KEEPING OUR OWN COUNTS
We didn't think that we'd keep McCourty and Thuney. These are major additions to the team that we had signed a couple of days ago. And Slater and Butler help also.

DEFENSE
We had a top 5 defense by late last year. I have no reason to expect anything different this year. We will surely add a couple of LB's, and a DL. The draft will almost assuredly include a front 7 player or two. But, as far as planning, IMO the key is to add a LB to have approximately what we had last year. Anything else is gravy (a good idea) that could lead to a better defense than we had last year.

SPECIAL TEAMS
We lost Ebner. We will bring back King, Slater and Bethel. We just added Phillips and returner Byrd. We have a decision to make on Gostkowski.

OFFENSE
All I can say is that it is early.

OL
Bringing back Thuney is huge. A healthy Andrews would be huge, as well as a healthy fullback (hopefully Develin, but could be Johnson). We hope for something from Froholdt and Cajuste. We will likely add a couple of draftees plus Newhouse.

RUNNING GAME
The running game is the running game that Belichick chose, including the addition of Harris. I see no changes except for running behind better blocking. The RB's will again be a major part of the passing game. We might cut and replace Cannon (no cap effect), or not, or even redo his contract.

PASSING GAME
????
It's two days into free agency, and we have one of the worst passing offense in the NFL. Thankfully, we don't play the season in March, if we play it at all.

I suppose that I am OK with our #3, #4 and #5 WR's (Sanu, Harry and Byrd in some order). We even have a couple of 2019 UFA also competing for those roster spots. We also have a #3 TE in LeCosse. I'm not saying they we shouldn't consider upgrading Sanu and LeCosse. It's just that, for me, Sanu is an OK roster player, if we consider that he is competing for reps with Harry. Obviously, either of these players could be better than #3, or not.

We have a QB who we expect to compete for one of our QB positions.

That leaves us with 5 VERY MAJOR needs: QB, #1 WR, #2WR, #1TE, and #2TE. I suppose that we've had this many needs before, especially in the first couple of days of three agency. However, this year the needs are very focused to one aspect of the game.

We aren't in good cap shape, but we've been here before. We have many ways to add cap space, $20M with no players to replace. We also could use draft choices to trade for players.

Out of all the free agents we had this year, I think it says a lot that bb chose to resign slater and mccourty.

even at his advanced age, slater is still one of the best special teams players of all time and more importantly, a great glue guy in the locker room and play maker on the field.

mccourty is vital to bb’s pattern matching cover 3 defense as a communicator and playmaker. And again, another glue guy in the locker room.

Edelman?

Edelman, a 6th round pick and a 7th round pick to Tampa for Howard!

Brady gets his security blanket and we get a tight end and maybe a little cap relief.

I'm sure that Belichick would sign in a heartbeat. I don't think that TB would. They can simply wait for the price to drop. I doubt that you would get a 4th for what you offered, certainly not Howard.

Lost brady.

Not entirely sure how you quantify it but that's unrecoverable for this season.

Aside the obvious needs on offense, the D needs a pass rusher. You don’t want to rely on a manufactured pass rush as shown last year guys phasing out.

I think we make a surprise trade to move up for CeeDee Lamb or Jerry Jeudy

Has anyone heard anymore news on Wolfe? I’d love to bring him into the fold as well.

This is going to be a defense heavy draft. BB will stick with Stidham (He’s made big strides throughout the year).

While I hope you are right about Stidham making big strides, you’re just speculating. We have no clue what kind of strides he’s made.

The 2019 NE Patriots 5th ranked defense was vastly overrated.

The Boogeymen dominated vs terrible teams. After the Baltimore game, the Boogeymen were never the same. They were the ones who saw a ghost as the Baltimore offense shredded them. This paper tiger Pats D could stop post season teams like KC or Tennessee. Miami came in to town and schooled them.

Run defense has to get better and especially up the middle. The Mcourtys are old and so is Chung. I see the passing defense regressing in 2020.

I'd say the offense never stepped up to help the defense.

Whatever linebackers that are signed... they should be fast coverage guys that can chase down rb’s, te’s and qb’s....somewhere between 230-245 lbs.

And since they are thin at LB it’s probably not a terrible idea to use a 4-3 or 4-2 more with stout dt’s. They could use an old style 350 lb nt on those occasions when 3-3 or 3-4 might be better against a specific opponent.

No need to change anything in the secondary.

I completely agree with wr1, wr2, te1, te2. I think most agree we are seriously lacking youthful talent there.

I think the ol will be ok if Andrews is good to go and their are plans to replace Cannon in case he is not that effective...which I think will happen because of injuries and age.

I think the German fb is good enough if their are no other options but they may pick up another rb.

If we go to more of a 43, then we will need even more DT's than we need now.

We need to be stout in the middle, at LB and at DT (whether we run more 43 or 34). We have Hightower, Bentley, Guy and Fat Thor. We need much, much more.

Looks more and more like it'll be Stidham to me, and maybe a lower round QB and/or career backup to compete. I'm actually ok with it. I wouldn't prefer a retread like Dalton, Stafford, or whoever...maybe as a backup I'd take them.

WR is definitely an issue, and the OL isn't certain yet. Andrews makes or breaks a lot of things.

The D alignment will be interesting this year. Depending on what we wind up with will tell us a lot about where the team is going.

To sum up, there's still a lot of question marks, but we're still 4.5/16.5 months away from the preseason even, so...

How do you know this?
