The Worst Patriot Draft Picks EVAH

Terrence Wheatley and Ron Brace.

Dishonorable mention to the Belichick WR wasteland.

Yeah, the rumors during that year was that he was extremely immature. But I'm not sure when the rumor came out that Brady was visibly pissed at him during training camp.

Not rumors. I was between jobs and attended lots of training camp sessions both years. Brady was disgusted with the clown, waving him to the right lineup and even waving him off the field. Chad would hang out yukking it up with other players.
Posted a whole thread about it here.

For some reason, i seem to remember Eugene Chung being a decent guard and a sucky tackle, which is where they shifted him over his first year.

Hands Down: Ken Sims

2nd round pick.

My bad. Average longevity of an NFL 2nd round pick who makes the initial squad is 4 years. He's still around for his sixth. I agree it was an unfortunate pick, but hardly top ten worst worthy.

Is this sarcasm? Because you're camp BB over camp Brady.

You've convinced me:
  1. Brady is the GOAT and always has been the GOAT
  2. QB is the most important position in team sports
  3. So the Pats should have won all 20 superbowls
  4. Winning only 6 means Belichick is the WOAT
Belichick's superbowl record with the GOAT is only 6-14! That's even worse than 5-11! WOAT!

Good. I'm glad we got that cleared up.

Ras-I Dowling, Ron Brace, Chad Jackson, Jermaine Cunningham.

Some of those were in years where that extra player being a hit rather than a miss could have been the thing that put us over the top, Chad Jackson especially.

While many players can be argued there are separate categories. You have players with obvious talent (Easley, Ras-I-Dowling) & reaches (Jermaine Cunningham, Jordan Richards).

Easley had arguably the fastest get off for a IDL in the last decade. If he got past his college injuries he could've been one of the most disruptive players in the league. He's a draft bust but I don't fault the team as much for those type of gambles (that's how they landed the goat TE).

A pick that I found aggravating was Cyrus Jones. He was an average CB talent that was over drafted due to special teams. James Bradberry went two picks after him & had more upside at the time.

Using the first two round picks on low ceiling players like Jones, Richards & Dawson isn't a good use of draft capital.

McDaniels' kid brother coaches Maroney in college so we waste a first round pick on him. Follow that up with McDaniels personally working out Chad Jackson at WR and we waste another high pick. Deja vu with SonyMichel and NKeal Harry.

.

Eugene Chung. Complete bust.

The disastrous 1990 first round...Pats had the #3 pick. Could have picked Cortez Kennedy or Junior Seau with that pick. Instead, they traded down to pick Chris Singleton and Ray Agnew. Jesus, I'm getting mad at Victor Kiam just thinking about it.

Trevor Matich. Pete Brock got old so the Pats thought they drafted his successor. So soft. I think this also was the draft the Pats traded back, giving the 49ers the chance to draft Jerry Rice in their original spot.

Regards,
Chris

Jordan Richards made Michael Jordan want to change his last name...but do you think that guy is worse than Terrence Wheatley, Tavon Wilson, or Glass-I Dowling?

HELL YES...........Hella Bad

Ron Brace for me

so you’re saying this McDaniels guy is a problem?! ;)

Ken Sims and I don't think it's even close.

We all admit that the draft is a crap shoot. So the only logical choice for the worst draft pick evah (from BB) has to be Jermaine Cunningham, not only was he a complete bust, but his teamate, who played the same position, and was picked one pick after him, was Carlos Dunlap.

BB could have had a monster draft as he has already landed McCourty and Gronkowski, imagine of instead of Cunningham, he took his college teamate Carlos Dunlap at pick #53?

If you really want to get sick to your stomach compare thier stats:

Jermaine Cunningham Stats | Pro-Football-Reference.com

Carlos Dunlap Stats | Pro-Football-Reference.com

Cunningham was out of the league after three years, Dunlap is still a Pro Bowl player. There is simply no excuse for this miss. Nobody thought that Cunningham was better than Dunlap! They were both DE, playing for Florida, so whoever looked at that tape and made the decision that Cunningham was a better choice than Dunlap should have been fed to dire wolves!

This is definitely one of mine as well more because of how we missed, not who we missed on. We’ve picked worse players than Cunningham.

Gotta be Jordan Richards. He was the last of the trifecta of BB safety reaches over a few year stretch.

Tavon Wilson was a reach but at least he made something out of himself in the league and is still around. Harmon was actually considered a terrible reach at the time as well, but that was one where BB was actually right about. Them Rutgers.

Derek Rivers
Cyrus Jones
Dom Easily
Tbucky Jones

Ken Sims is seared in my memory because that was the draft after the season I became a Pats fan.

It was a terrible season, but, wait, the Patriots get to choose whomever they want from College! And there's this guy from USC who has won the Heisman trophy and looked amazing to me. We could get him! People explained to me, no, it's not that simple. The Heisman winner isn't necessarily the best player, you shouldn't just look at running backs but at the players around them, and so on. So I was thrilled with the Sims pick. Marcus Allen, meanwhile, is in the Hall of Fame.

In the BB era, it's close between Jermaine Cunningham and Ron Brace. They annoy me because they're both examples of BB getting too cute. Both played alongside players who were getting more attention (Dunlap, Raji) and so, clearly, his theory was, they were going under the radar. But the truth is that neither were that good. Raji was long gone when the Pats picked but Dunlap was still there, which really hurts. So Cunningham.

You mean BJ Raji, but your point stands.

He was actually pretty good when he played. 101 tackles, 3.5 sacks and an INT that he took to the house in his first season. He had a career ending neck injury that forced him to retire. He was an athletic freak.

If you want to unfairly put him in that category, than Robert Edwards belongs there too.

Dowling is in that category as well. Despite his injuries, he went on the have an average career for a second round pick, given that over half of DB's in that round don't become starters and a portion of the rest aren't on any roster a year later. He was starting as a rookie CB for Belichick before the two injuries. He kept fighting back, making an NFL roster each of his first six years before finally facing reality and becoming a coach.
