Does anyone really believe this, though? Belichick practically wanted to have JAG's child, for crying out loud.

it was just a ploy to get a 2nd round pick

What the hell do you care what people believe? Trying hard to be the boards elitist compass again?

I am not sure we will know what his ceiling is by then. If anything the only thing we will know for sure is that he might not the guy by then. If he doesn't disqualify himself from being the QB until Y3 or Y4 then we might actually really have a franchise guy in him.

Dunno...name me a QB in NFL history who looked terrible in one season...only to turn it around? I can't think of one right now. Look at Mahomes....you knew he was gonna be great based on one start his rookie year... same with Brady his first year as a starter even when he threw 4 interceptions in Denver...you felt like you had something there to build on. I think a player either has "it" or doesn't....it is that simple and we should know what Stidham has after this season....if he starts.

3. Which is why I assume that the official leaked Bill company line was served up by Mike Lombardi after Tod McShay crapped all over Stidham.

What did McShay say? (Edit: NVM, Sb1 linked the answer below).

I just like the part how that argument basically boils down to which reports you decide to believe. The anonymous reports that Belichick really likes JG or the anonymous reports that the team likes Studarm more than JG.

It's almost like pre-existing bias is the determining factor.

'Studarm' .... whoa, reading that gave me a twinkle in my happy zone

OK, let's list 12 and you pick the 7 that are right now NOT better than JG. i can argue for about 3, maybe 4, but then it gets tough.

Patrick Mahomes
Lamar Jackson
Russell Wilson
Drew Brees
Tom Brady
Aaron Rodgers
Matt Ryan
Dak Prescott
Deshawn Watson
Matthew Stafford
Kirk Cousins
Ryan Tannehill

Better than JG:
Patrick Mahomes
Russell Wilson
Lamar Jackson (Although as a pure Passer JG might be a better pick, and Jackson is 0-2 in the playoffs)

About the same
Matt Ryan
Aaron Rodgers
Deshawn Watson (Lets see how he looks without Hopkins)

Worse than JG:
Ryan Tannehill (Sorry but 10 good games in 7 years isn't getting a top mark)
Kirk Cousins (His #1 receiver shot his way out of town because he sucks)
Matthew Stafford
Dak Prescott(How do you have an ~#10 defense and Elite RB and go 8-8? with a top 5 QB. You don't)

Geriatrics whose arm could fall off anytime:
Drew Brees (also note Saints were 8-3 with Brees, 5-0 with Bridgewater)
Tom Brady

So honestly only 3 of 12 QBs on the list are clearly better than JG.

Now there are of course some issues with sample size when it comes to JG, but the same applies to Lamar Jackson.

So basically fairly graded JG is a top 4-8 QB. So calling JG a top 5 QB might be a bit of a stretch, but only barely.

Check out Troy Aikman's rookie numbers, or year 2 for that matter. Also: Rich Gannon, Steve Young, Warren Moon, Goff.....should I keep going?

Peyton still holds the rookie record for INTs (28) but he also threw 26 TDs, so I didn't count him.

I pulling hard for Stidham, but all this hype is not helpful. I'm growing concerned that the expectations are getting so high, he'll never be able to perform to them.

The absolute best case scenario for next year, would be that Stidham is a good game manager, with the ability to make a key play or two every game & to bounce back well from poor performances. Much like Brady was in 2001.

imagine thinking you have an opinion on if a guy is ready to start for a team when you don't step one foot into Foxboro from the time he first threw a ball in mini-camp to the last practice of the season

I mean there's absolutely no way someone could have a full pre-season and season in a team's system and be ready to play o_O

Todd McShay probably would have been one of the mediots saying this guy wasn't ready to start for the Pats

McShay needs to go back to Swampscott HS and get a clue.

Don;t count udfa Smith out of mix . Has a little better stats than Stidham better arm and great poise in pocket and under rush.Watch the video clips. Throws 50yd in air to streaking wr for td caught at goal line.
He’ll be lucky if he makes it on the roster, let alone unseats Hoyer and Stidham.

Annnnnd his opinion is ****. How would he even know? I guess if you’re gonna make a big claim, the safer bet is that he isn’t ready, but come on now. (Talking about McShay, not you Sir.)

I think it's fairly obvious they like him a lot; there was a historically good group of FA this year, Brady, Rivers, Bridgewater, Newton, Winston, Mariota, Foles. And draft options. Now Dalton. The Patriots may be wrong and Stidham may be terrible but when you look at who they passed on it's clear the Patriots like Stidham.

(and don't bring up the cap room thing, they have none but can easily get to $20M+ as soon as is needed).

I wouldn't say McShays opinion is garbage but he's a draft guy so I would say his opinion is a year old at this point with little new info for him to go on.

Most of our opinions are at least as old as last camp. Bill isn't filling us in on the new info he has which is what makes this hard to handle we just have to wait and see. I think now with the draft over every day that passes without signing someone else tells us more and more about BBs thinking but even still we won't know for sure until Camp and even well into the season.

BB and Josh will give him everything to have and honestly he could be great.
Imagine they make him a top 10 QB even we would be a threat for the super bowl every year.
I’m not betting against that pair nor Stidhams Potential.
Imagine a twilight zone where Stidham kills it and BB smiles while Tom doesn’t eclipse Winstons numbers in Tampa and is a interception machine
