Just because this virus is longer lasting and very contagious doesn't mean it was created in a lab. A research lab in Wuhan enhances a conspiracy theory but it is much more than likely a coincidence.

Other viruses of the sort originated from an animal carrier. It makes plenty of sense that the same is the case here. That is the most likely explanation, and the scientists would agree on it. The virus being a bio-weapon is a far more attractive and interesting story but I'll take the word of scientists over pointing out there is a research lab and proceeding to connect the dot with no other evidence.

Beyond that I'm just thinking about it from the perspective of the Chinese government. Why would they be creating a kind of super flu? Using or thinking about using a biological weapon is not only inviting the rest of the world to begin developing and using biological weapons but also risking their own country given how contagious the disease is and how quickly it spreads across the entire world, not just a few enemy countries. There is also the question of how on Earth would such a virus accidentally escape from the lab? That's why I conclude it is extremely unlikely.
Yes, I was among those who originally thought that the presence of the biolab in Wuhan was too significant to be a coincidence, but, in addition to the medical arguments you make, the fact that Xi focused on his economic model as he consolidated his control over the Chinese Communist Party over the last two years pretty much puts that theory to rest.

China has not only put its own economy into deep recession as a result of the virus, but the longer term impact will be to alter global trade patterns that have been evolving since the fall of the Soviet Union and lead to the "re-domestication" by the west of much of the supply chain that had migrated to China, India and elsewhere in Asia and the Subcontinent.

Nothing is impossible, but creating a virus this devastating without bulletproof safeguards to prevent its unintended release is just short of unfathomable.

Lindsey Graham has a point here. Am I hurting the guy who works as my personal assistant by keeping him employed? He's safe, working at home, by the way.

If I lay him off, he'll make more than if I keep him employed? My situation is different - one person currently employed (and contractors), but what about the FedEx drivers, the supermarket employees?

It's a flaw n the otherwise, pretty good bill that can and should be easily fixed.
Overall yes because at some point unemployment and these benefits run out and you are losing money without a job.

The bill is crap, but it needs to be passed for confidence building. Almost any decent economist could construct a better bill. I've talked with people on the total opposite side of the political spectrum as myself, and we came to a quick agreement of what can and should be done. But we're not politicians who represent the rich and powerful, so... the bill is cruddy. No one likes it.

Now pass it and stop complaining that someone will end up with $50 more a week than they deserve (whatever that means).

That being said, a lot of Senators are going to have to bite the bullet because this thing is getting no more than 60 votes, and plenty of others are going to act self-righteous at the expense of colleagues.

The best one I've seen so far was the first one that came out of the House, but that went nowhere.

Totally, why not let the government pay him more than you're paying him and save the payroll. Not good for the country, but every self-interested person who has been raped by taxes would/should do it.

Well, you totally missed my point. As a self-employed, fairly successful guy, I'm in the highest tax bracket in the country, but that's not the point I'm making here at all. This isn't about ME at all.

It's about workers and the resentment that will be caused if those laid off make more by being laid off than the workers make while being on the front lines of the fight.

The UI is being considered as a furlough, with guarantees that workers can return to their previous positions, and without interruption in their employer health care, if they have it.

UI should be 100% of pay, not 109% - unless those still working get a 9% bump as well.

Why not just lay-off who you can to save the payroll and increase the ones who stay as some sort of crisis bonus. In the end the amount you save cutting one person is still not going to be wiped out by a marginal increase to others

Too late. Way too late.

We are in for a very rough two months, and looking at years to recover.
Will the Doomsday machine go off Strange?

Hey ESPN I know the virus has screwed up your programing schedule but do you really have to hour long OJ Simpson specials 2 days in a row?

Gotta say, the addition of the phrase “respectful discussions only” is the funniest thing I’ve read all day. Literally laughed out loud. Good luck with that.

People need to be able to pay their bills while staying home from work due to kids or their work is closed. This is a must have.

MA schools are closed until may 7, that is a really long time. I'm lucky enough to work from home and my wife can too. Our only challenge is how we work and teach our 1st graders at the same time...again, we are lucky. I cannot imagine how people who have seen their income drop to 0.

You made a general prediction.

My point is in your timeframe in which you'll say everything will be ****ed in weeks is too soon. Depending on the industry, the company, its competition, financial health and fundamentals outcomes will vary. Some are being crushed now and are doomed. Some it'll take a few months or a year. Some will come out of it ok without bailout $ sustaining their operations.
Agree, in 3 weeks there'll be a flood of orders for Jordans. Nike will do just fine. Buy Nike.

The idea that they are worried people will choose not to work is crazy

“Hype Beasts” and resellers are freaking out with Jordan’s getting release dates pushed back.

I PM'd icy with my apologies, I think we all want the same thing. Keeping it clean for the refs.

people said the same thing about Yangs UBI. Like 1000 dollars a month is going to make people quit there jobs:rolleyes:

I am not a UBI guy, but in this situation it makes sense. People cant work because the economy is shut down for a lot of people, but they still have to pay bills. So it works for a short time fix.

I'd rather that UBI money be used in a more focused manner, for mentoring programs, education, food. UBI as Yang proposed it is more like shooting a bullseye with buckshot
