some reason, he had to get that JEST deal underway, just had to.

He was an effective mercenary, never a Patriot. Pro football is a business, but you settle into a relationship of sorts with your team. Even the most team-identified player, e.g., Brady, can become disenchanted, or the "enchantedness" can be soured by being abused. But that's a matter of dealing above board and making a choice. Other players come and go, usually with a mutual understanding that it's best for all. There are few things you can do to really make it clear that you absolutely have been fully out of F****'s to give for your fans for the entire time you have been there.

I thank him for his ability to mold that "championship" (sic) team, but he didn't give a damn about the New England Patriots. Nobody owes him a Patriots hall of fame spot, and he practically begged to be persona non grata in New England forever.

F*** that. Everybody have a Tuna sandwich that day for lunch and call that your homage to "Lesser Bill" Parcells.

Oh I also credit him for one last piece of motivation... the open-headset "that's why you'll never be a head coach" comment that might have contributed to "Gloom's" ascendency.

If you push aside his bombasity and inflated view of himself, here is my view..

Parcells was a good coach, but after the loss at NOLA in SB 31 he took a separate plane home, and is it often commented about he was separating from the Pats and making plans for his future the weeks prior..

Could never come close to choosing him for the Pats HOF.. just a journeyman mercenary who never had loyalty to much except himself..

Taking his own plane might have been a self-preservation move :D

Even Belichick was angry at Parcells for what he did in the Super Bowl. Why shouldn't we be?

Vrabel just stole the NE Patriots director of scouting.

Lets reward him with the red jacket. Smaht idea!

Fairbanks. Berry. Holovak. Saban. Meyer, for goodness' sake.

The media are morons. And most of that committee are ignorant fools.

Not Ernie. I bet he's the one who nominated Julius.

No, not because they have the same last name!

Joke of a coach who wouldn't have won **** without Belichick. Was on the phone to the Jets before our Super Bowl against Green Bay. Played Hasan Graham instead of Troy Brown.

Other than being fortunate enough to have the greatest coach of all time as his DC his only other claims to fame are being a douche to his quarterbacks and making a lot of acerbic comments in press conferences.
Patriots Head Coaches Mount Rushmore:

Mike Holovak

Chuck Fairbanks

Raymond Berry

Bill Belichick

Honorable mention: Lou Saban (although he hated us after Billy fired him, but it's normal, right?), Ron Meyer (yeah but he's not any worse than most coaches), Pete Carroll (see Meyer), Bill Parcells (yeah but he did make some important contributions, including agreeing to let Belichick come here), Clive Rush (how can you leave out a guy who electrocuted himself at his introductory press conference?)

I am not touching this one.

Swap in Parcells for Pete. I know Pete is far and away a better coach now than then but it’s still hard to see the Pats doing a lot better in the late 90s if BP stuck around than they did.
