***DISCLAIMER*** THIS IS NOT WHAT I PREDICT THE PATRIOTS WILL DO, THIS IS WHAT I WOULD PERSONALLY DO.

Its a sad time for the Patriots and the end of an era with Tom Brady gone. We all knew it was coming eventually but it still hurts. I was fully prepared to go all in with Brady for 2 more years to try and win another Lombardi trophy. Now we have to move forward and its important to be honest with where we currently sit. I think this team can be competitive in 2020 but I don't think we can compete for a Super Bowl. It's not just losing Brady, its our LB core being decimated, we still haven't found any answers to our offensive weaponry issues and we have very limited cap space. I don't think we should tank and I can't see BB ever doing it, but I think its important to look to the future and make some tough decisions.

We will never be able to replace Brady because he was the offensive system. He is undoubtedly the GOAT but he also had his limitations. What this does is gives us the opportunity to evolve and potentially revolutionize the way the Pats play offense in the NFL. I think this could look very different moving forward, not just from a personnel perspective but from a scheme perspective. I think the heavy reliance on option routes, short passing and methodically moving down the field isn't very sustainable without Brady under center. I would love to see us move forward by borrowing different aspects from other successful teams, in particular KC, Baltimore and New Orleans offenses.

I love the way KC spreads out it weapons to create mismatches in different formations to attack vertically. While it certainly helps to have a generational talent at QB I think Andy Reid needs a lot of credit for his creative play designs to take big shots down the field. Guys like Kelce and Tyreke Hill may not be the most well rounded players but they have elite traits that make them so difficult to match up against and the Chiefs use them very well. I really like the way they use simple passing concepts out of complex formations and would love to see McDaniels get creative. We don't have that kind of talent on offense right now so that would be my focus of this offseason. I really like Stidham's arm and I think he could excel throwing down the field.

I love Baltimore's run game with a dual threat QB, pistol formation, RPO's and zone read. This is something we could never do with Brady's athletic limitations but now everything is on the table. We have two very athletic OG's and an athletic LT that are already well suited to this pull heavy zone running game. I think Rex Burkhead and Damien Harris would also excel in this kind of scheme but I have my reservations if Sony Michel is a fit. While Stidham is no Lamar Jackson he is definitely more athletic than Brady and I think this could be a good way to use his legs.

So how do you combine an offense built around spreading out its weapons and throwing deep down the field with RPO's, zone read and heavy run offense? By taking a page out of the Saints playbook and taking it even further. The Saints have had great success using Taysom Hill as a compliment to Drew Brees at QB in certain situations. I would like to see an even more balanced duo if we can compliment Stidham with a dual threat QB. I'm not talking about a 50-50 split, but two QB's with complimentary skill sets that can be adaptable to any situation. Think Taysom Hill with a better arm playing maybe 15-25% of the snaps depending on the opponent or situation.

This could completely open up the playbook and let McDaniels imagination run wild. We could adapt week to week based on the strengths and weaknesses of our opponents and greatly increase our options for different game situations. In the end the only way this kind of system can work is if you have the right players and that is what makes this draft so important.

Trades

Patriots trade CB Stephon Gilmore + RB Sony Michel + 2021 3rd to Det for 2(35) + 2021 1st + swap 2020 3rds (98 for 67)
This is a pretty complicated trade but one I think works for both teams. Its very difficult moving Gilmore because he has been so good for the Pats and if Brady remained I would have looked to lock him up long term. But if we're not going to be serious Super Bowl contenders in 2020 I think its smart to get maximum value for him now. With Gilmore we have the best secondary in the league, without him I think we still have a top 10 unit. While I think this is selling low on Sony I just don't see him as a great fit for the offense I envisage. He's not a threat in the passing game or as agile or explosive as I would like for this kind of offense.

Why would Detroit do this? Matty P and Bob Quinn are on the hot seat and they probably need a good season in 2020 to keep their jobs. They have still have a huge hole at CB after trading Darius Slay and everyone expects them to draft Jeffrey Okudah from Ohio State. This trade would give them the reigning DPOY at their biggest need who is a perfect fit in their system and is already very familiar with Matty P. This also allows them to draft DT Derrick Brown or LB Isiah Simmons who fill other major needs and are seen by most as the superior players. I expect them to trade down from #3 to either 5 or 6, still be able to get arguably the 3rd or 4th best player in the draft in Brown or Simmons and obtain a nice haul to offset some of the picks they are giving up in this trade. Detroit also desperately needs a RB to pair with Kerryon Johnson and Sony would be a nice fit.

