I did start. It's hard to get used to.

That's right , just a minefield of viewpoints and facts......I guess just do what you feel is correct for yourself unless it is a direct order/rule

I red-Xd you but I need to go back and change that. It's not your fault, w/the confusing guidance being put out.

Looks like they advised against to preserve the supply for the front line. Understood. But it takes a toll to get advised "Oh it doesn't do any good" then "Yeah it does actually, we just need them on the front lines a million times more."

My understanding is that you're still not stopping a lot of droplets getting in, but you're saving people from YOUR droplets. And if everybody does that, then YOU get the benefit.

Anyhoo... Scotty, I'd say yes, we all have to do what we think is right, but I'd lean heavily on the side of doing the right thing & not giving ourselves a break w/this one. As in, we still might have to go beyond "direct orders" to really get the best public health (& personal health) results.

There's just a lot riding on it

I also think it depends on where you live as in most cases the high figures for catching the virus and sadly the number of deaths are in densely populated areas. My only exposure at the moment is going to the supermarket (or keeping my 22 year old daughter away from her boyfriend....lol) and even then numbers are restricted and a one way system is in place. Anyway regardless of this.......

Everyone please think and stay safe and hopefully some treatment(s) will break through and help us get over this

We just received our order of two gallons of hand sanitizer. We also have a spray bottle of isopropanol that we use to sanitize anything coming into the house. We've become germaphobes.
You pretty much have to be a germaphobe at this point. There’s really no other choice. Sad but true.

This sounds terrible but in a twisted way, I want to get infected just to develop immunity so when Stay Home orders are lifted, I can go back to work without fear of getting sick and THEN not being able to work (opportunity cost).
...or to just stay healthy until a vaccine is available.

There is a theory out there that many of us may have gotten it with minimal symptoms I and developed immunity to it.
If we could mass test society and anyone with immunity gets a “wrist band” which grants access to return to work, etc. and the the ones who do not can continue to socially isolate until a vax is available.
That’ll keep the economy running and still keep people safe.

There isn't anything to argue about anymore, and there really shouldn't have been in the beginning. OF COURSE we should all be covering with a mask of some kind when we go out, even if it will lower the infection rate by .01%. That's hundreds of lives saved. And it has become clear that it is much higher than that.

There's no cost to it. You don't need an N95/99/100. It's just about catching the liquid that we all naturally project when breathing/talking.

Homemade, cloth masks are easy; there are literally dozens of "how to's" available online now. With all this spare time, people are making them in almost every community and giving them away for free. The staff at my wife's workplace just created dozens of them for the staff and volunteers who show up every day.

And please, don't start with the "personal liberties" nonsense, as if asking you to wear a mask is a threat to something bigger. Those liberties are the privilege we create by having a handful of social obligations we all live up to. Sometimes I think the most common medical problem in this country is Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

Unless, of course, you happen to die from the illness. That’s the scary part of wanting to get it over with. Hopefully, they’ll make some ground on that antibodies blood test and that can tell us if there was previous infection.

I lived in Asia about twenty years ago and wearing a mask was understood even then. Nobody there criticized anyone for wearing a mask. It was already socially acceptable for them.

Eventually we'll reach the same level of social acceptance. Today we went shopping with our masks on and I'd guess that thirty percent had their masks on. It's definitely no longer a taboo to wear a mask.

I had to check again to see when you posted this. It sounded like what I saw weeks ago.
That 30% is much lower than it should be. I think if I went into a busy store now for groceries and 2/3 of the people had no masks, I'd find another store.

Right now my problem is that I need blood work and don't want to go near the hospital that I've been using for many years. They're offering up gowns and masks for us but I'd rather find a less busy lab.

Yes, that seems like the rational path forward at this point. It will be a big test for us as a society, when the first large supply of the antibody tests become available. Will people who have the antibodies be willing to wear something visible that allows them to be the corps that reboots society? Or will there be enough push back for that, because it feels too communitarian or authoritarian?

We tend to motivate our society through images of individual greatness, so we'll probably need to make those people into hero's of some kind.

Very thought provoking post.
I think the immunized people who are willing to donate their serum for developing a vaccine should be looked at like Bone Marrow donors...and be celebrated as such.

In terms of authoritarian policies...we are more than half way there with the shelter in place and stay at home orders.
In the words of Captain Ramsey, “We are here to preserve democracy, not practice it.”

What makes me think, Silence of the Lambs?

That happens to me whenever I read a post from Fnord.

Now that I think about it, Movies That Remind Me of Fnord would make a decent thread in The Pub forum.

Anyway, back to the masks. I'm going homemade the next time I go outside. Either a simple bandanna or one of those masks I saw here that was made from ladies' sanitary napkins.

I think one of the key distinctions that often gets lost is this:

In a democracy, we elect people and give them the power to limit freedom in times of crisis. We can then evaluate how they did when wielding that power, and take action in response. Edit: and the role of leadership in that case is to protect that feedback loop as a higher priority than their own reelection. That's core to the job description.

In a truly authoritarian government, leaders aren't elected and the feedback loops that allow for correction are much more limited.

Where/how did you get an order of hand sanitizer??

Also if you get to Walmart early in the morning during a weekday you can get isopropanol which is the main ingredient and make some spray bottles.

I picked up 2 of these before the hording and gouging started. I've joked with my friends and co-workers that I should start charging $25 a pump, and its now my retirement sanitizer.

This is what Bill Gates is proposing with digital vaccinations...ergo, human chipping. Which was just a "conspiracy theory"...until now.

Any sort of marking that you are proposing is a direct violation of the constitution and basic human rights. It should and will be met with heavy resistance.

I have "Veteran" on my driver's license. How is that any different?

That mark doesn't give authorities the license to detain you, restrict your travel, or arrest you without cause.

The mark does indicate that you voluntarily decided to serve in the armed forces to fight for the very freedoms that what I posted would be eroded, making your service pointless.

Also, thanks for doing that. :)

Unscented Hand Sanitizer Gel and Spray

Edit:. It took about three weeks to get it.
