Thuney gets tagged

His CAP might be somewhat significant, but he's still 9th in the league overall for Right Guards. And that stands to go DOWN as others are signed to higher money.
Thats my point. I don't see BB allocating $23m in cap space for 2 guards in 2020.

I agree. Actual cash for Shaq is reasonable.

I don't see that being the case either. You're ignoring that a long term deal drops that number significantly..

I'm not ignoring anything.

Next 4 years Shaqs cap hit is ~$9m, $10m, $10m and $9m.

If Thuney signs an extension expect his numbers to be higher than Shaqs.

Didn't see that coming. I thought for sure they'd let him walk and recoup a 3rd rounder.

So if nothing changes, Thuney is accounting for $14.07m in 2020

Don't forget, Tom Brady is the current GM of the NEP.

What does the new CBA say about tag and trade? Anything new? Thought this is borderline outlawed.
Can’t be too frowned upon. I feel like this happens with every big pass rusher that should hit the open market each year. Nah, you’re right. If we do it, it’ll be the unleashing of hell.

SMH.. Love how round up to suit your argument.

8.7125, 9.775, 10,25, 8.775. Those are the next 4 years of hits.

Have you actually looked at other guards? Have you looked to see that Mason is only 9th currently for RGs and that he'll been dropping some?

Yes, the Tag number puts Thuney at the top for LG, but let's stop pretending like it's going to stay there.

There is no guarantee that Thuney's 1st year number will be higher than Shaq's. He's probably get more SB and more Guaranteed money, but that doesn't mean his number will be higher immediately.

Do we need a poll to see how many people understand that unless Thuney signs the tag in the next couple of days, the patriots will lose out on whoever they might otherwise use the $14M for (Brady, WR, TE, anyone)?

This looks like a placeholder while we negotiate a long term deal with Thuney. As was said, the deal might have been signed already if the new CBA were in place a couple of weeks ago. As it is, the team is doing a lot every day.

Yeah as I understand it, he has to sign the tag to be traded, right?

This isn't about winning a ****ing argument. Rounding up/down makes makes it quicker to type. If you want to add 200k and commas be my guest.

Hypothetical: in 2021 Shaq has a $10m cap hit. If NE does a long term deal w/ Thuney his hit might be $19m. (which was Shaq in 2018) That is $29m for 2 guards.

If you don't think that is a lot for two players on the o line playing the same position, thats your belief.

I'm repeating my point now. I'm out.

It's frowned upon and arguably against the letter of the rule but it does happen. Just not often and it probably introduces some animosity from the player.

Pretty much nobody thinks we're just going to keep him on our books with this 1 year tag (no trade, no extension in 2020). That probably means we will.

Thuney will be on our books when the season starts, and we look for money to sign anyone.

When it comes to allocating cap space, if you want to discriminate between LG and RG be my guest.

discriminate? you still have to play 2 guards........you have a young and cheap left tackle, you don't know who is going to be playing center, and cannon has a bigger cap hit than mason. schematically, keeping the 2 guards consistent is what makes the most sense. especially if you're not going to pony up 30M for a QB

with Andrews at 14M, it's 38M in cap space next year for the starting OL.........that's not much

Yes, I believe that a LG who can step in at LT (even on an emergency basis) is worth more than a RG.

I did not see this coming at all.

If they've really decided to move on from TB (and I'm not persuaded that is actually the case), I wonder if they'll be in on KVN as well.

Need to sign LBs
Need to sign WRs
Need to sign TEs
Need a vet QB

They may go cheap in some areas but if they want quality they will need to spend $.

If the team needs to fortify multiple positions, paying two guards on the higher end of the cap scale isn't the smartest thing to do.

it starts on the lines........without talent on the line, WR doesn't really matter

Of course but since they already have a LT they don't need to splurge on a LG.
