The Worst Patriot Draft Picks EVAH

Duke Dawson. Awful pick at the time. Traded UP to get him. Traded him a year later for pennies on the dollar

The trade was made because the Pats were so deep and so good in the secondary. If they weren't that deep and that good, Dawson would have been kept and would have been a contributor. I don't think they realized when they drafted him just how good the secondary would become.

You cant be picked with the 56 pick of the draft, make the team, and still be in the league and be considered for the worst pick ever.

To be even considered they have to be a first round pick, and really should be a top 20 pick. Second and third rounders may suck but they can't possibly be on this list.

We drafted him to become what Jonathan Jones has.

He certainly wasn’t the worst pick ever, but the Domenic Easley pick in the 2014 1st round really gets me upset. And I’m usually a defender of Belichick’s drafts.

I really liked Easley and wanted the Pats to take him - with their 2nd round pick. Patriots Reign illustrated how the Pats try to get clean prospects in the 1st round and take their “first round talent but....” prospects in the 2nd. In Easley’s case, you had 1) two torn ACLs including one that ended his last year, and 2) questions about his attitude towards football. These were both known in advance — our draft forum here mentioned both things during the draftnik season.

On top of that, Tedy Bruschi mentioned the one thing that really irks Belichick the most is a player being an error-repeater (this came up in the context of Tavon Wilson’s play at free safety). But Belichick made the same mistake previously — he ignored the character red flags and drafted Brandon Meriweather in the 1st round in 2007. He turned out better than Easley but was ultimately considered a major disappointment at the time of his release in 2011. Belichick didn’t learn his lesson and he himself was an error repeater.

I understand that the Seahawks were lined up to select Easley at pick 32, so he wouldn’t have lasted to 60. Let the Seahawks make that mistake - don’t draft a 2nd rounder in the 1st round if you’re afraid he won’t be there later. Basic risk management.

Pretty much any Gator.

Huh? Draft bust because he almost died on the field? Don't you remember the hit he took? I thought he broke his neck. Can't we at least keep the word "bust" for players who sucked when they played and not for ones who just happened to get injured?

BTW, I thought Katsenmoyer was a great pick and I was bummed out that his career was cut short due to injury. In 1997, the guy was recognized as a consensus first-team All-American, won the **** Butkus Award and the Jack Lambert Trophy. He was a great college player and most thought he was going to be a great player in the NFL. Injuries suck, but I think we never got to see what he could do because of that nasty neck injury.

all that and you cant spell his name right?

Katz was ok... worst ever? nah ... but lets not pretend he was the second coming...

Biggest draft bust for the Pats? has to be Kenny Sims, followed closely by Eugene Chung

Karl Singer 1966
John Charles 1967
Dennis Byrd 1968
Ron Sellers 1969
All high first round picks all amazingly bad.
Everyone is forgetting about Chris Canty and Tony Simmons.

"Worst Patriot Draft Picks EVAH" Evah???

Ken Sims - FIRST OVERALL PICK, aka #1 pick in 1982. Played like a later round pick. (Could've taken Mike Munchak or Marcus Allen).
Tony Eason...
1990, we had picks 8 and 10, turned those into pedestrian players with DT Ray Agnew and LB Chris Singleton, team went 1-15.
1997 draft...the whole thing might be worst overall evah.
Chris Canty...

2nd round pick fails don't rate when you have so many 1st round fails.

What defines a "Bust"? Richards stunk in college. What expectations were there of him?

I see Maroney mentioned here. And how the Pats would've won a SB in 06 & 07 with a different RB. I re-watched SB 42. RB was not the issue that day. In fact, not feeding said RB the ball more was the issue. That Giants defense was ferocious up front. Having Brady drop back all day long was a recipe for disaster. As was the bizarre decision to go for it on 4th and 13th.

Jack Concannon. The Patriots traded up to get the first pick in the 1964 AFL draft.Jack signed with the Eagles as a 16th round pick in the NFL draft.

Easley and Sims, probably

Minus Katzenmoyer that's a hard list to argue with.

My biggest disagreement with this list is Kenneth Sims.

Sims was a destroyer in college, on par with Reggie White. You absolutely had to take him #1. It would have been foolish not to.

He broke his leg clean in half his rookie year, and he really never came back from it. He did have one really good year but he was a shell of himself otherwise.

Jordan Richards
Derek rivers
Ras I Dowling
Jake bequette
Duke Dawson
Dominique Easley

Could we be adding more names to the list tonight?

I know I haven't been following the Pats as long as some of you, but for me, the names are :

Duke Dawson
Tavon Wilson
Jordan Richards
