We hear this about everyone though, so color me skeptical. Remember when people on this board seriously thought we could trade Ryan Mallett to Cleveland for the #6 overall based on reports on how the Pats really like him?

The proof is on the field in the games. We won’t really know what we have until Halloween (assuming the games start on time).

It’s just smart business to bring in someone else besides Hoyer to hedge their bets and push Stidham. Preferably not today, but sometime tomorrow. It’s too important of a position.

Fromm's arm is stronger than Hurts'. Alabama and Oklahoma's burners frequently had to slow down at the top of their route on deep balls. Fromm has the stronger arm but he's cheeks as a QB in general (unless he's playing the Gators).

Are you sure that might not be a timing thing though on the deepballs?. I have not rewatched anything on either of them. I always thought Jalen had a pretty good arm with good velocity on his throws. with from generally being more accurate/having better timing than hurts

Mallet was terrible in preseason play. Stidham was great.

I wouldn’t say great, but I agree he was a hell of a lot better than Mallett. I thought Jimmy G looked better though, and that Stidham was bailed out of a few bad decisions by bad plays by the defense.

Take best valuable available. If there’s a QB at 37 you think has a chance of being your QB for the next decade, then you take him regardless of other needs.

My view is that we’re not winning a SB this year, so I’m not interested in checking off needs. Get the best players to take us through the next 4-5 years, and if it happens to be a QB then great.

Gotta be right one of these years...

The problem I see with all this is that you assume that there is some characteristic that you think automatically makes a QB a "cant miss" prospect when in reality the amount of projected development and unknowns play a big role in where he ends up on the draft board.

A lot of players that are taken early just earn that premium simply because they need less development than those 3rd and 4th round talents. Often a lot of this goes out of the window once you hit year 2+ (e.g. Trey Flowers).

I think Stid being picked in the fourth round is only indicative of what he was at that point based on College data. But that is not necessarily true a year later. Players develop and improve each at their own pace and the gap between players doesn't remain the same.

With Hurts? Maybe. His wind-up on deep balls is a bit elongated. Don’t think that’s the case with Fromm.

It's not just the team around him. The game has just never slowed down for him. He looks totally lost in the NFL. I loved him coming out but I just don't think he has it.

Hurts has a good enough arm to get it downfield but his placement on deep balls is pretty bad. I think he might turn out to be a pretty good quarterback but you have to design the offense around him. The good news is, at worst, he's exactly the kind of backup QB every team should want - a guy who can actually play a role instead of just holding a clipboard.