If Detroit thinks they are on the way up and the Pats are on the way down this is a good deal for them. If Stafford gets hurt again and the Lions have another poor season it could be a great trade for the Pats and would help accelerate the rebuild. While the 2020 draft is very talented, the 2021 draft is shaping up to be special, having an extra 1st round pick could be huge for the future of the franchise.

Patriots trade TE Rob Gronkowski + WR Julian Edelman + 3rd (87) to TB for 1(14) + TE OJ Howard
Another tough one to swallow but in the end we might be better off long term moving on from these two. With rumors that Gronk might be willing to come out of retirement to play with Brady in TB and Edelman coming towards to end of his career, neither guy figures in the Pats plans long term. To me this feels like the the Pierce/KG trade to the Nets. While it hurts to see two legends of the franchise depart (especially after losing Brady), it might be in our best interests to maximise their value. Gronk will never play for the Pats again and I don't think Edelman will be part of the Pats next Super Bowl run

From a pure value standpoint these two might not be worth a mid 1st round pick at this point in their careers but Tampa is in a unique situation. They are all in on Brady for the next 2 years and it's Super Bowl or bust for them. I think they would be crazy to turn this deal down because adding Gronk and Edelman to Brady, Godwin, Evans and Brate would make them instant NFC favorites. OJ Howard is entering the last year of his contract (I don't see them picking up his 5th year option) so he is expendable. I don't think there are any players they could get at 14 that would make them better than adding Gronk and Jules and they still have the ammo to move up and get an OT to protect Brady. Another factor that TB might consider is with such a disrupted off-season due to COVID-19, adding two players Brady already has chemistry with could be especially valuable due to limited preparation. You could argue Gronk and Edelman have more value to Tampa Bay than any other team in the NFL including the Patriots, so we should be able to squeeze a nice return out of them.

Patriots trade 2(35) + 6(195) to Baltimore for 2(55) + 3(92) + 3(106)
The Pats suddenly have a lot of holes and not a lot of cap space. Moving down and accumulating picks in the middle rounds is always a decent option. Baltimore was aggressive in free agency which allows them to be aggressive in the draft too.

Patriots Picks

1(23). LB- Kenneth Murray- Oklahoma

1(14). WR- Henry Ruggs III- Alabama

If you want to talk about guys with elite traits that can create mismatches there is nobody in the draft more dangerous than Ruggs. He's not someone I would have considered a fit with Brady running the offense but now I think he is ideal for NFL offenses moving forward. I think he can have a Tyreke Hill type impact if he's put in the right situations. If you want to see what kind of an big play threat Ruggs is, he scored a touchdown on around 25% of his receptions.

His best attribute is obviously his world class speed but he is much more than that. Don't be fooled, Ruggs is a talented and well rounded WR that has a much better overall skill set than Tyreke Hill did when he entered the draft. That doesn't mean he will end up as good as Hill but I think the only thing that will hold him back would be an offensive coordinator that lacks creativity. The biggest difference between Ruggs and Hill is off the field. Ruggs is a completely clean prospect and excellent team mate. He is an ideal fit for what I envisage going forward.

Backup options: I think at 14 we have a very good shot at 1 of the top 3 WR's in this class. I love the Ruggs fit but I would also be ecstatic with Jerry Jeudy or CeeDee Lamb. Otherwise its a good spot to grab someone falling or trade down for more picks.

1(23). LB- Kenneth Murray- Oklahoma

kenneth-murray.jpg

Linebacker is a huge need after the losses of KVN, Collins and Roberts and Murray is an absolute stud. He is explosive, athletic and seems a perfect fit for for the modern NFL. Isiah Simmons gets the most hype (and rightfully so) for his freak athleticism and versatility but as a pure linebacker Murray is the best in the class. I've seen him compared to Patrick Willis and from a size and athletic perspective it seems like a pretty good comparison. If he can be anywhere near the level of player that Willis was he is going to be a steal. With so many teams having mobile QB's, Murray is exactly the kind of guy you want to combat them. He has great instincts, great intelligence and plays all over the field.

