Our passing game was only 8th in passing yards, and 7th in points. This was achieved, with no blocking and awful receivers, and no TE. What should we expect in 2020?

Our OL should be at least somewhat better. We should get some blocking help from the TE's and FB.

RECEIVERS
Are our WR's that much WORSE than in 2019 when we had an injured Edelman, an injured Sanu, an injured rookie Harry, an almost useless Dorsett, and an almost useless Myers and Gunner. Health for only some of the receivers would help a lot. Also, a year of experience should help Harry to be at least a backup. Byrd and/or Lee should help. We should have more receptions from the TE position. Finally, our passing contributions from the RB position re very good indeed.

BOTTOM LINE
I expect our running game to be better (see companion post). I expect us to better at OL, TE, FB and WR (even without the addition acquisitions that I expect).

And then we ROLL THE DICE and hope the Studham can be a better than average quarterback, and have no better backup than the clearly below average Hoyer. If you recognize this as the strategy of a Kraft/Belichick/McDaniels team, please stand up and cheer and watch and hope the dice serve you well. For me, I wait to see who belichick will acquire at QB to start or to compete with Studham, or at very least to be a better backup than Hoyer.

I think it would be instructive to view the passing game broken down by first half and second half+playoff.
Our passing game in the first half of the season was good not great. Our passing chant in the second half and the playoff game was very bad.

Agreed. We need a depth chart thread.

Myers and Harry will be have better chemistry with Stidham, because he will trust them to make plays and will go back to them even if they drop a 3rd down pass or run an imprecise route. They will play loose and confident and will be significantly more productive. Take it to the bank.

They might be better, but it will be because they are adjusting to the NFL. If they get the same separation this year as last, Stidham will be throwing a lot of ints or getting sacked a lot.

They always talk about the 'second year jump" when the game slows down for the players and they now know what they have to do to succeed. There was talk that by not drafting a QB it was a shot confidence for Stidham. Couldn't the same be said for the receiving corps. Was it BB's way of saying," I trust you guys to get healthy and step up"? My gut tells me that they will trade for a #2 or a #3 as they have the draft capital ( expect 3 compensatory picks next years, #3 for Brady (Alan Faneca rule no longer in effect with new CBA that previously limited a 10 year vet to a 5th rounder) as well as likely a pair of 4ths for Van Noy and Collins. There is some dispute among experts over whether there is a 4th pick in the 7th round... Above my pay grade..
Compensatory Draft Picks Cancellation Chart | Over the Cap
Either way, the Patriots have 11 picks #1,2,3,3,4,4,4 ( 3,4,4 are compensatory)5,6,6,7 ( the extra 6th is from either Jets or Cowboys with Bennett trade and DT)enough capital to get a WR if they so desire or wait for cutdowns but then it is a lot tougher to learn the playbook... Look at the WR who were successful elsewhere but couldn't learn ti here, Ocho Cinco, Joey Galloway...etc.. Granted they likely wont open the entire playbook for Stidham but I'd like to see it sooner rather thna later if it happens..

Tank for Trevor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pretty impressive that this passing offense ranked as high as it did with the obvious limitation that they were anchored by last season. Speaks to the brilliant minds of McDaniels and Belichick. With the additions made this past weekend, and youthful talent at QB, this should be an improved unit in 2020.

My unpopular opinion is that the offensive limitations last year were almost as much Brady than the WR corps and O-Line. He really started to look his age last year and not just in the second half. He is a 'chip on the shoulder' type of player, so there's a legit chance he'll have one last great year this year, but I don't think he had much left in the tank and BB was wise to just let him go. F

I think there is real reason to look at this coming season as a very good (though not great) one as BB was already starting the rebuild last year — if you go back to 2000-2002, and the way that team was constructed and the talent levels, I think they're fairly comparable. THOUGH, Bledsoe was certainly likely a lot better than Stidham. That said, I think even an average QB, which is what I think Brady was last year, will get you 10-11 wins and a real shot at another division and playoff berth.

I doubt our offense will be 'better' but probably more consistently slightly above average. I expect a solid C+/B- Offense and a solid B+ Defense putting us in the top 25% of the league overall.

What's this first in points BS? And did you watch the games?
Probably an honest mistake. They were 7th in points, but I'm not sure if it's counting their defensive TD's which I hopes it's not.

It’s hard to say the rebuild started last year when the teams average age last year was the oldest or close to it.

Football Outsiders had our passing game ranked 11th but 15th (0.6% below average) weighted to the later games.

It was not a good passing offense and very poor for a playoff team.

Don't forget that we lost the AFC championship game because of our D and O line play.

Obviously Henry ate our D line alive, but we also couldn't pound it in with 1st & 1 at the goal line

Pepperidge Farm remembers.

PersoNlly, I believe that we get to the playoffs with a top 5 defense, top 5 ST unit, and an average offense (14-18).

Was our offense, with all the injuries worse than 18th? I don't think so. And, as I stated, all the units are improved except QB.

Not that passer rating is perfect for for a "Passing Game" discussion, presenting the passer rating at 16th/17th would be more appropriate than yards. Our passing game was bad last year.
