DRAFT Pick 37, Patriots Select Safety Kyle Dugger (Division2)

Not open for further replies.
Weird how much heat BB takes for his secondary acquisitions as I am not sure any other team in the NFL has brought more secondary talent into the NFL in the past 6 or 7 years.

Logan Ryan
Duron Harmon
Justin Coleman
Darryl Roberts
Malcolm Butler
Jonathan Jones
JC Jackson

There is no argument that there have been numerous failed 2nd round picks but it's not as if the secondary has been some ongoing team weakness.
...and Malcolm.

Do you know literally anything about the guy? Neither do I. The people who have watched him do like him.

Against division two talent. Did I also read 6 years he played? Don’t mind the talent, but that talent would have been available at 137 or beyond, not at 37.

On CBS, USA Today, SI, and other places he was scheduled to go between 41-60...so no, he wouldn't. Not saying he gets a gold jacket but your comment is factually wrong, with all due respect

The difference between this pick and the usual head scratcher db picks is this guy is actually athletic

3 Opinion pieces ( guessing ) from a journalist doesn’t make anything factual. With all due respect.
It’s insane to believe the Patriots traded out of the first round to draft him at 37. Go ahead, defend it. There were better players on the board

He may or may not do well. But if you think he was around at 137 you are injecting bleach like Trump says. You have every right to not rate and wait around to be right, but to equate this to Richards or Wilson is daft. If Pats wanted him they had to get him now.

Uh its ridiculous that y'all haven't heard of him. He was projected to go in the 2nd round in many, many mock drafts. He's incredibly athletic and fast - main knock is D2. More explosive McKinney who could probably play LB too.

I admit my reaction was surprise too but then I did some research and the guy is highly rated by every site and scout in their predraft analysis. Absolute stud. What makes me happier is that he played in the senior bowl against FBS studs and rocked it. So clearly he would have been very good in any D1 setting.

If BB wanted him could he have waited til the third to get him? Well based on the knowledge most fans possess, he could have chosen this guy as a UDFA, because “nobody ever heard of him”. Yeah well all the scouts and NFL people sure as hell know who he is and there’s zero chance he would have lasted until much later in the draft.

Kenny Moore has also become a top 5 slot corner in Indy.

In hindsight, Dugger was an obvious pick for BB. I'd read the reports from the Senior bowl but totally forgot about him. He's not Richards or Wilson.

Jim Nagy the senior combine scout says Dugger can play will linebacker. I assume that's in 4-3. What about 3-4? Will linebacker plays inside right ??

I guess the failure of past 2nd round DBs have left people to just automatically discount any 2nd round DB picked by Belichick. Was I surprised that they picked Dugger ahead of guys who played at bigger schools like Winfield or Delpit? Sure. But Dugger was projected to go somewhere in the second round. That's no Jordan Richards or Tavon Wilson (who really carved out a nice career for himself in Detroit) type of reach.

people do miss that about Tavon Wilson, the failure wasn’t drafting him, it was how he was used here and then how he was let go. His career has been very solid for where he was drafted.

At the Senior Bowl, against very good competition, he showed up. For a small-school kid he knew exactly what they were doing. He’s just a great kid. I’d take him in the first round. He does miss tackles but it’s not because of a lack of want-to.

This.. If he walked into the Senior Bowl and did it seamlessly like the scout said then people need to pay attention to that.

As soon as I saw his measurables, what popped into my head was Rodney Harrison. Others have mentioned Eric Berry and Ronnie Lott.

That's some HUGE company to be in. It doesn't matter if he was from a DII school. Those comparables scream success. Hell, if he only ends up being a better version of Chung, then it's a success..

The promise and potential is someone who can become a leader on the defense the way that Harrison was and McCourty is..

Comment on DTP's draft Guide "could be one of the best players in this years draft class".

BB and Second Round DB's so no TE was worth the pick. We'll be picking in the Top 10 from now on. We won't win any SB's but we'll win the Draft. This guy was overdrafted.

Funny how the Draft guy of the board (@BaconGrundleCandy ) disagrees with you.. I'll take his opinion over yours.

I thought we would be planning on using Phillips this way. How does this pick impact that acquisition?

I think it doesn't affect Phillips at all. I think it all but seals Chung being released.

This kid better start from day 1 considering they have Chung or joejuan williams. I don’t get the pick but it’s not shocking with bill. His problem is that he doesn’t have brady to cover those mistakes anymore.

They just signed Adrian Phillips as well.

Dugger is a physical specimen. Unlike most of BB's DB picks he is a top athlete, flys all over the field, makes plays and tackles. I'm surpisingly not disgusted by the Dugger pick. He looks like a worthy candidate for the Patrick Chung replacement.

Kyle Dugger

Explosive burst in zone-underneath-backfield. Big time clean up hitter. Brings that tone setter attitude.

Big time burst acceleration & speed.

Reliable tackler. Loves contact but won't sell out. Secure reliable here.

Has the agility, hips & speed to keep up with TEs. Has the hips to move throughout the MOF.

Big time leader on that D. Wants to be the man by example.

Big time combo of athleticism smart versatility. You'll see him in nickel, box Defender, linebacker and he has some range to play deep at times.

Great closing speed and lateral agility in movement. You'll see him how to spy, maybe hang Defender. This is somebody that you can move all over in a pinch and really not worried about.

Small school guy the dominated when stood up at every glance. That's exactly what you want in a small school player. Very little hesitation really gets from A to B quick. Good instincts and reaction.

Again think box/hang defender. A Menace In The Box, in that shallow area. He has the athleticism, speed to cut off those quick angles you see backs trying to get to.

I wish you was a bit more decisive at times. He could be a little more decisive imo.

Has to clean up his initial footwork coming off a play, coming down hill if you. Sometimes he's a bit late, a bit slow.

Not many glaring holes. Just have to find a home clean up a few things and he should be good to go. DMC and Chung are perfect mentors.
I for one didn't want to see ANY DB picked in the first 3 rounds, simply because it wasn't an area of immediate need. But the fact remains that this kid's measurables are off the chart. He's an athlete as a pure athlete, Bill got a first round talent, and the price he paid is that he'll a guy that won't be an impact player in his rookie year. What he WILL be this year is a core special teamer, who will learn the ropes from 2 of the best mentors he could hope to find, in McCourty and Chung.

While my initial reaction was to hate the pick, like so many others. The reality is that we really needed young blood at the position. This kid SOUNDS like someone who could be a big times starter down the road. So I'm OK with the pick.

BTW- since I didn't listen to the draft, who were the picks people would have RATHER taken with this pick.

Not according to most of the things I've read. He was one of the fasted risers in the draft.
