This is just my opinion. I'm interested to see how others will lean on different points.

1. Kraft is such a fraud saying if Tom wanted to be here he would be. Sure completely on the Patriots terms. Kraft and Goodell are so made for each other.

2. Bill for better or worse did the math with Ernie and now was the time. I think much like when you watch the Two Bills he and Tom will have a relationship down the line but it had run it's course.

3. Tampa is at Foxboro in 2021. I have a feeling we won't have to wait that long. I'd bet Tampa plays in NE and they do joint practices during this upcoming preseason. It's too big of a PR move for the NFL not to want it and really both teams as well.

4. Who are you rooting for? For me it's both. I hope Tom gets another ring in Tampa and Bill wins another one here. At that point they're both the undisputed GOATs. 6 together and then another one separately. The haters can't lean on well he never won without the other.

5. Who will you watch? For me it's both. I'll record both games especially if they're on at the same time to condense my viewing time. I bet Tampa opens with New Orleans on Sunday night. They have KC on their schedule but in Tampa or I'd pick that as the season opener. They'll face Brees twice, Ryan twice, Bridgewater twice, Rodgers and Mahomes. NFL is going to love all those match-ups.

6. I bet it comes out that Manning actively recruited for Ariens. Tom and Peyton are friends and he really values his opinion.

7. Ariens also coached AB and I bet that's a done deal. Evans, Goodwin and AB is reaching Patriots 2007 level of weapons. Although AB is likely suspended for the first half of the year.

8. If somehow it ended up being Patriots vs Bucs in Tampa for the Super Bowl can you imagine the hype and the hatred? Who does America root for or more accurately against? I think they root for Tampa, unhappily.

9. I think Bill rolls with Stidham and I think he's better than TB at least statistically than he was in 2001. Few reasons for this. Will have the entire preseason (assuming Corona actually ends) with the 1's, he got to study one year under Tom to learn what it takes to be great, the coaching staff is much more established than it was with the scheme and players than they were at that point.

10. Pats still win the division. I know Buffalo and their acquisitions will get the pub in the national media and I expect the national media to all pick the Pats missing the playoffs but teams like the Bills tend to not move up in a linear fashion. I expect they'll take a step back and I'm not convinced Allen will progress.

11. Tampa makes the playoffs. Not sure they win the division with New Orleans down there. I think both of those teams beat up on the Panthers and Falcons though and make it in.

12. I hope the new Bucs uniforms are decent. The ones from the 70s-early 90s were probably the worst ever and then they had decent ones for a while and I have no idea why they switch to these most recent atrocities. The Derrick Brooks era jerseys were good. I actually like the helmet a lot.

13. Pats are going to start a youth movement. I'd expect players like Rex, Cannon and others who are frequently injured and have high cap numbers to be likely out of here in the near future. I think this season will be much like 2010 where you saw a roster turnover from the disappointing 2009.

14. There's more long term pressure on Bill to win. If Tom goes to Tampa and plays well but doesn't win he's 43 and counting. If the Pats start missing the playoffs or do a bunch of one and done's.....People don't put enough stock into Tom earning an average of 10M/year less than Rodgers as one example per season. That allows Bill to add as one example KVN and Jonathan Jones. Imagine the defense without those two players in the 2018 run to the SB especially against the Chiefs and Rams.

15. Bill is betting on Stidham only earning 1/20th of Brady's salary and sending that everywhere else to make the team stacked. There's a three year window on that if Stidham succeeds because it's unlikely he'll take discounts like Brady did and then you're spending at that top tier. It's why guys like Wilson and Rodgers don't have as good of a supporting cast. Mahomes is going to experience this in the near future.

The Pats have gotten themselves into a position where they're a bottom half of the league roster on offense, don't have the cap space to do much about it, and have a long track record of drafting almost nothing but pure bums at WR. They also have to reload some on defense now that Collins and KVN are bailing and much of the remainder of the D is on the wrong side of 30.

Belichick won't tank on purpose, but it's very much a transitional year even without accounting for Brady. To pay Brady enough to get him to take the team seriously they just make a sketchy cap situation worse and reduce their already-limited ability to reload the roster in 2020. It's a Catch-22 that can only be escaped by bailing on Brady entirely (and probably paying the next QB pennies on the dollar and accepting he might just suck out loud in 2020.)

From Brady's POV, if he stays he gets to play with a subpar offensive roster for subpar pay as he races towards the finish line of his career while Belichick is a pain in his ass every day. It's an endless replay of 2019 until he really is legally dead. The alternative is to make $30m per throwing to young stars in their prime like Mike Evans and Chris Godwin in his golden years with a coach who'll just be thrilled that he's not throwing 30 interceptions a year like the last guy.

Neither side took Brady staying seriously because it made no sense for either of them. The miracle is that this scenario didn't play out in 2015 instead of 2020.

Yeah, we’re just going to have to wait for that cap space to clear out. Don’t want them to tank and they won’t. Still expect them to be competitive and I think they will be.

