The place that worries me a lot is Florida. An older population that is susceptible + younger people who enjoy partying and don't exercise very much discretion (for good reason, I might add: warm weather and beaches, beautiful people, spring just beginning). Seems like the perfectly crafted climate (geographically, socially, and culturally) for COVID to thrive and ravage.

Not for the first time it occurs to me Bugs might have been on to something here:

Not a binary, either-or situation.

We have the financial means to support our country and its constituents, while simultaneously helping other nations and their people.

There is an ethical and pragmatic prerogative, as helping curb the spread elsewhere is, a.) the decent thing to do for humanity, and b.) also helps us maintain greater control of the virus here at home.

It's a no-brainer on multiple levels.
Why bother spending American money on Ebola that’s an African problem. O wait..

A population of 51M isn’t insignificant. And by all accounts, their response has been efficient and relatively effective. Of course, there are differences between countries, but it shouldn’t discount certain world populations dealing with the virus in better ways than others.

51 versus to around 400 million with undocumented.

I will just leave that number there. That changes the dynamic immensely,

It doesn’t change anything when you look at the most densely populated centers of each country and compare methods and results.

I don’t get what you’re missing but it’s a pretty simple comparison to make and then see which is an effective model vs which isn’t an effective model.

Nooo! We've been wintering in Florida and are thinking about when we should start our trek back up north. Although my wife and I have been practicing social distancing, hanging out by the pool or on the boat and only going out occasionally to the grocery stores, it's only in the last few days that social venues have started shutting down.

The trip back to Worcester will be a straight dash, with only some rest stop naps. Don't want to risk hotels.

It's not just masks.

Coronavirus crisis: Health care workers sound alarm from 'the front lines'

Estimated number of Americans who died from Spanish flu: 675,000
Estimated number of soldiers who died in WW1: 116,000

Worse case scenario, number of Americans dead from coronavirus: 1.6 to 2.2 million

British Study Predicts 22 Lakh Coronavirus Deaths In US, 5 Lakh In UK
That’s only because we have more than 3 times the population today. By that logic every flu season is the worst the world has ever seen because of the overall population. The Spanish flu was far more devastating. It was particularly deadly to people young and healthy. By comparisons the average age of deaths in Italy is 81. 99% of deaths are over the age of 60.
This is nowhere near the biggest crisis in US history.

Anyone else getting tired of this?

That 51M is in a space the size of Indiana just to put the containment 'dynamic' in perspective.
Why dismiss what South Korea has accomplished rather than learn from it and adapt it as much as possible to to the US?

More irresponsible journalism from the Atlantic.

The Crisis Could Last 18 Months. Be Prepared.

Written by a former Obama Admin official. Read to the last sentence and you get this: “But I expect to be in these sweats for at least another month—and I’m planning for two.”

Anyone else getting tired of this?

Not sure "this" cares if you're tired of it or not.

We may have another year+. Best to accept it and find other distractions in the meantime (books, video games, exercise) imo.

Keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better. It’s no different than the “but the Patriots cheat” line we are all so used to.

Again, I present exhibit A and exhibit B...

Please explain the loss of these subscribers. In China, you cannot simply just change or drop your plan once you have signed up. Almost all transactions are done via App, not paper cash. Where did these people go?

Exhibit C:

Please explain the complete lack of Air Pollution if everyone is "back to work". Just for fun, the source of this image is straight from good ol' NBC news...posted yesterday.
Air pollution falls as coronavirus slows travel, but scientists warn of longer-term threat to climate change progress

You say that with too much confidence. This could conceivably dwarf any other crisis by the time it's over. 12,000 new cases in NY today, now 22k total in NY.

Don’t bother. The point has been explained to him countless times, he has chosen to ignore it.

I am not dismissing it. What I am saying our economy affects the entire world. Just shutting everything down before you need to would cause worldwide issues. It isn’t as easy as pointing to one country's response versus another's.

My theory is we are all going to get it no matter what especially if you are in a big city. It is all about limiting wholesale exposure while keeping deaths at a minimum.

Didn't read it, but 18 months is not unrealistic. MIT released a study saying the same.

You know MIT, the place donny's uncle was a "super genius" at. Which is why donny is so good at this stuff.

Nothing to do with being a hater, it's a simple performance evaluation. They guy failed the test every day for 2 months. It wasn't one mistake, it was 60 consecutive mistakes.

The question is why you don't see that, cause everyone else does. If you really don't see this, you have a learning disability or some kind of disorder.

If everyone else does, then why are Trumps poll numbers trending up?

Might I suggest that the bubble you live in in biasing you.

I honestly don’t understand this at all. Why don’t you put your big boy pants on and share with the room why you think the federal government’s response has been capable and competent and worthy of praise?

Compared the the previous administrations inaction on H1N1 it is brilliant. Obama did NOTHING for 6 months Jack.
Are you saying that by the time the January 30th travel ban from China was enacted, it was too late? I agree with you. How many Chinese had already travelled to the US prior to the ban: g350,000?

The study also says, as the conclusion that travel bans by themselves are not effective without testing and mitigation measures such as social distancing.

1. Travel ban;
2. Testing;
3. Mitigation

1. Was enacted too late to matter;
2. Testing is just now getting to where it should have been at the beginning of February;
3. Mitigation measures were started too late because of 2 above, and are still not being employed with consistency. There is no national plan, rather a hodgepodge of local plans. No leadership.

Pretty the travel ban was pretty quick given the dishonesty of the Chinese government who were aware to the WUHAN virus in December 2019, actually the Chinese were negligentyl allowed the residents of Wuhan to travel; a; around China.

”this” meaning tired of being on lockdown, media reporting every death and putting it on the score board, media starting the “panic buying” hysteria, businesses closing.

This can not go on for very long or economy will collapse.

That money was for OTHER countries. You think we should send 120 million to other countries to deal with this? Maybe we should spend that on our own people.

If this isn't satire...wow.

Just wow.
