Mohammed Sanu to have surgery

As bad as he was, the sad fact of the matter is that after Edelman got injured he was easily our most talented WR. That’s how bad the 2019 offense was.

“Lost mobility doesn't explain the poor route running...”

We have a new leader for dumbest statement of the day.
Should have been more clear, but made a quick post.

Obviously lost of mobility will reduce the ability to make quick cuts, and therefore make beating single man coverage more difficult to beat. However, the ability to read zone coverage and find the open spot would not be affected, since it is purely a mental thing

As an example, Edelman was far more beat up and slowed down by injuries this season, but he was still able to run smart routes that exploited zone defense. Sanu was out of place a lot of the times.

The blocking comment referred to the playoff game against the Titans where Sanu went after the second, deeper placed DB, instead of going after the closest defender. That stopped a key 3rd down and possibly cost the game.

Sanu will still be a terrible WR and should be upgraded at all costs.

Sanu joined the team midseason and promptly got hurt. He's been a reliable 60 catch guy his whole career, but he's a second fiddle receiver. Comparing him to Edelman in any way is ridiculous. But you ain't gonna buy a comparable receiver with $6.5m. Sanu himself would cost $10m on the open market.

Yes it slowed him down

But i don't think for a second that he would be anything more than mediocre even at his normal self.

Not worth his contract then, much less now IMO

We spent too much to bring in this middling veteran WR. He caught a lot of balls in his first game but got injured and wasn’t the same all year. Fans are calling to cut him as his cap numbers are too high for what you get.

But enough about Danny Amendola’s first year. What’s this about Sanu?

This was literally 100% the Amendola take on this board, for what it's worth. Brady6 where you at

I don't understand why players play seriously hurt. On the one hand we are told that the NFL is super competitive and you could lose your job any day but on the other hand are the backups so terrible that they aren't better than players with sprained ankles?

Sadly, the trade was a bust. 2nd-round wasted. Clip him and save 6.5m towards a better WR.

He is not a #1. #2 is marginal as well.

he is a number 4 receiver.

Much less a high sprain which is even worse. Never understood why they kept running him out there, and didn’t give it proper time to heal. I get we needed WR help, but it always seemed like it was a lose the battle, and lose the war kinda head scratching decision. I put it on the medical staff.

the real question might be why trade for a wounded wide receiver, who when healthy can’t separate, but made a living Against dime corners because Julio Jones and hopper were covered by four guys on most plays.

The injury only made a bad situation worse. Sanu came from a team with two very good receivers taking pressure off of him. Here, he didn't have that luxury seeing as the only real threat was Jules.
It's not like he was suddenly double teamed or the CB1 covered him.

He got hurt and never got acclimated.

Trivia: In the BB era, how many WRs picked up midseason did well that did not have prior experience in the system?

There is no question Sanu was bad but there are reasons for it.

He was 27th in receiving yards among WRs a season ago.

Yeah, Sanu's been a consistent 60/800/4 guy his entire nine season career as a second or third receiver on two different teams, and he was on pace for it last year again before the trade (and on pace to exceed it after the Baltimore game, in which he got hurt). That's right about in line with Amendola's best seasons with the Patriots and more or less the statline you expect from any #3/4 option (i.e. in recent years, the next guy up after Edelman, Gronk, and White) in the Patriots offense. On the open market, you'd need about $10m to buy that sort of production. Sanu was acquired because he was a consistent producer and his cap hit is extremely modest. He's far from an exciting player but it's hard to see a team as cash-strapped as the Patriots replacing him with anyone better without paying money they don't have, especially if they're going to spend money on a true #1, and other than a swiftly aging Edelman it's not like the wide receiver depth chart is full of known talents.

How can a team be so snakebit at WR?

Its supposed to be the best WR draft in years. Maybe GOAT.

If the Pats cant find at least 1 stud in this draft, then its time to get Bobby Grier back on the payroll.

Not every WR can understand & execute Patriots playbook. WR's come in with great numbers from previous team and bomb out here. It may be likely that Sanu can do well in Bengals simple playbook but cannot master the Patriots playbook.

If you draft a speedster (ala, Henry Ruggs) you may not need someone from the slot who needs to more underneath than a vertical threat player.

Very few if any WRs with "impressive" numbers from other teams have bombed for the Patriots, that's just narrative. If the offense is difficult to grasp, it's because of how reliant it is on being on the same page as Brady - and therefore understandable that a player acquired midseason would not be able to integrate fully (with missed practices due to injury only exacerbating that issue).

These are all the same arguments people used to argue Amendola was a bust and should be cut after his first season, too.

If you can't make hard cuts, your routes get rounded, and you're thinking more about your ankle potentially exploding than you are the right reads. It's not an excuse, you're out there you've gotta do you job, but some of you people need to give these guys a break when they're playing hurt.
Thank you. People often take the human element out of it.

He was injured dude....

It was apparent to everyone who actually saw what was going on and wasn't just looking for scapegoats to blame for the teams struggles. We got Sanu for a much better deal than Sanders with the extra year. He just got hurt. It happens. We weren't about to IR a WR we just traded for to solve an issue at WR.
