Freedom of speech allows us freedom to criticize our government without reprisals. It has nothing to do with spewing stuff on a private website.

He acknowledged in another thread now that he’s a neo-Nazi. Look, I love this forum and am all about allowing people to give their opinion, even if it’s very much in contrast to mine, but there’s a reason why a handful of civilized countries make neo-Nazi writings an actual crime. I know I speak for myself in saying I would not be comfortable on a forum that allows members to write posts like that. Thanks for your acknowledgment and doing that you can, and I’ll wait for @Ian to respond on this one.

I really was hoping he would respond and say something along the lines that he was replying directly to the initial Hitler post and being snarky but took it too far.

As a forum member for almost 14 years, I’ve never wished to see another permanently banned and have only reported posts a couple of times when I thought they were bordering on very offensive hate speech, but I’ve merely requested removal of the posts because generally I believe people are decent and political correctness goes too far, but there is something very ugly and disturbing to have a forum member be here who has posted something like this. Thanks for reading. I really dislike blowing the whistle on free speech and political correctness...but you also have to weigh that with what you feel should be universal lines of decency. Promoting genocide crosses those lines. The Jews are not the only ethnic group to have been persecuted to such an evil level...other horrible things in history, of which promoting their idea are equally deserving of scorn and banishment.

Thanks for taking this seriously, and I’d like to reiterate that that this poster should be permanently banned (by whoever has the authority to do so.). And I think I speak not just for myself on this one.

Thanks for that ...
If he makes a post on the site about anything I will delete it and block him
from that thread. When Ian decides a course of action I will follow it as always ...

Was horrendous what he posted ... then he tried to justify it and it was abhorrent.
He's free to have his beliefs ... but they will not be allowed on this site.
The internet has enhanced ugly in the world. There are ugly sites for people like him ...

Amen. All too often it is lost on people that Freedom of Speech doesn't mean they are free from all consequence. Obviously we live in an age that has seen common sense become an oxymoron but a little decorum and some semblance of propriety shouldn't be too much to reasonably expect

Exactly. While I think overall the offensesensitivity in this country has gotten way out of control, the posts that @Ice_Ice_Brady has called out go way way beyond garbage like “microaggressions”, etc. If I had a party and caught someone saying stuff like that I’d tell them to leave immediately. I would expect the mods to do the same here. Especially when the poster embraces it and is unrepentant.

Agreed. I came of age in a time where 'get over yourself' and 'lighten up' were the order of the day, where taking offense where none was intended was considered by far the greater sin. In many ways I remain an unenlightened Cro Magnon and find it challenging to properly navigate the minefields of today's heightened sensitivity levels without setting off more than a few of them myself. That said, some things just so obviously go beyond the pale of what should be routine sensibility that it's difficult to fathom the thought process behind espousing them anywhere, never mind typing them out and clicking 'Post Reply' here on a football forum.

Point being, it's not exactly next level stuff to not sh!t where you eat

My father acquired an old Nazi radio box with the swastika emblem on it. He kept it and now I have it as a powerful reminder of how powerful and damaging propaganda or controlled speech can be.

I lived in Germany for eight years and spoke with many old timers at the local guest houses. A couple of them were WWII veterans.

One of the veterans served under Rommel in North Africa. He mentioned the constant spewing of antisemitism over the radio and through the papers which raised Jewish hatred to extreme levels. He said that it wasn't until he was outside of Germany when he heard the other side of the story. He and many others began to question Germany's reality. He ended up in a German prison camp in Georgia IIRC, which I hadn't known existed prior to that conversation. He wanted to stay in the US after the war but was sent home.

Side note, many old Germans expressed how they had become prisoners in their own country. One old lady told me of the day she first saw an American soldier ( die Armies) . The soldier tried to offer her and others food while they were waiting in the bread line. She refused out of fear that the SS would punish her if she took it.

Another guy was an artist who had fought in Stalingrad. He was teaching a German lady I was dating at the time how to paint portraits. He said he had only survived Stalingrad because his leaders wanted him to take portraits of themselves back to their families which he spent the rest of his life trying to do. He still had twenty or so left and they were eerily beautiful. ( Not sure how to describe something that was incredibly well done but also represented a dark part of history and of someone who knew he was going to die and probably no longer believed in what he was fighting for.)

Lastly I visited one of the best preserved concentration camps in Poland a few years ago. Majdanek in Lublin. It's an incredibly powerful place. Just standing there will bring tears to your eyes. The Memorial Urn is unbelievable. Written on the Urn was " Let our past be a warning to you" .

Banning or controlling speech is never a good thing. I hate where this country is headed by the way. We truly have forgotten how valuable free speech is. So I respectfully disagree with your sentiment.

One of the true lessons of the Holocaust is that Hitler fed off of an existing camp fire of antisemitism and through controlled speech turned it into a bon fire and then an inferno of hate.

I greatly respect your viewpoint Tony.

As others have pointed out, free speech isn’t something an online forum like this guaranteed to preserve. There are plenty of other outlets for gullible, yet dangerous, fools to espouse poisonous claims that were debunked over 100 years ago.

You certainly cannot reason with someone like the person who posted these messages. Like you, I can empathize with regular German men and women in the 1930s and 1940s who, as you explained eloquently, were basically born into this culture or brainwashed through propaganda and controlling the press. That’s a scary thing.

