DRAFT Dalton Keene

Check out Rambo throwing former VT teammate (transferred to Miami for senior year) and Pats UDFA signing, DE Trevon Hill out of the club at the top of the screen. Both are in the 250 lb range but its still impressive. He is going to be an instant fan favorite.

Did they have to draft him so early? Perhaps not, but if you love the player why risk losing him to another team before your next pick? Take him where you feel he deserves to be taken, not where draft "experts" have him in their mock drafts. It only takes one other team and with so many members of Belichick tree in prominent positions in the league, he may not have lasted into the 5th. I'm sure that teams get inside info from players/agents/college staff about other teams level of interest.

great post...and I am starting to see the light on him. At first I was upset they drafted so many guys above their “expected” round.
I still think the value of something is with the market dictates. We clearly overpaid. I hope it pays off.

The idea that we overpaid - for either of the TE's or for the kicker - is completely subjective. More accurate to say "I think we overpaid" or "Kiper thinks we overpaid". Bill & Nick's action tells you they don't think they overpaid. They obviously preferred Keene to Trautman or anyone else, and thought there was a risk he could go at any time. Who knows the "market" better than these guys? We should tip our hats to them for getting the guy they wanted with a bold move. I think we're gonna love both of our 3rd round TE's.

With Rohrwasser, he was the best kicker in the draft in the Patriots opinion, and I love that he's 6'3 230 and can kick it 60 yards. BB has a track record of taking kickers and punters in the 4th or 5th rounds whenever he needs one, which makes sense cause a good college kicker is gonna be good at the next level, a very high success rate in the 5th round compared with 5th rounders at other positions. Why risk losing the kicker you want for the next 10 years, vs taking some WR from East Carolina that gets cut? He's got a method and it works.

I noticed the Pats traded up to draft Asiasi at pick 91 then the Pack quickly drafted their TE, Deguara, at 94.
Then the Pats traded up to get Keene at 101 followed quickly by the Saints trading up to take Trautman at 104.
Seems like maybe the Pats know what’s going on.

The Market dictates the stock value a player has. That dictates the round or area of the draft he will get picked. "I think they overpaid" for the kicker for sure.

Massachusetts with two players drafted.

We need some per capita numbers to know which state is the true king. It's probably Texas either way.

Florida is usually at the top or close to it as well

Yeah, I believe Florida has it on simply pure talent. Texas, obviously as well.

The market is what 32 GM's determine, not what Kiper or Draft Central say. How do you know one of those GM's wouldn't have picked this guy at #100 or 110?

Why Belichick would overpay? What would be the purpose in overpaying? If he could have sat tight with confidence at #125 and picked him because the market said he'd still be there, then he probably woulda done that I would say. They made the move cause something told them this guy was going to go between the late 3rd and late 4th round.

Not true. “Market” dictating value is process of price being set by supply and demand. Player trades are market driven.
Draft slotting is totally different. All 32 teams have their own values on each player and their own needs. If 30 teams had Keene rated in the 600s but one had him at 90 and were ready to trade up to get him his “value” and “market price” to the Patriots is take him now or lose him.
Same with the K. He is the one they wanted, the had their choice of every kicker. No information is available to the patriots how the other 31 teams rate him and whether he would be the later.

Keene was my favorite TE in the draft, he reminded me of Foster Moreau who came out last year and who the Patriots should have grabbed in the 4th.

They traded back and picked Cowart later because Oakland jumped ahead of them and grabbed Moreau. They shouldn't have gotten cute and taken the player at a spot of good value instead. Suggesting they paid too much is nitpicking if the player is highly rated on their board.

The Patriots wasted a late pick last year trading for Eric Saubert who was cut out of camp, they traded for Michael Roberts who failed his physical. A bird in hand is better than another 6th round draft pick, draft picks are meant to be used.

I loved the double dip at TE in this draft and the signing of Vitale. The run game instantly improves.

Nonsense. Obviously information is available. Team must make estimates based on the information they have. If belichick guesses that another team is ready to pick a player at the same position as a player that he wants to pick, Belichick need to judge on whether he needs or wants to move up.

And yes, he can rely primarily of the media lists, or he can rely on his own team's analysis. Also, he has his own idea of how important the pick is. For example, is it worth paying a 5th to move up when the team we are afraid of has an estimated likelihood of picking our player of only 1/3
======
In any case, to say that no one has any information is sort of silly, at least IMO.

He has no information about where other teams rank players. Guessing is not information.
If he evaluates a player as the best kicker in the draft, he has absolutely no idea who the other 31 players have evaluated as the best kicker.
Relying on a media list is a horrific way of making decisions. First as you reach round 3 and later they vary widely, secondly every team had their own list so a guess by a non-team is useless and third, it takes one team to draft a player.
Every draft professional will say you stay true to your board and don’t get cute and not take the guy you want when he is value at the slot because you think you are smart enough to guess when he will be drafted.
