Harbaugh lapped Bill years ago r.e. draft day

I always thought that Ozzie Newsome was the Ravens' drafter, but he's gone now. Who was drafting for them last night? I started watching but got sick of Goodell's phony bs in 10 minutes. I tuned in to the radio coverage instead.

Someone else already posted that the Pats trade down was a +60 (in the Pats favor) on the draft value chart. That doesn't seem like much, until you consider that 60 points is the value of the 117th pick in the fourth round.

How about the other two trade downs in the late 1st round:

Miami traded 26 (700 pts) for

30 (620 pts) + 136 (38 pts) = 658 pts

Dolphins lost the trade, according to the draft value chart.

Minny traded 25 (720 pts) for

31 (600 pts) + 117 (60 pts) + 176 (21 pts) = 681 pts

Vikings lost the trade, according to the draft value chart.

Hey Captain, tell me how Bill's ass tastes. ;)

EDIT: I should've waited to post until after I had my first cup of coffee of the day. The patriots "won" the trade only by FIVE points on the draft chart. Duh. Still a win, though. :)

Reserving judgement until I see how the Pats use those picks but looking at who SF and Baltimore got it's tough not to feel a pang of regret.

Got a feeling that BB might take Swift if he is there. Two headed monster of Michel and Swift while the receivers and Stidham get more acclimated. Keep it simple until Stidham is ready to dig deeper.. After that tight end. There will be plenty of players in the mid rounds at all need positions.

Eric DeCosta. He's from MA.

What time did this trade happen 11:00 PM??.. it always seemed somewhat absurd from a marketing standpoint to drag the draft on the way it does..

OTOH expected the Pats to trade out of the first round.. a good thing is the teams have 7 minutes to pick in the 2nd and 5 minutes in the 3rd... so this may move on from the realm of "watching grass grow" to something more reasonable.

Earlier for most of the rest of the country. It started at 5:00 PM for some.

Sitting with my adult bevvy and *****ing that i stayed up to watch Bill trade out of 23 to get 2 2nds or some crap like that.

Exactly what happened. Need that bill drinking juice pic.

New uniforms.

Same old draft.

The thing about the draft value charts are that they are for the average draft, which never exists. To be accurate in any given draft, a value chart needs to be adjusted based on where the talent is focused.

Apparently, in this draft, the picks in the second and third round are more equal to each other than is the norm, because of the high number of players grouped there based on evals. So the gap in value between, say # 40 and #60 isn't as high this year as it is in the "average" chart.

Love these kind of posts. You can fill all your needs in the 5th round, the 2nd round is time to make a luxury pick at a low-value position! (Also the tight end position is horrible in this draft and they may not even draft a single one.)

Seven Trades Patriots Could Make To Help Land Tight End In NFL Draft

"Patriots send pick Nos. 23 and 213 (765 points) to the Los Angeles Chargers for pick Nos. 37 and 71 (765 points) This is a nearly identical trade to the one above. They’d just be receiving an earlier second-round pick and a later third-rounder. The Patriots and Chargers are not regular trade partners."

Almost nailed it.

I hope the Pats fans they show are all guys in their mid 40s/early 50s w goatees and Bruschi and Ted Johnson jerseys
S
So a bunch of Scott Zolak looking dudes?

Actually, that's how we keep getting to Super Bowls. The teams that watch Super Bowls from the couch do what you're suggesting.

Well except for the fact that Bill had Tom...

Common mistaken beliefs about the draft that create a good deal of misery and disappointment:
1. The purpose is to provide high impact players to fill immediate needs for the upcoming season. This rarely happens outside of the top 10-15 players taken.
2. The players rated the highest at a given position are going to be stars in the NFL. For example, this year's TE crop may not provide a single starter.
3. Players taken in the 2nd and 3rd rounds should always become good players in the NFL. The odds are less than 50%.

Today is arguably the most important draft day in BB’s tenure. The first trade was ideal in this draft that is deep on day two. The team now has the draft capital IMO:

  • 3-4 impact players
  • trade for a veteran TE (Howard, Brate, Engram, Everett)
The homer angle is the pats are set up beautifully to come away with a strong draft. The pessimist angle is BB has to end his cold streak. It’s about making good picks & not reaching when there is an abundant of top 50 talent left.

Potential additions:

  • Harmon replacement/upgrade - draft is deep at FS with McKinney, Winfield Jr, Chinn, Davis, Dugger
  • speed at WR - Hamler has some Deion Branch to his game. Shenault when healthy is electric
  • OL depth - Jones, Cleveland, Hennessey
  • EDGE - Gross-Matos, Baun, Lewis, Taylor & Greenard project as starting caliber 3-4 OLBs across Winovich. Epenesa is a steal in the Flowers role
  • LB - Wilson, Gay Jr, Bailey
  • TE - As referenced above, the pats have the capital to acquire a TE on a rookie deal. It makes more sense than reaching. Trautman & H Bryant are intriguing

a study of the ‘great players’ we’ve missed out on by trading out would be an interesting project. That’s not sarcasm but genuine.

As long as you also list the terrible players who some thought would be good that BB "misses out on" by trading down for context. No-one knows ahead of time who's going to work in our situation and who isn't. Singling out the good ones after you know who they are reeks of exclusion bias and hindsight bias.

Let's face it, the real reason the Pats traded out of the first round is that they couldn't find any fans to put on the screen behind Roger Goodell who wouldn't be giving him the finger when he turned around to announce the pick.

Seriously, is there anyone more cringe-worthy awkward than that guy?

I understand the trade. Patriots have a lot of needs and have improved their chances of drafting multiple starters and if lucky an impact player.

That said. They could have drafted an impact LB in an area of need. I can't help but wonder how this guy will perform and whether the patriots made a terrible mistake.

The fun of the draft

I like Trautman and Albert O
If we aren't drafting one then we better be trading for Howard and or Goedart.
