TMZ reporting the passing of Kobe Bryant

I was never a fan of Kobe Bryant. While I do not know what happened exactly in Colorado, I believe that he was remorseful and had since then made up for it. It has been an interesting 24 hours for me reading all the accolodates from different people, athletes, celebrities, and etc.... never really knew how many people he helped over the years.

He was a great player for sure....

Regarding the plane crash, I have nothing of any actual substance to add and am by no means any type of aviation guy. But that won't stop me.

In 8th grade we had a science teacher who gave us some long glass straws to bend. I don't remember why. He told us to be cautious and to heat the glass with a flame, bend it, and then wait until it had cooled down entirely (a few minutes) before going onto the next bend point to heat. He said what would happen is no one would get burned until they stopped focusing on the caution and waiting for everything to cool, and then people would start getting overconfident, cutting corners on the time needed to cool, and eventually we would all burn ourselves (these were of course very minor, but it felt kind of like getting shocked.)

Sure enough, for about ten minutes everyone starting shaping their glass straws with zero incidents. Sure enough after ten minutes a couple of people burned themselves. And after about 30 minutes, everyone was constantly accidentally burning their fingers, overconfidently thinking it didn't matter if the glass had cooled yet because you could just avoid that part of the glass, and everyone was focused on the shape and creation, rather than the caution of getting burned which was initially the focus.

So that would be my Occam's Razor, totally uneducated guess, of what may have happened here. Probably have flown through clouds like this so many times, often even in much worse conditions, many years and many flights. And someone with less experience may have been much more cautious. Or maybe it was one of 20 other things like mechanical failure, etc. Just wanted to post something vaguely resembling wisdom in looking at how an experienced pilot could crash a helicopter.

What did Tanguay say?

Within the first 10 minutes of the news, he tweeted something to the effect that Kobe was great on a basketball court, but was a lousy person off the court.

It was something that is fine to express well after a tragedy. But within the first minutes of news of someone dying in a crash, it's something no mature adult does.

The comments on his twitter - - mostly from people who are fans of Tanguay were uniformly of the "Gary, delete that now, for the love of your carreer, PLEASE!" and "Gary, what are you doing???" variety.

He has a recent record of this type of "look at me" stupidity, so I wasn't surprised to see it as it came across the general twitter feed of reactions to the news yesterday. He used to be a straight up sports guy and then the suits at NBCBoston got to him the very same way they got to Curran - - it's like they sent their personnel to a re-education training camp to change their social media personas. Curran has gone "half you-know what" but Tanguay has gone "full you know what".

Tanguay has chosen the career path of being a contrarian, shock-jock. Sometimes when those types go into that mode they lose their humanity.

To your point he used to be a decent broadcaster. Now he is a loser.

Being from LA, when I heard the news, the first thing that came to my mind was, God told Kobe this morning that LA is a city that does not allow two kings being alive at the same time, giving that Leborn just passed Kobe in scoring the night before....tragic.

This is really the last thing America needs, Kobe worked so hard and dedicated his life to his craft, so that he can be in control in the most uncontrollable situation on the court, in the most pressure packed moments. Yet, his death is everything but, and only further instils the thought of how everything is out of one's control for everyday average Joe.

Horrific news, I respected the hell out of his basketball skills. RIP Black Mamba.

What did Tanguay tweet?

just started out stupid. Basically “although I didn’t condone his actions off the court”

Just very insensitive, dehumanized. not the time or place for personal opinions.

IIRC it was on a Bill Simmons podcast/interview with Larry in which he said something like, "If you want to have fun you play with LeBron. If you want to win you play with Kobe."

A Parable inspired by hellolin (melody stolen from We 3 Kings, mods feel free to delete or ban me if necessary)

We 2 kings of Los Angeles are
Jumping, dunking over cars

Only one can be a star.

My recollections of Tanguay dating back to as far as 2005-2006 was that he was always trying to be the next big contrarian reporter. I cannot remember a time that I found him tolerable or insightful. He just got worse and worse and went off the rails to irrelevance to the point where he needs to tweet something like that for attention. It’s like he needs to remind people of his existence.

I remember when he did midday sports on WBZ.

I felt more informed after watching this.

I don't find myself saying this all that often with "dramatic/traumatic" events but what a great amount of detail he had.

We had a woman off her meds try to "break into" our house last Xmas morning (Xmas 2018) and I was literally looking at her through my Ring doorbell while on the phone with dispatch and the description I gave was quite different than the reality of the situation. I guess I don't have that "3 o'clock in the morning clarity" gene.

Thx, RW. Black box will clarify eyewitness accounts. Other accounts have the helicopter going 180 mph into the hillside.
