The After Draft Scramble

And if he doesn't agree to your offers ? Are you personally satisfied with a 3rd/4th round comp pick in 2022 while paying 14m ?

Because I can see why trading him -- even though I agree he definitely is one of the best players on the OL -- would make sense in the current situation.
I’d take another year plus the comp pick over a poor trade.

Problem with trading is that it takes two to tango. If you can’t find a trading partner to give you a good deal you have to choose between a poor deal or no deal.

I’d favor no deal unless it’s a very good deal, because I think another year of Thuney is a good thing especially with a comp pick afterward.

I am pursuing an extension first. I am managing the cap around his number. Trade is a last resort. I see no reason why a contract can not be worked out.
I agree, pursue an extension first. And if that’s not possible trade might be less desirable than losing him in FA after one last year. Depends on the trade terms. But keeping a proven guard to protect the new QB in his first year is nothing to be sneezed at.

Newhouse and ferentz stink.
Jeffery is overrated and overpriced.
None of those QBs are any good.
Thuney is one of our best players.
Unfortunately, the stinky ones are all we can afford after we trade our best offensive lineman.

? Do you mean unless we trade thuney?
We have
Wynn
Thuney
Andrews
Mason
Cannon
Cajuste
Froholdt
Eluemanor
Cunningham
and we just drafted 3 OL.

Would hope that there’d be no rational reason to have Ferentz on this team if he was currently on the roster, let alone re-sign him as a free agent. Absolutely brutal watching him get BF’d out there by any D-lineman with a pulse. If there’s one thing I’m comfortable in saying about the 2020 Pats, it’s that they can comfortably find an upgrade over James Ferentz. If there’s one player I hope to never see out there on the field it’s James Ferentz.

Anyways, sorry to sugar coat my post..

I agree that it is not a trivial situation because this is real life and not Madden.

This is also why in the past they let players leave via FA for that comp pick (or traded them a year ahead) instead of the tag + trade game.

I'm actually looking forward to seeing how the offense evolves under a more mobile quarterback (assuming Stidham). I see the choice of WRs as a reflection of what BB and JM have in mind. The best non-mobile pocket passer in NFL history just moved on. No way Stidham could ever be that effective at what Brady did, and over the final year Brady was not that effective at it either. I can see more Shanahan/49ers bootleg passing plays, moving the pocket, etc. to change angles. What type of receivers match up best with that offensive concept? Taking a big, powerful G and two TEs screams traditional Erhardt-Perkins power run football, so how do we match a passing game to that out of play action?

We need someone who is a vertical threat, like Dorsett was supposed to be. And, sure, he can be a decoy most of the time if he takes the opponent's top corner downfield with him.

That could be Byrd. Watch some Byrd video with Kyler throwing to him. He’s open a lot in short and intermediate routes because corners have to respect his speed deep.

I don think they’re trading Thuney. He either gets extended or plays out the year. He anchors a good OL and is probably the only guard who has ever made Aaron Donald look human. Freaking mauler with great hands and balance. Plus, he can play T capably in a pinch.

I have no reason to believe that a 7th rounder is ready to play in the NFL, and ready to start if needed. I would be absolutely fine if Woodard beat out Ferentz. It just isn't right to count on a 7th rounder who is not likely to make the team.

My only counterpoint here is that of the positions, the OL and DL are the easiest to transition from college to pro. That said I agree that in 98% of examples a vet is a better option than a 7th round rookie regardless of position because of the known quantity from a planning perspective (especially in a year where OTAs, mini and camp are highly likely not to even occur).

Like your diaper pu $$y

A 4yr/$50M/guarantee extension of his 1 yr $14.75M contact MIGHT do it. I would presume a $40M guarantee for the 5 year contract. Would you give him this much?

I suspect that Thuney is willing to "bet on himself". He signed the 2020 contract for $14.75. He amy be fine with being a free agent in 2021.
=============
Alternatively, if Thuney stays, we will need to do all the restructures just to get to the season and to sign even very minor players. Miguel has usually estimated $10M for the normal costs, which now includes 2 additional players on the roster.

I'd give him $40m guaranteed for 5 years. He's worth it. The only Pats player better at his position is Gilly. Thuney is better than Mankins, who signed his big deal at 29.

You can restructure a few players or you can cut High, which saves about $10m. I'd probably restructure Thuney and maybe one or two other players and see where that takes me.

We could also extend Hightower, for real, or simply with a two fake years. We would put $6M of his current salary into a bonus, and have a $10M option in 2021. This presumes that Hightower and the team aren't ready to sign a real extension.
======
We also could extend Sanu, again with a real or fake year.
$1.5M 2020 salary
$5.0M 2021 bonus
$4.0M 2020 cap (saving $2.5M of cap money)

2021 could be a $3M roster bonus, $3.5M salary plus incentives. Or the year could be made totally fake with a $10M option.

NOTE that Sanu would have the same 2020 compensation as he does now.

If we keep Thuney and work out a long term deal with him, I'd say we have a better than average offensive line, especially with Andrews now coming back.

I don’t think cutting Hightower would be a good idea. We’ve got a lot of youngsters and rookie LBs that should have the best examples possible showing and teaching them how it’s done. We need him in that role this year.
