I've changed my position from whatever I posted on the first page or 2 of this thread. My mom, who is a very high ranking nurse at a hospital serving a community of 150k+, is now telling me I should be wearing a mask in any sort of confined or crowded public space. Not saying her opinion is the be all end all of public health policy, but I trust her.

Don't need one if you're just walking around a suburban neighborhood, and I don't plan on going out at all, but if I do need to pop over to the grocery store or gas station I'll definitely be sporting a mask.

And, BTW, I think that we would like you to continue to give us you mom's opinion. I'm being serious. We need to hear from those who are on the ground in this crisis.

If you read what the World Health Organization has published, this is why they don't recommend wearing them currently. They say they don't work and people who are using them are much more likely to ignore the social distancing etc. I am simply quoting what they say for you people who don't read or believe them, once again going back to all of your vast knowledge on pandemics.
Or you could argue that the asians all wear them so it must be good. Of course this disease came from asians eating bats and dogs, so I am not sure I would recommend them as experts.
I am not sure what they mean that "they don't work". Does a non-P95 mask block the virus? No. Will it cut down on the amount of material you are spewing into the air around you? Yup.

Expert in UK government briefing said.....he had discussed this with a colleague in Hong Kong earlier today and said it was not UK government policy to wear a mask if you are healthy. The key part is "if healthy" , I think it is different if you have the virus then you should wear a mask so not to contaminate others

And you can only tell that you are healthy if you are tested every week. Obviously, someone is not "healthy" merely because he doesn't show symptoms.

That's right , just a minefield of viewpoints and facts......I guess just do what you feel is correct for yourself unless it is a direct order/rule

yeah...I think Fnord should cover his face...even alone in his home...nice wig though...

As soon as they started the social distancing, I said it was airborne. So I began to wear a mask in all stores. I only go to the grocery store, haven't been in over two weeks. I buy food online.

I wear a mask and gloves, and notice the application of such varies from store to store. In RI I usually go to Dave's early and there are about 30% of the shoppers with masks/gloves.. Then I run into Stop and Shop and have yet to see anyone doing this.

Of course this is anecdotal, but have to wonder why??

mask / gloves all the time, every place i have to go.

running out of hand sanitizer though... might have to whip up some homebrew, or just start carrying jugs of hot water and a bar of soap with me

Found a good renewable source for gloves. It's free if you are willing to put a little work in. DM me if interested.

Is that human skin?

While that's true, the thing about that is that it's not the healthy people you have to worry about and that's why it really does make sense for everyone to wear one.

Let's be honest, most people who are really laying low and only going to the supermarket and being careful already don't think they're going to get it. They're worried, but no one really thinks they will. But at the same time, if everyone wore one, the people who didn't know they were sick before symptoms showed up wouldn't give it to someone else. Because obviously by the time people know they're sick and they start wearing one, it's essentially too late.

It's more or less a numbers thing from that standpoint and if everyone wears one, the likelihood of a sick person passing it to a non-sick person greatly reduces. That's obviously why everyone in China probably wears one during these pandemics and has been wearing one. That way, if they do happen to get it and don't know it, at least they're not passing it on to a healthy person.

I lived in Asia about twenty years ago and wearing a mask was understood even then. Nobody there criticized anyone for wearing a mask. It was already socially acceptable for them.

Eventually we'll reach the same level of social acceptance. Today we went shopping with our masks on and I'd guess that thirty percent had their masks on. It's definitely no longer a taboo to wear a mask.

Now in Lombardia mask or mouth and noise protection is a must

I use mask since approx more then 3 weeks when out

I have 1 p3 mask and some normal ones...

We just received our order of two gallons of hand sanitizer. We also have a spray bottle of isopropanol that we use to sanitize anything coming into the house. We've become germaphobes.

The workers at the Dunkin’ Donuts I go to for my mobile orders finally are wearing masks and gloves. I told the night manager a couple of weeks ago that he needed to say something. Sometimes the people right in front of you are the ones that need the most protecting.
