Who do the Pats select with the 23rd overall pick?

Put me in the group that thinks WR will be a lot better next year, even without a big addition.

Harry was a rookie that missed half the year. I think it was hard to ever expect a big contribution from him this year.

Sanu coming in mid season isnt easy, and he had an ankle injury that may have hindered him physically here.

More time to get on the same page with Tom for Sanu and Harry will make a big difference. To a lesser extent, it will for Meyers and Olzewsky as well. WR for the Pat's Pat's always been more about skill and precision than physical talent.

Imo, the biggest issue with the offense was the lack of production at TE. But I dont think that position is addressed at 23.

I also think the OL could be better without a huge addition. Having Wynn back made a difference. Getting Andrew's back should help even more. I may be putting too much faith into youngsters, especially without Dante, but there are two talented players coming back in Froholdt and Cajuste. Cajuste should be able to be the swing tackle at least next year. Maybe push for time at guard, or push Cannon.

I think going interior DL is the most likely direction. It's hard to pay for a difference maker up front in FA. So you hope for it in the draft.

So i vote DL, with trading down as the other most likely decision. Hopefully TE is addressed with the trade down or with one of the 3rd round picks(or a move up from one).

Well duh, a kicker!

Devin McCourty will likely be gone this offseason. I think with our 23rd pick, we should take Xavier McKinney. He is the perfect BB player. He is very versatile, great in the run game. He reminds me of Minkah Fitzpatrick!

It would be definitely good for our cap space. It is also truly a need regarding the age of our Secondary. We probably have to replace the Starters nearly within the next two years at least. With DMac FA, JMac always injured and old, Gilmore 2 years left, Chung old and injured and Harmon 29 years old. He could learn from our vets and we should start replacing them over the time year by year that we still have experienced guys..
I would rather take McKinney for saving DMac's 7/8 Mio. Cap Space (just guessing the amount) and investing them into an offense Weapon Brady trusts more than an Offense Rookie instead of keeping DMac and give TB12 an Rookie Offense Player as number one ( at TE Position for example).

My concern is that he is very important for the team and not just on the field..

mid you watch the lsu - Alabama game you will see burrows destroy him all game long.

We simply cannot go into next season with this WR corps.
I agree.

But have you seen our TE group? The worst the NFL has seen—in 25 years!

Trade down. We’re in rebuilding mode. And we need to add a decent pick. No second-rounder because BB pulled the panic lever for lackadaisical MS who played like a POS.

Captain Stone is rubbing off on me. I apologize.

If a high ranking OT or DL slips to 23 then I would pick, if not then I agree trade down and select in R2,R3

Just a question.....if a top 3 wide reciever fell to 23 would BB select him on the basis if brady was back or not ? I mean would this be seen as an investment for when brady is eventually gone ? (There is a thought in other threads he does not appear to like throwing to rookies ??)

Various options depending what we do in Free Agency... Personally i can see us trading down unless someone falls to us.

I would use the Draft mostly for our defense holes and the free cap space for offense players in Free Agency. (Hooper and Anderson).

#23 is a high pick, there's a lot of room below that to stay in the 1st round (or very high 2nd round) if we should trade down - e.g.
- moving down a few spots to 26/27 should get us a 4th
- moving down a few more to 30/31 should get us a 3rd
- moving down 11-12 spots to 34/35 should get us a 2nd, or a 3rd & 4th. This one would be sweet, giving up #23 for a high 2nd and a low 2nd. We have a lot of needs.

If we get 2 second rounders, i would go for Lewis or Baun to replace a LB FA and an DT like Davis, Blacklock etc., just a DT who is the best available Disruptor with Pass rush Skills.

I could also see BB going after a CB and move him to FS, if no Safety is worth a second rounder and DMac is gone.
The O-Line could be adressed in the third round. Tight End and WR as well.

If aWR they felt was too good to pass up, they’d absolutely take him. That position is a very high need for them right now. Having said that, I expect a trade down, a DL, or an OL in that order for 23.

This year draft is loaded with talented WR and if we trade down we will also have opportunity to grab one of them. A year ago BB did something unusual for him - took a WR in first round. I highly doubt he will do the same move again. However BB is so unpredictable. If he has a particular WR on his radar he might take him with 23rd pick.
Personally I would take McKinney or bolster DL or OL with our first pick.

For OL - Should be noted that Rds 1-3 we usually go after prospects that played Tackle in college.

I think we trade down, but I feel that would be a mistake. Pick #23 is a primo pick. A LOT of great talent will be available at #23, make the damned pick.

Who would you take with the #23?
I doubt that one of our favorites will fall down, but if that happens i would also not trade down,
If not, try to land a high second/third or two seconds...cause we have so many holes to fill in, FA Concerns and not much cap space when TB12 is back..and some of the guys in the late first round could also be high secound round picks depending on what the teams at this spots will do and who they like..and if for example Lewis/Aiyuk/ or a DL/OL player we like falls out of the first we could grab them with a high second rounder and then have an additional high third round instead of using our #23 for them.

As far as #23, It's too early to really tell, prior to the Combine and/or Pro Days. But there will be some great talent available at #23. It's very rare to be in this position. I know we got Wynn at #23 two years ago, but we usually don't pick that high.

What this team needs is explosiveness on offense. It's so obvious. A WR like Jalen Reagor is just what the doctor ordered. EXACTLY the type of player the Pats need. IF they feel Ruggs is the guy instead, trade up if you have to. Tee Higgins should be there, as well as Justin Jefferson (depending on their combines). You can trade two 3's to get back into the 2nd round if there is someone else they target.

Either way, I expect an off the wall pick in the 1st, and three head scratchers in the 3rd. Or two off the wall picks in the 2nd if they trade their 1st.

Honestly, IF they take care of TE & WR in free agency, I still hope they pick one of each in the draft, BEFORE the 4th round. I'm prepared for that not to happen though.

I was somewhat pleased with the 2019 draft. Liked drafting a WR in the 1st round, just not the receiver we picked, wanted Metcalf, and never thought he'd be available at 32, let alone 64. Could've picked him at 32, or kept our 2nd round picks and used one of them on him. Imagine Harry, Metcalf and TE Irv Smith instead of Harry and SlowJuan. Oh well.

It's been well documented that I hated the SlowJuan pick. Let's get past that, I actually liked all the rest of the picks, and as per typical Patriot's procedure, most of them were red shirted to next season, whether physically going on IR, or just sitting on the bench. Loved the Winovich, Harris, Cajuste, Froholdt, Stidham, Cowart, Bailey & Webster picks. All excellent value and players with excellent potential (though we lost Webster).

So we can get a home run at #23, have THREE 3rd round picks which we could either select players or trade up for a 2nd. But for the love of the football gods, please just draft a player at #23.