Backup options: If Murray is gone at this point I would look to trade back and look to target S Jeremy Chinn and ILB Logan Wilson

2(55). QB- Jalen Hurts- Oklahoma

20190901_Houston_Hurts_TR_036_WEB.jpg

This is the guy that brings the whole plan together. Like Ruggs I never considered Hurts when I thought Brady would return but now I think he is the perfect compliment to Stidham. Don't get me wrong, Stidham is the starting QB and would play the bulk of the snaps but we can create packages around Hurts to help open up the offense. The options this would give us would make it so hard to match up against because unlike Taysom Hill, Hurts can legitimately throw the ball. He has experience executing a lot of the concepts I would look to implement for the Pats offense and has shown to be very versatile. He's even displayed some pretty good hands on some of Oklahoma’s trick plays so we could utilise him in a variety of ways. Whether is running, passing or catching I think Hurts can be a valuable weapon. One of our big weaknesses last season was red zone and short yardage, that is where Hurts would excel. He has also proven to be a good leader and great team-mate that would fit perectly.

Backup options: if Hurts is gone at this point I would look at one of the top TE's in the draft (Cole Kmet or Adam Trautman) or look at a LB like Terrel Lewis from Alabama. I would also look to grab QB/HB/TE Jared Gerbino from Dartmouth in the 7th round. He is a Taysom Hill clone.

3(67). WR- Bryan Edwards- South Carolina

b650481c-5719-45d9-a37b-c679c3eeed0e_750x422.jpg

I think Edwards would be a fringe 1st round prospect if it wasn't for a late season injury and this whole COVID-19 situation disrupting the draft process. He has the size, speed, hands and toughness that translate very well to the NFL. He is an excellent route runner very good at defeating press coverage with both quickness and physicality. Uses his hands very well and is a very nuanced in his routes to set up CB's. Has fantastic hands and can make highlight reel catches. When I watch him I can't help but see Michael Thomas. He might not be a burner and isn't elite after the catch but the guy just gets open and catches the ball. I think he is a star in the making and his poor QB play at South Carolina is going to make him a steal.

Backup options: This draft is loaded at WR. If Edwards is gone here I would probably target one of the other WR's that should still be on the board. The guys I really like are Michael Pittman from USC, Donovan Peoples-Jones from Michigan, Van Jefferson from Florida and Tyler Johnson from Minnesota (love this guy).

3(92). DE- Darrell Taylor- Tennessee

1137221622.jpg.0.jpg

Taylor has as much upside as any pass rusher in this draft not named Chase Young and I can't understand why he isn't rated higher. He has elite speed, explosion and bend off the edge and can flat out get after the QB. He still needs to be more consistent but he could be a special pass rusher in the NFL. He has also flashed some ability to play the run and set a good edge. With his athleticism I think he could also play more as a stand up linebacker and offer some good versatility. The sky is the limit for this guy with NFL coaching.

3(100). TE/WR- Chase Claypool- ND

usatsi_13300797.jpg

WR? TE? It doesn't matter, Claypool is an offensive weapon. I probably see him as a move TE that can line up all over the place and dominate the middle of the field against linebackers and safeties. He has already added a little bit of bulk so if we can just get a little bit of blocking out of him he could be so valuable. Regardless of where he lines up he is going to create match-up nightmares for opposing defenses. This is the big target down the seam we missed last season without Gronk. After trading for OJ Howard as the inline blocker, that would free up Claypool to move all over the formation. He is also an elite special teams player that should contribute right away even if it take time for him to develop as a TE

3(106). RB- Antonio Gibson- Memphis

BBZk8oA.img

I absolutely love Gibson as a fit here. He is an explosive runner with great power, quick feet and excellent agility. The things I'm concerned with about with Sony Michel are the things I love about Gibson. Explosiveness, decisiveness and ability to set up blockers in front of him thanks to his experience as a kick returner. He won't go super high because he doesn't have a lot of experience at RB having spent most of his time at Memphis as a WR, but in 2 years time I think he could be the best RB in the draft. Having so much experience at WR also makes him a weapon in the passing game. I see him as a Kareem Hunt type player who runs hard between the tackles and can be spread all over the formation.

4(125). IOL- Tyler Biadasz- Wisconsin

Tyler-Biadasz.jpg

Seen as a 1st round pick last season, injury has really hurt Biadasz draft stock and the COVID-19 situation is going to make it much more difficult for teams to get proper medical information on players. If he can return close to his 2018 form he is going to be a steal and would be a high level starting C in the NFL. Even if he doesn't quite get back to that level he should be a very good backup interior offensive lineman, He is intelligent, tough and athletic which makes him a perfect fit for the Pats zone blocking scheme. A great insurance policy for David Andrews.

