You can't really turn a shotgun on yourself. A small kid could barely lift one.

In a stressful situation - home invasion - actually hitting the invader with a pistol is pretty remarkable unless you've had lots of training (and even then, the hit rate is incredibly low. One flinch, one reaction to turn away, and you missed.

I don't shoot anymore and haven't for decades, but when I used to, we had a saying at the skeet club: Close don't count except in horseshoes, hand grenades, nukes, and a 12-gauge.

If you want advice or even care, my position is that you're a lot safer in a house with kids without having a gun in your house, by all statistics I've ever seen.

Having said that, every situation is different, and this is totally your choice. I do believe, just logically, that a shotgun is far less likely to cause a home tragedy than a pistol which can be turned in the hand to look down the barrel.

Thanks. That's a great point.

Lots of red tape. I would imagine by the end of the week that hundreds of thousands of test kits will be made available. It's important to realize the FDA has stringent rules - the quality has to be there and just because South Korea and other nations are testing their citizens in masses does not mean their kits are reliable.

The FDA is a joke. Just look at mj/thc/cbd and opiates. You can't take them seriously. WHO on the other hand...

The ugliness of people's behavior is showing how rotten to the core some % of our country has become.

There is no sense of community, no sense of trying to work through this together. Just '**** you gonna get mine'.

People love to talk about loving this country and call themselves patriots but that is completely at odds with a lot of the behavior we're seeing.

If we're not in something like this together then what is the ****ing point of a country in the first place?

I see it too, but remember 9/11 or Hurricane Sandy.

The community responses to those were amazing. At least around me.

It takes a little while, but Americans respond.

WTF?? Face it. The leadership failed miserably. Red tape? What do you think a state of emergency is for?

So can a dog's growl.
I'm in a city w/ 4 kids. Have the 100+ pound shepherd that would have to be dealt with first. Lax sticks, bat and probably grabbing a s/g+machete tonight. Cupboards full here and talk of "rations" being distributed by schools.

Stores close to empty and no shipments coming in for over a week. If 90% of the country doesnt have 1k in savings, I doubt theyre going to be able to get through whats coming. Schools in NH closed for minimum 3 weeks, up from suggested but not mandatory 2 weeks.

We've only just begun.

So as of now, what do you think the odds of this affecting week 1 are?

I mean if summer camps are canceled/delayed, would that necessarily mean we wouldn't have week 1 in early Sept?
Imho this is a possibility...just my 2 cents of course...

Plus you can't eat a shotgun. A 100lb dog would go a long way.

The Brits are adopting a much different approach. Isolate the elderly and infirm- then let the virus work through the population to create herd immunity. The elderly can then renter the population with virtually no one to get them sick. So no school closures, no restaurants closed, open transportation systems etc. Keeping the elderly isolated will help ease the need for critical care. The initial recommendation is 4 months.

They're insane. The earlier "news" that this was only hurting the elderly and immuno-compromised isn't even living up to newer reports. Half of the people in ICU in France yesterday were under 50.

Good luck...

Barack didn't do it until 6 months after the 1st case of H1N1 in April of 2009. We'll be fine.

DECLARATION OF A NATIONAL EMERGENCY WITH RESPECT TO THE 2009 H1N1 INFLUENZA PANDEMIC
BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
A PROCLAMATION
October 24, 2009

“NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, including sections 201 and 301 of the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1601 et seq.) and consistent with section 1135 of the Social Security Act (SSA), as amended (42 U.S.C. 1320b-5), do hereby find and proclaim that, given that the rapid increase in illness across the Nation may overburden health care resources and that the temporary waiver of certain standard Federal requirements may be warranted in order to enable U.S. health care facilities to implement emergency operations plans, the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic in the United States constitutes a national emergency. Accordingly, I hereby declare that the Secretary may exercise the authority under section 1135 of the SSA to temporarily waive or modify certain requirements of the Medicare, Medicaid, and State Children's Health Insurance programs and of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act Privacy Rule throughout the duration of the public health emergency declared in response to the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic. In exercising this authority, the Secretary shall provide certification and advance written notice to the Congress as required by section 1135(d) of the SSA (42 U.S.C. 1320b-5(d)).”4

Maybe, maybe not. The disease may be way undercounted. There may be more mild disease than we realize. Achieving herd immunity may not take that long - months? The rate of serious disease in young, healthy people is low. Watch what happens in Wuhan now that restrictions are eased. If disease does not spike, they may have herd immunity.

Or the truth...
Did Obama Declare Swine Flu an Emergency Only After 'Millions' Were Infected?

Am I naive thinking that test kits will only reduce (rather than increase) the hysteria, regardless of how many positive cases come up? To me, the concern right is simply not knowing who has it, or if someone can go hug parents/grandparents without legitimately endangering their lives. Even if testing reveals that a million people have it, then those people can quarantine and we should be able to largely mitigate the spread from there?
