No year is the same but I see alot of similarities between 2020 and 2001. Kind of an iffy QB situation, Stidham in 2020 and Bledsoe-Brady in 2001, veteran playmakers on defense Hightower, D.McCourty in 2020 and Bruschi, Mcghinist in 2001 and a solid O line. I don't expect us to be an offensive powerhouse next year, BB seemed to focus this draft on defensive players, getting the size and physicality they need to compete with KC. Younger fans don't remember the beginning of the Brady era, he was a game manager who made the plays when he needed to in the clutch but didnt become the QB who lit it up until around 2006ish. I think they're trying to follow a similar model here. As long as BB is the coach, we should not be tanking, at least that is what I am seeing at this point. Even in 2008 without Brady we went 11-5 with Cassel as the starter and won a couple of games in 2016 when Brady was suspended.

I'm not expecting anything. Except alot more losses.

A LOT of Brady before Brady became “Brady.”

Funny I just did a post in another thread about 2020 offense vs 2001 offense and every position group outside of QB is definitely better now.

Yup. This would help their young QB like it helped Brady.

It’s kind of exciting to see the reset actually. Pressure is off and we don’t have to live and die with each game now. Should be fun to see this new team begin to take shape.

I may be totally wrong and we do tank but I don't feel like that is what is happening here. Its not like Freddie Kitchens is the coach, BB demands excellence.

Untalented offense, unproven mediocre QB. Poor drafting. Get ready for non playoff years folks

As someone put it, 2006 Brady took whatever the defense gave him.

2007 Brady took pretty much whatever he wanted.
Stidham was drafted higher than Brady, Something they have in common is that they had some bright moments but were not dynamic in college, both absolutely lit it up in their last college game. Go look at Auburn vs Purdue in 2018 and Michigan vs Alabama in 2000. coincidence maybe but still interesting.

Sounds like the 2001 Pats. How long you been a fan?

Since 93.

2001 patriots? The NFL was a lot different 19 years ago. And Stidham will never ever be Tom Brady. I don’t consider him a good NFL starter at all.

2020: Ceiling 8-8, floor 5-11
2021: Hopefully we'll have our QB of the future in hand, a good defense and begin loading up on offense.

This season will be ugly though.

transition years. Hope you nailed these draft picks and the Patriots get their QB of the future in 2021, so they can challenge again from 2022 on.

But you are likely looking at 2 very mediocre years in 2020 in 2021.

Tom Brady wasn't Tom Brady in 2001. Brady was once in a lifetime. Stidham could be Brady circa 201-2005. That would be good enough to put a competitive tram on the field. Since I have been a fan since 1962 that would be more than enough.

I would hate to be 5-11 or 6-10 and miss out on a chance to get the kid from clemson or OSU. That means belichick is committed to stidham. Stidham has the tools but these other guys are very talented.

We were a .500 team the second half of last year with a schedule with 4 playoff teams on it with a passing game that completed 55% of passes for less than 6 ypa a <80 qb rating and scoring less than 20 ppg (17 vs the playoff teams). Surely we won’t be that bad all year no matter who the qb is. I’d call 8-8 the floor.

Yes but what does that get you? Stidham needs to show you some quality franchise QB play otherwise it will feel like wasted season.