It’s particularly disgusting, in that sense, that one could live in the United Stated in the modern age of information with historical perspective, yet still choose to believe in, and promote, such hateful things. In other words, I understand the reason why many otherwise decent people were corrupted and became Nazis. But what’s the excuse of this jackass spewing it on a football board in 2020? There is no excuse.

I think a statement here that certain things are not tolerable on a private website that does have standards of decency is a lot stronger than a statement that “freedom of speech” reigns supreme, even on a message board that has terms and conditions including what behavior is tolerated. A very, very, very low bar is required to be a forum member.

I do not support anti-free speech laws in the country writ large and believe everyone, including neo-Nazis, have the right to freedom of speech and freedom of press. But this is a message board, in the same sense @QuantumMechanic compared it to making someone leave a private party that he’s hosting because he has house rules and this is a violation. Whatever the mods decide, I’m not going to make a stink about it.

I do and will continue to support the right of even neo-Nazis to publish their hateful books, pamphlets, etc. and to go out and have their private and public rallies. But I also do and will continue to believe they are disgusting, evil people, and I will not knowingly associate with them nor will allow them in any real or virtual space I control.

Thanks. Quantum's analogy is a good one. I respect your opinion too and understand why you threw out the red flag.

Obviously there has to be a line. Where to draw it is a difficult discussion in itself.

I'll just stick to discussing the Red Sox in the football forum. That should keep everyone happy.:D

All good Tony. Glad to get your opinion on this. The discussion is about banning/ censoring is a valid one. I don’t hold it against anyone if they don’t agree with me about what measures should be taken here. The important thing is the unity in denouncing the poster’s message.

I enjoy Suits. It's basically Mad Men with lawyers instead of ad men and is set in modern times instead of the 60's. That reminds me, I still haven't seen season #9 yet.

Well described. Markle's character was a pretty likable character, all in all.

Still a decent show but haven't watched much of it in the last few seasons. Several things just made it less like the origin of the show. Mike was discovered a fraud and went to jail, it was just too difficult for me to believe he was a lawyer 12 months later(should have kept him as a private investigator). They also were forced to tone down the "offensive" nature of the comedy/drama based on a previous episode where Donna pretended to be giving a BJ at the office to disguise shady lawyer-ing. But ultimately, IMHO, the biggest mistake for the show was making Harvey (who was like the Sean Connery James Bond of the lawyer world) be less....Harvey :).
(for another good show that few know of, check out a show called The Last Kingdom on Netflix -- if you like the Viking/Medieval thing).
(man I hate the offseason :) )

If you'll take the time you'll notice I ALWAYS like or "winner" Tony's posts...the reason is I'd have to be pretty frickin' stupid to get his aunts, Moose and Roccolina, mad at me for any reason.

now as far as this thread goes, I feared it was going to be scatological in nature, referring to a recent trip Giselle and Tom took to San Francisco. I'm quite relieved.

Thanks for posting that Ice. Agreed, I would definitely not be on this board if Neo-Nazis spewed their ******** freely. I have seen other posters post links to white-supremacist websites too, that poster isn't the only one. This is why we have moderators (for people who are questioning it on the other thread).

There is one funny thing about that image you posted, which is that if you read DarrylS's post immediately below the Nazi post, it looks like he is responding to it by saying "This seems to be another veiled attempt to criticize drafting Harry". Gave me a chuckle.

Thanks TB. It’s really great to have so many highly respected posters chime in with support on this issue. I mean, I don’t think there are a lot of nazis here, but speaking up about it means a lot to me.

I didn’t notice that post but is is funny :)

People who didn’t visit this thread are totally unaware that like 90% of it is about a neo-Nazi post that spontaneously appeared. They’re probably looking at the number of responses to “On no! Gisele dumps Tom!” and thinking we are all total idiots who read tabloids and take them seriously.

I never would have thought that poster was an actual Nazi, I recognize his handle and don't remember him ever saying anything controversial. I just looked at some of his posts, they are almost all football and generally reasonable.

These two are interesting and neither sounds like a Nazi. Almost wonder if his account got hacked or something.

You shouldnt clown another persons genetics

^^I think in reference to people making fun of Suggs

With my addiction there was always a phase where after I relasped you were in the right mind and that was when you had to make crucial decisions such as cutting out certain people, certain things that triggered me to relapse etc. Also I had to find a driving force of motivation and I had another underlying problem to conquer before hand that made my addiction even worse. It was ****ing tough, I thought it would be impossible but I realized that at the end of day the decision was in my hand and I had to finally succumb and cut out all triggers in my life and follow a strict productive schedule.

I'm not saying I dont feel bad for him, in terms of "**** him" I meant I dont feel bad in terms of the fact that he lost his career. If he wanted it enough he wouldve done everything possible.

From what I went through and what ive heard from other addicts, you just need to find that driving force that will push you to take the necessary steps and precautions to quit and with Gordon maybe football just wasnt that force for him.

Sorry if I offended any other addicts.

I'll have to give The Last Kingdom a try. I enjoy that type of genre though my wife hates it. It took me a couple years to get her to give Game of Thrones a try and she didn't like it.

One Netflix show that I just discovered is Billy in the Street. I don't know of another show that's as funny.

I see a funny comeback to something you said in this post but I can't because it will trigger political reactions.

Me and Gisele are dating now

The Last Kingdom is awesome. Unfortunately they're only coming out with one more season. It was interesting to try to tie both the Vikings and Last Kingdom's characters together chronologically.
