Problem with this draft strategy is we get the leftovers. And the flaw is assuming the last guy left is as good as the first guys taken in the same value group. The times we trade up a couple spots for guys like Chandler Jones, Hightower, Jamie Collins, Gronk are WAY more valuable than trading back and taking some overvalued leftover scrub guy (too many second round examples to list)

What i hope for in 2020 is for the QB to show glimpses that he could be a franchise QB. If not i rather be picking in the top 2 in next year’s draft.

The same talent at 23 is there at 33-50

They now have the picks to grab two to potentially 3 of those players.

They can also unload Tunney for a high 2nd rounder too...

Primetime I see your point. If there was a recent track record of hitting on second rounders, I'd be more enthusiastic. This draft needs to be a home run. Unfortunately I have zero confidence in the guy making the picks.
That depends on what your expectations are. After reading this thread I think a lot of people's expectations are too high.

Next season is a write off, IMO. We've done a bunch of salary dumping and are burning through cap hits this year. We're coming off a streak of two SB wins, a SB appearance and a playoff appearance as well. We actually did go for it last year. We used high draft picks on WR and RB in recent years, we kept a bunch of aging higher priced vets, we tried to add one in Sanu, and it didn't work.

Now we've let vets walk and moved down in the draft to try to get core players. There's no way it gets turned around in one season. Next year will be about plugging in young players to see what they got, and the following one will almost certainly be more of the same. Stidham will get a year to show what he has. If he's good we can move forward with him. If he sucks, we'll have $100M in cap room and Aaron Rodgers will be available :D.

I think the rebuild will be two seasons, and that assumes (a) Stidham's development trend line is that of a franchise QB and (b) this year and next year's drafts are good. If Stidham isn't good enough, then it's more than two seasons.

Common mistaken beliefs about the draft that create a good deal of misery and disappointment:
1. The purpose is to provide high impact players to fill immediate needs for the upcoming season. This rarely happens outside of the top 10-15 players taken.
2. The players rated the highest at a given position are going to be stars in the NFL. For example, this year's TE crop may not provide a single starter.
3. Players taken in the 2nd and 3rd rounds should always become good players in the NFL. The odds are less than 50%.
4. Picking at the end of each round due to two decades of success is has no impact on success in the draft

I don't get it. Even after sleeping it off. You had Queens sitting there. Other great prospects. How can you be sure the guy you want will be there in the second? What if he isn't?
The Pats do not fall in love with one guy! They have a points system that tells them how well each player will fit their system. They obviously see lots of guys who have high scores in the later rounds so it makes sense to trade down. They don't really care at this point in time if the players with high scores are WR, RB, OL, CB, etc. All they care is that they see more value in trading down than not trading down.

a study of the ‘great players’ we’ve missed out on by trading out would be an interesting project. That’s not sarcasm but genuine.
Every team has its list of 'great players' they have missed. Everyone had 198 chances to pick Brady, we did at 199. Feel free to make lists for all 32 teams going back to the beginning of the BB/Brady era. Then feel free to compare based on record of success. I'm sure we'll look great. That’s not sarcasm but genuine.

Unbelievably disappointing that we did not take a player at 23. With 12 picks we really did not need to trade back. I am not sure how many times we skip out on the top talent in the draft anymore and get away with it. Very discouraging but I am still hopeful we try to make the most of today's picks.
The draft isn't a spectator sport for 1 thing. It's not to entertain us. I can't even count how many times over the years I've waited around or stayed up to see who they're going to pick at a certain spot, only to see it traded. Dozens.

Always picking in the low 20's or 30's, we're used to having nobody on the board with a 1st round grade in their opinion, so they often trade out or attempt to. We're fortunate there was a trading partner if they felt this way; look at Atlanta last night who wanted to trade down from 16 but couldn't find a suitor.

In this case we just manufactured a high 3rd rounder out of thin air, and all it cost us is that the guy we get at 37 is only say 95% of the guy we could have gotten at 23.

It's obvious from this that the Vikings taking Jefferson had no bearing it all on the trade back. The deal was already worked out before the Vikings made their pick.

With all the ****ing holes weve got, Bill is going with the bucket of roofing sealant approach vs tube of super glue. Now we need to pray some of them stick. If we have another supremely dud draft w/o #12, it could be a loooooong year.

Yep. I said that in another thread I think. DET is 35 and Giants are 36.

This would not surprise me at all. Outside of Wilson, who I would have loved to grab and let compete for the RT position right away, there wasn't much drafted at or after 23 that I'm upset about missing out on.

This is exactly what I thought when reading that post. Rutgers has produced some nice DB's for us.
Under Greg Schiano, who left Rutgers for quite a while, but just now came back as their new head coach. So in a few more years, maybe the RU-NEP pipeline re-emerges.

1. I think that is sarcasm
2. You are clearly missing the point.
3. You have ignored subsequent posts in which I conclude we couldn’t have done any better
4. You clearly don’t know my posting on here and where I stand on the whole BB the GM thing.

I understand the strategy perfectly. But there is also the benefit of getting a first round talent. I realize we don't have any money to pay anymore so perhaps that is another reason we got out of round 1 but man it would have been nice to get a starter at that spot. It also does not help that the second round is Bills worst round of drafting historically. Like the other poster said, I am tired of the leftovers. When we have traded up in the past, the players we have gotten have been difference makers.

Normally I'd agree but in April of 2020 as far as sports goes it's pretty much all we've got.

I didn't bother doing anything other than looking at a tracker from time to time last night. With the Pats having no 2nd rounder going in like a lot of other people I expected them to trade their 1st.

Had only one wish for day 1 - trade out. Glad they got the opportunity. Felt sure they'd take it.
Hope for at least one trade out to 2021 for Day 2.
These are simply the most economic moves in Draft.

Then again, this draft class should be bigger to complement weaker FA.
Next FA will be big with $100M+ in cap space so 2021 might be a trade up Draft for a change ;)

Great (collegiate) player, but whoa, slow down there bruh..

The same talent IS NOT there at 33-50, There is no can't-miss sure-stud ILB like Kenneth Murray in the 2nd round .
