As you already knew when you asked the question, Ray Lewis killed a guy, quite possibly two ....

And you draft Lawrence, which everyone knows is a no brainier

I'll play because there is nothing else to do. Tui was the favorite to be selected #1 until his injury and Joe Burrow had the greatest season of a QB in history. Thus, what happens if Lawrence gets injured or someone has a phenomenal year? It's all hypothetical, but so is the thread.

If we hypothetically had #1 which we won’t, you take Lawrence. Because that would mean Stidham absolutely blows for us to pick that high.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Belichick over thought it, traded down for a safety and OL.

I’ll play too. Stidham has a bad year giving them a reason to trade up. The Pats trade Gilmore for a first and Thuney for a second. Then use those picks plus our own first to trade up.

If Cincinnati, Miami, or LAC finish with the worst record, they would be interested in trading down.

Also, Justin Fields might be a decent consolation prize if the #1 is unavailable.

If you have the pick, you take Lawrence.

If you don't have the pick, you don't give away the farm to acquire the pick.

Every other option seems like overthinking it, IMO.

Regards,
Chris

If you have a shot at taking the #1 overall QB (which only even happens if Stidham has a Nathan Peterman-tier absolute and total meltdown) then IMO you take the elite QB prospect.

the manning boys, elway and aikman are the only top picks to win it all with the teams that drafted them (or got them on draft day)...at least as far as I care to go back

trade the pick
You forgot Bledsoe. ;)

You can look at this another way though.... If we start with Elway, 22 quarterbacks have been drafted #1 overall. That includes everyone to the present day, including Burrow. 4 of them (the 4 you mentioned) won Super Bowls with their original teams. Another 3 went to the Super Bowl with their original teams (and I am putting Bledsoe in the category of guys who went to the Super Bowl with his original team but did not win it even though technically he did).

So about 1/3rd of QB's drafted #1 overall made it to the Super Bowl. When you consider the fact that the team picking #1 overall is the worst team in the NFL the previous year* and in many cases just a general clusterf*ck of an organization, that's actually a pretty decent rate.

*of the 3 #1's who were draft day trades, 2 of those were for teams drafting no worse than #4. The Rams selecting Jared Goff are really the only example of a not-atrocious team taking a QB #1 overall

valid point though I would still move the pick......mostly because the guy running things here was very effective in building a team for a young QB that won SB's while the QB was young and developing and near zero cap hit.

It's good that there's a year to see this all unfold

Can’t say, without knowing what happens this year.

Maybe 2020 season doesn’t happen because pandemic wave 2 is worse than the first, and the Pats win the lottery for draft position next year. Apart from Goodell suspending the rules to prevent that from happening, of course.

But we don’t know the details of what happened so can’t tell what is needed. Maybe Stidham lit it up first game and first half of the second game before going down with a broken femur. Nothing that would seem to jeopardize his future, just something that wouldn’t heal in time to salvage the season.

That’s a totally different scenario from the break being another Alex Smith type injury.

So what the Pats should do will depends on things we do not know now. Thus it’s pointless to waste time getting excited about debating different hallucinations.

But one thing we do know. RLKAG.

Trade down until the 2nd round and take another DB?

Depends on their internal evaluation of Lawrence and whoever else will end up playing themselves into the conversation.

Lets be real you can set yourself up with a plethora of early and valuable draft picks over the next 2-3 years if you trade down from #1. You can pretty much built an entirely new backbone on both sides of the ball for 5-7 years by trading that pick.

Smh so what, take the best QB and move on who cares about that stat
