Love it.

Hoyer is the ideal backup QB in this situation. He has full understanding of the offense, is invaluable for the scout team during the season and -- above all -- is the perfect mentor for Stidham during camp and maybe even more so through the season.
We essentially got Tom Bradys head in a jar on the sidelines now to help Stidham with the system.

It’s like you just started reading this thread. Yes, Winston. I’ve said it in two posts already.

And where’s the “system” and “this offense” stuff coming from as an excuse?

You mean the system that’ll now be changing now that Brady is gone and we now have a mobile QB with a different skillset than Brady? You seriously think the same system is going to be used?

Highly doubt they’re just going to take what Brady did for 20 years, insert Stidham and call it a day....

No matter the system, The patriots are looking for QBs that make smart decisions.

Winston threw 30 picks last season.

Nope...there is no benefit in Hoyer helping Stidham until it's certain Stidham is the guy. If Stidham is garbage there's no benefit in occupying a spot with a guy to help him. Continually go with 3 unknowns until you find your guy. Until we find a qb, Hoyer is just wasting a spot.

Lots of teams make this mistake. They have a young guy, and they bring in a washed up vet to mentor him. Young guy flops and you spent that entire time wasting a spot on your roster. Fill your qb roster spots with potential until you find your guy. At that point you can bring a Hoyer type in.

I disagree

Right, which was due to “his system” down in Tampa. Arians’ formula was sling and stretch the field.

Winston also threw the most touchdown passes in the entire league last season as well, so let’s not sit here and pretend the guy is a scrub.

Rely on your coaching, or replace your coaches. Don't waste the limited spots on your roster with washed up vets in an effort to help develop young projects. Not when you don't have a proven qb on the roster.

What does Bill value in the qb position? I would say it would decision making/limiting turnovers. Winston statistically was the worst qb in this regard.

I agree with this with the small, probably irrelevant caveat that apparently Winston got laser eye surgery recently and there's a nonzero (but probably close to zero) chance his ball security problems were due to having terrible vision. For that reason, I wouldn't hate us taking a flier if his market was cold.

Throwing 50/50 jump balls to receivers is not a BB formula. Might as well bring in Flacco.

Funny considering that Carson Palmers interception percentage was at his lowest under Arians “system” in Arizona.

Winston has no suitors and no starting job opportunities.

If Bill Belichick calls with a chance to compete for the starting gig on a one year deal, I’m pretty sure that’ll look pretty tempting.

Hoyer is the ultimate bandaid. He does nothing to move the needle and if Stidham isn’t the savior, this season is pretty much up in smoke.

You need to be bold here and take some risk. Hoyer is far from it.

All this is doing, is reiterating how dumb it was to let Brady walk. No succession plan at all in place.

Hoyer is here to be a backup to whichever young QB ultimately starts. It might be Stidham, it might be a rookie. Hell, it might even be Winston. It definitely shouldn't be a 30+ year old never-was, which is pretty much all of the current options. We already have that guy in Hoyer.

It sucks that Brady walked, but if he didn't walk, we would still in all likelihood go into 2020 with a worse version of a roster that was not even close to good enough last season.

Tbh it seems like Arians is as good as his players. I don't believe for a second he elevated any of his teams beyond their talent level. The quintessential example of this would be the #Chuckstrong season in which his players were very obviously playing hard for their other coach because he had cancer. Somehow, Arians parlayed this into immediately being considered a top 5 coach for most of a decade.

..couldn’t find a picture of him in a Pats jersey?

Completely different “system” with a completely different set of skill players and QB.

Perhaps you missed the part where Arians allowed Leftwich to revamp the offense in Tampa.

Clearly you’re just doing your best to try and be a Belichick apologists, but at least try to use a bit of reality.

Uh yeah, and that wouldn’t be the offense run here even if Winston was signed anyway, so not sure why you’d use that as a barometer for whether Winston is good or not.

We don’t have even close to the personnel where that would be even a remote possibility in the first place.

The roster that was a final game home win against Miami away from locking up the #2 seed?

Yeah I’d certainly take a repeat of that over whatever position we’re in now.

But it wouldn't even be as good as that roster.

Both offenses liked to stretch the field vertically. Palmer turned the football over less than Winston. That’s the reality of the situation.

Lots of time these days but riddle me this, batpersons.
Is there an explicit NFL rule forbidding hosts at QB?
Kraft is a billionaire...

Hoyer starting would be a unmitigated disaster

Right. Because Palmer never threw 22 interceptions with Arians, right?

You know what Palmer also never did with Arians and his offense? Lead the league in TD passes. Winston did.