5(172). K- Tyler Bass- Georgia Southern

5c3cc2cdb5ee9.image.jpg

I would be shocked if we don't come out of this draft with one of the top Kickers. To me Bass is the best in the draft. He might not be the biggest guy but he has the biggest leg. The ball just explodes off his foot and regularly hits from 60+ in practices. More importantly he has shown that he thrives under pressure and has made some huge kicks, including a 40 yard game winner for Georgia Southern in the Camellia Bowl (after hitting a 50 yarder to end the first half). Belichick traditionally takes special teamers in the 5th but I wouldn't be shocked or upset if we took him in the 4th

6(204). OG- Kevin Dotson- Louisiana Lafayette

kevin-dotson.jpg

Dotson is one of my favorite players in the draft. He might not be an ideal fit for a zone blocking scheme but you just don't find many human beings that can move defenders like Dotson can. In the 6th round I think he is just too good to pass up. He would be a great backup OG that we can use in short yardage situations when we just want to blow people off the ball. Another guy to keep an eye on at this spot is Saahdiq Charles from LSU. He is a fringe 2nd round talent base on his athletic ability but has major off the field concerns. If he were to drop this would be a great spot to grab him.

6(212). LB- Markus Bailey- Purdue

Purdue-Boilermakers-Markus-Bailey.jpg

Another very talented player I expect to drop due to a medical concern after two major knee surgeries. If Bailey didn't get hurt last season I think he could have been a 2nd round pick. When healthy he is an excellent athlete, fantastic tackler, great in coverage. He is smart, instinctive and versatile, having played every LB position in every front for Purdue. He is just a pure football player. If the medicals check out he is going to be a steal and I wouldn't be shocked if 5 years from now he is the one of best LB from this draft.

6(213). WR Jauan Jennings- Tennessee

263338_20190907_FB_BYU_CJ_057_1_.jpg

I wrote a little about my love for Jennings in the WR thread. He is the most physical WR I have seen in years and he reminds me of Anquan Boldin. He works the middle of the field really well and is excellent after the catch. To put his physicality into perspective, in 2019 he broke 29 tackles on only 57 catches, the most in the country. He was the heart and soul of the Vols, having a cult like following. He is a former QB so he has a good understanding of the game and is also a very good special teams contributor. Just a pure football player, there is nobody that plays the game harder, especially at the WR position. In the 6th round you don't expect too many guys to make the roster but I think Jennings would be a very tough cut. Ideally we could stash him on the practice squad for a year and then have a ready made replacement for Sanu in 2021.

7(230). TE- Stephen Sullivan- LSU

image.php

This is a pure lottery ticket. Sullivan didn't produce much with the depth at TE at LSU but he really flashed at the senior bowl. He has good size for the position, great athleticism and a huge catch radius thanks to his 7-foot-1 wingspan. There just aren't a ton of human beings on the planet with his size and length that can move the way he does. He has showed some effort as a blocker but where he is going to make his money in the NFL is as a mismatch weapon. He could develop into a Darren Waller type player

7(241). TE- Matthew Wilkerson- Edward Waters

69541678_10156803608204811_7032676984882724864_o_1.jpg

A pretty much unknown prospect from a very small school. Wilkerson played both TE and DE in college but his home in the NFL will be at TE. He doesn't have much production or experience against high level competition but he may have the best combination of size and athleticism in the draft. He was fairly well regarded out of high school being recruited by Florida State, South Florida and NC State. He was going to commit to NC State but didn't qualify and went the JUCO route. Of course he is a long shot in the 7th round but he could develop into an Antonio Gates type steal. There just aren't many human beings on the planet with that blend of size, speed, strength and agility to why not take a chance on him.

Some of his JUCO DE tape to highlight his strength and athleticism

Was going to give your post a rating much higher than the one I left because I really like your trade ideas & your first two picks...then Jalen Hurts happened...but then I loved the Claypool, Gibson & Biadasz picks where they were taken...but sadly the next pick happened and I stopped reading...a feckin kicker in the fifth feckin round...

Admire the effort on here, holy Hell

I can't say I agree with all your points but nonetheless, well done. This is excellent.

my thoughts exactly. not ready to follow the Lamar Jackson trend with Jalen Hurts. Although I don't mind the kicker. BB knows kickers.