Nice post, Everlong!

1. Kraft is Kraft and personally doesn't have to do the unpleasant things.

2. I agree. Bill needs an inexpensive QB and Tom needs to inherit a great Offense for his final three years. The math is the math. IMO, the whole "Tom can't take grumpy Bill anymore" is media driven ridiculous crap. I think their relationship is solid and mutually respectful. Each believes the other is GOAT, and each feels blessed to have collaborated so successfully for 20 years. These guys are co-authors of the greatest NFL Dynasty of all time: TWO DECADES!!!!

4. I'm with you. Love to see both get another Ring or two! ;) I disagree about the need for it. Both ate GOATs period. Any rational, knowledgeable fan has known it for years. Haters are idiots. I know I don't care about them.

7. I think AB is insane, or at least very troubled, based on his actions. I don't think he'll ever play again. That said, if he does, Tommy would love having him healthy and on the field.

9. I agree on Stidham. By many accounts, he is the real deal. Can't wait to see him develop. I am assuming that the Pats will be running a lot this season.

10. The AFCE will be a real battleground this year. I think 2 teams will make the playoffs. Hopefully the Pats win it.

11. I think the Saints and Bucs will slug it out and both make the Playoffs. I bet the Bucs win it. After all, Tom is constantly clutch. Dree, not so much.

I agree that Stidham will be given every chance to take over at QB, and he has the tools to do so. Just remains to be seen if he has the leadership skills to be a #1 QB in the NFL I would like to see a vet QB added to the roster (please get rid of Kessler) to assist Stidham.

The dream scenario is Stidham can actually play and is extremely cheap. It makes loading the team easier.

The leadership thing can be transferred to other players. Cam Newton had some great years, and is anything in the world, but a leader. As long as a team accepts this fact about a QB, it can work around it. The Pats and BB have shown great resilience around team-building and player versatility, so I think we could handle any leadership lacks in Stidham.

Joint practices are arranged by the teams and there’s no way in hell Belichick would want the distraction of having Tom Brady around NE’s practices. And if the League sent Tampa Bay to NE for an exhibition game (which I doubt they will) I bet Brady wouldn’t even make the trip.

Distraction isn’t even the least of it. He needs to ensure he doesn’t have a mutiny on his team; bringing them into contact with Brady that soon could be enough to both sabotage the new QB and have players question (and therefore not follow) Belichick’s instructions... Setting up lots of Adalius Thomas clones.

Who cares football is never coming back and we’re all going to DIE

  • Stidham may have better stats than Brady in 2001 but the NFL is completely different so am not sure if that matters or not. (Kirk Cousins is statistically better than Joe Montana) If he can establish himself as a middle of the pack QB this year with a few moments of brilliance portending a good upside I will be happy.
  • I understand why the Pats decided not to offer Brady a multi year contract and would prefer they just admitted it vs the spin.
  • Pats will always be the team I root for but I'll watch the Bucs and root for them and Brady.
  • I hope Brady passes Brees in TD's

It's pretty bi-modal. BB and Earnie probably felt they could either (a) see if TB12 would sign up for below market and keep the team together for one more season or (b) use a rookie QB deal as the basis of building a new core. Paying Dalton/Rivers/Brees/Bridgewater/etc was probably never on the cards.

Evans, Goodwin and AB is reaching Patriots 2007 level of weapons.
It would better overall when you factor in both TE’s. And they’re probably not done adding pieces to the offense.

Patriots vs Bucs in Tampa for the Super Bowl
They lose last year with the greatest QB of all time, yet they somehow take out Mahomes or a Ravens team the Pats D can’t match up with in route to a Super Bowl. That’s some delusion right there.

Brady did not want to stay in NE.

Kraft could do nothing about it. Its not about money. Brady left for a more talented roster on offense. Its that simple. A thin NE salary cap and a history of failure drafting WRs left little optimism that NE playmakers would get markedly better in 2020.

Mike Evans is simply a beast.
Chris Godwin shined last season.
AB if rumors are true.
OJ Howard is a very serviceable TE.
Ronald Jones is a good young RB.

Tampas roster is just better up and down when compared to NE.

Re-read the post. I said can you imagine. Not that I'm predicting it. It's not probable but it is plausible. The 2001 Patrtiots, 2007 Giants.....you just never know.

Brady's fixation on Antonio Brown is just downright weird. Things went south last year when Kraft pulled the plug on him.

I will be rooting against the Chiefs and Ravens period!!
If any other team besides either of them wins SB next year I will be happy.

I would not mind seeing Phillip Rivers and the Colts do well.
Rivers have never won a SB

If you were to build the perfect WR for Brady it might be Brown minus the mental case aspect. Brown is a legit HOF-Type player that can literally do anything on the field ... He just can't get/stay on the field.

I followed Bledsoe after he was gone and rooted for him to do well. I'll watch Brady closely too.

Just as long as Kraft’s hands are clean of all this. He’s the martyr and got his poor little nice soul trampled over by big bad Tom Brady.
