Mookie Betts - Traded to Dodgers w/David Price.

Yeah. I’d rather him get to FA, and see what the top offer is, and then top it.

I don’t think he’s getting 12/420. I’m not even sure he asked for that much. The team could have leaked a fake number to make him look bad like they always do when someone leaves.

Then once the numbers are out make the decision. If he walks, fine. But don’t trade him. He had a chance to be the best Red Sox player of all time. He was exciting, dynamic, beloved in the clubhouse and in the community, and homegrown. That’s who you overpaid for. If you have to eat 3 years on the back end, fine.

Maybe if we hadn’t given out deals to Price and Eovaldi which were obviously bad from day 1 we wouldn’t have had to sacrifice Mookie.

Also baseball’s economics are ****ed in general and the sport is dying because of it. This is the latest example. One of the marquee teams in the sport just traded one of its all time best players to get under the tax. What a joke.
he already asked for 12 and 420 this week. If he walked you get nothing. That doesn't make any sense. If you want to blame somebody. Blame betts. He obviously doesn't want to play in Boston. The Red Sox tried several times to re sign him.

The Dodgers are finally going to get their WS in 2020. They were cheated out of 2 WS and now they are fielding the best lineup in baseball.

Best review/thoughts on all this, IMHO, are here: the joy of sox

I'm good with all this. I don't like winning with the biggest payroll in baseball. Even 2018 is tainted to me, given that the Sox outspent everyone else in baseball in that decade. That's like rooting for Google.

Boo hoo. Mr. I look at it as a business is butt hurt his employer also looked at it like a business.

What a grade A moron. No wonder he can’t adjust to off speed away.

Bringing in Dave Dombrowski was going to end like this. Everybody knew that.

Fortunately, the Dodgers are there once again take the big salaries. I'm glad to see Price go, and the cost of a re-build was Mookie Betts. Price gave them what they needed to win one WS and they gave him the support he needed to break his post-season curse. That worked out for both sides. Betts' departure is sad, but it's better than two or three top-flight mid-career guys being jettisoned to create salary cap sanity.

Bloom and O'Halloran now get their chance to show what they can do. Fireballer Graterol and OF Alex Verdugo are two young top players. There's lots left to do, but no reason why they can't be competitive in 2020 with their core of players, a healthy Sale, and some good decisions. A manager might help. too.

Athletes annoy the crap out of me by pulling the “it’s a business” line.

When they’re signing a $100M contract, there’s nothing “business” about it. It’s all just because they want to win.

Then when they get replaced by a younger guy who is cheaper, and the cost no longer justifies the production, we hear about the dark, harrowing business side of the sport.

I don't get any Red Sox fan who says "It was clear he never wanted to be here" or believe the 12/420 report, that was only reported by Lou Merloni, who is a grade A doofus and would probably believe anything the team told him. I'll bet anyone on here $50 that Mookie doesn't get those numbers. Very few people know what Mookie is thinking, certainly not any of us fans. What's clear is that he loved being a part of Boston and the community and loved the fans. Who knows what he thought about the team, maybe he was disgruntled about the arbitration offerings, but he's a Scott Boras client so he's not going to take a hometown discount, nor should he.

Instead a minority of Sox fans are blaming Mookie, when we have a front office that made a series of horrific deals that were clearly bad as soon as they were signed, and then claimed poverty when it came time to resign someone who could have been the best Red Sox player since Ted Williams. The Red Sox could obviously have afforded him. They rake in hundreds of millions in profit each year and the owner is worth billions. Paying him an extra 5 million a year would relative to the 10/300 we offered would clearly have been fine. I don't see how people get all worried about the finances of the team when there's only a tax, not a cap, which we could get under in a year or two if we stopped giving out contracts to Price, Eovaldi, Sandova, Castillio, and the rest of the riff-raff.

Nobody should sign with ownership on this. I saw rumors that they want to sell the team in a couple years anyway so this is just a move to help that process - no baseball reasons whatsoever, just a huge dump on the fans to they can exit and make billions. **** John Henry. I hope someone swabs the deck of his yacht with coronavirus.

Go look up McCutchens’ stats after his year 27 season. That is Betts’ comparable. Tell me that’s worth a 10 plus year contract at 40 per.

i dont like the fact that we traded Mookie but if you think he is going to command a salary that you cant/dont want to afford, then trade him for what you can get. I like the fact they traded Price with him. Bad contract and the guy is a tool. More bad contracts to Eovaldi and extending Sale dont help. DD is an idiot and as predicted, ruined this team while he was here. Sale's arm will most definitely fall off this year and i doubt he makes it to June. I was hoping for a bigger return, but i like Verdugo and Graterol. Would have been nice to get on more player from LA (Downs or Ruiz), but it is what it is. Bloom is just doing what he was brought in to do. I am willing to give him a chance because i have seen the Tampa teams he has put together. time will tell

If you believe Mookie will have the same career as McCutchen then obviously you wouldn’t give him the contract. That’s your prerogative and that’s fine.

I don’t believe they’ll have the same career though. So agree to disagree on that and I’ll bump this thread in 2026 and we’ll see who was right.

OK, until then. See you all in 2026.

schedule him for Tommy John surgery now and get it over with
His velocity is back up to where it was before surgery. 100 mph. he had the surgery in 2016 according to the big show on weei.

lol i was talking about david price.
I know you were.

Price would’ve been fine for a 3rd or 4th starter at a much more reasonable cost. We all wanted to dump that contract.

I'm so happy he's gone. I didn't want him infecting the young players with his sh!tty attitude.

Mookie will probably test the market in free agency. It could be a 1 year hiatus.
