we’re going to run out of tinfoil for your hats at this rate

Yeah, okay... @QuantumMechanic is the last person this forum who would exaggerate; I don't think he's getting swept away by mass hysteria here. It seems that the more concerning mindset is the total denial that something really bad is about to effect everyone.

I think a lot of this is the modern US mindset; most people have never had to go through a real devastating pandemic, war, etc. Not that I'm any different, as I'm not 40 yet. But let's try to put some perspective on this; it will happen regardless of how much we want it to go away.

you’re right

comparing a virus with less than 200,000 cases and a few thousand deaths to something that infected third of all living people and killed tens of millions is not premature or dramatic at all

"this isn’t going away in a week, or a month. We are just seeing the tip of the tip of the iceberg, maybe a small fraction of a percent so far". Those are opinions, those are not! facts. As this is a new variant of Covid, it is true we don't know. So here's another opinion that is just as valid: Covid19 may act like influenza, with its transmission potency dropping significantly with warming temperatures associated with months outside of the winter season.

What we do know if the 19 variant is new to humans but other variants are not. Information on other Covid viruses suggest (though certainly not certain) that warming temperatures will significantly lessen the spread:
"The warmer it gets, the more difficult the conditions are for many viruses. "The coronavirus is surrounded by a lipid layer, in other words, a layer of fat," Pietschmann explains. This layer is not very heat-resistant, which means that the virus quickly breaks down when temperatures rise"
"
"Coronaviruses are types of viruses that typically affect the respiratory tracts of birds and mammals, including humans. Doctors associate them with the common cold, bronchitis, pneumonia, and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), and they can also affect the gut.

These viruses are typically responsible for common colds more than serious diseases. However, coronaviruses are also behind some more severe outbreaks."

Here is a full source if you’re interested in how the lipid reacts to various temp and humidity conditions. However I am not going to hinge my hope on springtime ridding the world of this virus. That is painfully optimistic.

Saying the Coronavirus is the Spanish Flu of our time isn't the same as saying the Coronavirus is just like the Spanish Flu.

What it is: an unsubstantiated opinion, one that is likely to induce panic which will lead to increased stress related diseases.
What it isn't: a fact, and at this point not even remotely so.

The "doctor" claims my son will eventually be 6'7', but he's wrong! My son is less than four feet tall!!!

Stop being such a dog faced pony soldier

Okay, fine. The doc told congress today he expects between 70-150 million Americans to contract the disease. A significant number, something less than 20%, but still very significant - maybe 10-15% - will require hospitalization, most for weeks, and some of them will need ventilators.

That's 7-22.5 million people in a country that has 1 million beds (70% of which are full with non-corona patients.

The death rate in the countries/regions that handled this well (mostly the SARS areas) is around .5%, which would be terrible, but in the places where they got behind the 8-ball and overwhelmed their healthcare system (Italy), the death rate is 10 times that and more (6% currently).

Italy is locked down, heel-to-toe-to-knee. The outbreak was in the Lombardy area. This isn't third-world stuff - Lombardy is Milan. It's rich. It's healthcare is first world - rated way better than USA's. You know what the doctors are doing in Lombardy right now? They're choosing which patients get the ventilator. In other words, they're choosing which patients to let die.

6%. 6% of 70-150 million people. 100,000 beds.

We're way behind. We knew about this in December. The first US case was almost certainly in early-to-mid January. We were offered test kits. We refused, and instead went to the private marketplace.

We've lost weeks.

Make all your stupid Biden jokes, but ANYONE running right now, or from the beginning, would not have screwed this up as horribly as the idiot in the White House. If Bill Weld was President right now, we'd be weeks ahead of where we are now. Same with Biden, Bernie, and all the rest.

For anyone who wants to now call me snowflake or say it's media hysteria...tell it to the people who know what's going on. Cheeto Jesus gave his mumbling and incoherent speech tonight and the circuit breakers popped again to stop trading on market futures.

There are a dozen things Trump could have and should have announced many days ago, or even tonight, that would have mitigated that. But I guess Jared Kushner is still doing his research.

Coronavirus serves an excellent platform for all of your attention-starved Facebook friends to report the symptoms of their hypochondria and subsequent self-quarantine.

I’d tell you don’t waste your time with this on here but I’m also happy that someone else is making these points so I don’t have to waste MY time!

You're welcome - and that's about all I have to say on it. It's all fine and dandy when everything's going well, but when the **** hits the fan, well, that's when all the things we took for granted are shoved in our faces.

We have an incompetent, rather stupid boob in the White House. He had no idea of what he's doing, other than when he's using the power of his office to enrich himself or his spawn. Anyone wondering why the UK wasn't included in his not-really-a-ban ban? Trump has golf courses there.

He fired the pandemic response team two years ago. He's cut the CDC budget repeatedly, forcing them to remove teams in places, including China, where we were worried. Trump's answer? "We can hire them back if we need them."

Yeah, no.

Good read actually. But please notice the repeats of "unknown" and "can" (as opposed to known and do).
And I'm not hinging anything on spring. What I am providing is both factual information as well as relaying opinions that are going to rebuke your statement that this new variant is not going away and going to get worse.
Fact, Corona 19 variant is new to humans. Fact, we know that many known Corona viruses are often significantly negatively affected by warmer temperatures. Fact, I am not saying this is or isn't going away or that it will end with the first hot day of Spring. There's too much unknown to make that a statement of fact. Fact, those on public boards stating as fact this is not going away and going to get much worse, or it's like the flu pandemic earlier last century, is likely to help cause panic that will lead to stress related illness.
How unfortunate for them especially if it doesn't get significantly worse, right?

You guys understand that slapping Trump on the ass for doing awesome or kicking Trump in the balls for screwing up...has absolutely zero bearing on the potency and likely course of this virus, right? Because I don’t think you do.

Trump Administration Restricts Entry Into U.S. From China
it's from your fav paper. :D
Trump bans foreign nationals who have traveled to China from entering the US
U.S. Announces China Coronavirus Travel Ban | News & Resources | Dorsey
people believe this travel ban happened. because it actually happened. why it blows your mind that people would believe something that happened is anybody's guess.

Oh I was referring to the second part of your post about how’d there’d be more cases here without Trump’s swift action (not the part about the travel ban that didn’t apply to most of the people who would have come here from China and also was announced only after most major airlines had already suspended flights)

Well I guess that’s that then

more property and job openings than I’d previously thought

It’s a shame society can’t just vote on the 1 mortality in 1000 for your age bracket.
