La Canfora: Brady unlikely to sign extension, will test free agency

Why can't Patriots wait? The media acts like bill wont wait because he's missing out on paying Fitzpatrick or tanehill 20 million a year.

It's abit different than talking about gronk where the top TEs are reasonable in price and talented.

The options after Brady are trash that requires high $$

If Brady leaves hes going with stidham and a cheap backup. Hes not spending 20million on journeyman trash
Do you think BB has anything to do with these opinions? Every day it's a slightly different tune for clicks. They are selling us theories and the NFL must be loving the attention this will garner until mid March. It's all a show.

Timely stuff.

PS, you'll be hearing more and more about him, he's like Frederick Douglas that way.

I’ve said it for Months Stidham Mariota and a rookie
Leaning towards Eason or Love.
I'm thinking the same thing, but I'm curious what it'll cost - both to pay Mariota and to draft someone like Love. Will they need to trade up into the second for Love? Will Mariota cost in excess of $10m?

Mariota I’m thinking can be had for like 2 year deal first year prove it deal second year player option?
I’ve heard Oregon fans say they would love to see what McDaniels can do with him.
If anything he helps us prepare better for the new breed of QBs.

The allure of love is enticing because he has some Mahomes to his game and if you can develop into 3/4s of that it’s damn right sexy.
However I think if he’s sitting there at 23 it could be Herbert.
He has the height that BB loves he’s a high character guy loved by his team mates has a big arm and is mobile.
He reminds of a Blake Bortles coming out who BB had as his number 1 QB.

As far as Fromm it scares me for 2 reasons one I can’t help but think of Tom Brady when I read about the kid.
However I think he’s more AJ Feely
Or Ken Dorsey.
So I’m scared if we take him he’s a career clip holder.
If we don’t we see some team get the next Brady.

To get Love, they need to trade up into the FIRST round to get him. He's turning heads at the Senior Bowl and his stock is quickly rising...could be gone in the top 15 picks.

Yeah I don't dislike Mariota's talent if he can be had for a reasonable price. Thankfully it seems like the QB market is kind of flooded and also top-heavy so I can see him being had for a team-friendly cost. A 2-year deal makes sense to me too. I know they were curious about Tebow (McDaniels drafted him, even) and there's some overlap with Mariota in skillset, but Mariota is NFL caliber.

I like Fromm but I agree that I'm unsure if I just like him because he makes me think of Brady.

Love is probably my favorite guy that isn't out-of-reach and isn't Fromm - though I don't know if I want to spend pick 23 on him or not if they are also signing Mariota. He could be a bust but he's got talent... He would probably need to be taken in the first if his stock rises more.

Another intriguing thought I had - what if the Niners return the favor to the Pats and send over Nick Mullens for a reasonable price? A 3rd and a 4th? Maybe a future 2nd?

Yeah could certainly see that. I know initially he was a slightly lower projection in the second but his talent can definitely elevate that stock. I haven't been following the senior bowl. I suppose I shouldn't over-value the 1st - if you can get a possible franchise QB down near 20 that's still pretty good even if he doesn't pan out - many firsts flame out anyway, and some others are just Michel-types who are kinda good but not major difference-makers.

I don't know enough about Mullins
It concerns me tbough that Shanahans system is so good for QBs.
He makes really good QBs look like superstars Jimmy G.
And presumed Jags Mullins look like a decent stop gap.
Everywhere he's been he's gotten more from his QBs.
Brilliant offensive mind and seems like could be the top coach when BB hangs the whistle for good.

Just a quick thought how fun will it be when BBs Son coaches against Kyle Shanahan.
The greatness from both men live on.

It’s not just the QB position though. Ok, they set aside 20m in cap space for Brady and if he leaves, they find some cheap career backup journeyman (3m in cap space?) to compete with Stidham. But what happens with the other 17m in cap space if Brady makes his decision on 3/28, 10 days after free agency starts? The impact players at other positions who they could spend that 17m on have already signed elsewhere. It’s a holistic team issue.

100 percent accurate this is what it's all about the other 52.
Belichick will not allow any player even Tom to handcuff him with the roster.

Yeah that's my point in the opening post. IMO if they don't already have a deal pretty much done before his contract voids, they'll be moving on. Maybe even sooner than that, since the whole roster-building mindset will be different with no Brady. They'll probably want at least a few days to look at the upcoming legal tampering period/list of free agents from the POV of "who do we want on a team helmed by Stidham and/or a dude like Mariota or Dalton" vs. "who can we squeeze in after we sign Brady."

On a side note Derek Carr is PISSED about the Brady to Vegas rumors.
It makes all the sense if Tom wants to market himself on a huge stage.
I have also been thinking maybe Tom wants to prove he can win a Superbowl without Bill.
If Tom wins a Superbowl with say the Chargers or Raiders he will do more for his legacy then winning his 7th with us.

I can't see Brady and Gruden working well together at all.

As a analyst Gruden always gushed about Brady.
Plus whos better to be the face of the Vegas football team?
Jameis Winston?
Derek Carr? Lmao
Tannenhill?
No they will write Tom a blank check as they should.

If Brady is going to test free agency, the 15million cap hit will limit the overall free cap Patriots will have to play with....

Mariota is probably looking at a Tannehill-like deal. Tannehill's contract last year was $7m base with $5m incentives; figure a little inflation because of a higher cap.

No problems with that deal, though an option for a second year would be nice too.

Anyone actually think getting a 2nd/3rd/4th tier QB will really get the Patriots into the SB ?

I'd just throw Stidham into the games and see if he floats or sinks.

Of course draft another QB....

My suspicion is they will bring back Brissett via trade.

Couple things.

1) I'll believe he's gone when he's gone, but that don't mean the contingency plans aren't being readied. Of course they are.

2) I don't know enough contract stuff to think I can be right about this, so I won't try... but what little I know says yeaahhhhhh this is the most gone he's ever been. (although we're comparing to "not gone at all," so there's that.)

3) My guess is that guys looking at draft binkies and saying "who will be there at 23" are playing the minority of available scenarios in the probability histogram. You might have a spike at "draft early quarterback." But "Draft quarterback you've rarely if ever heard anything about in a round other than round 1" seems more likely. Of course that doesn't comport with the draftnik mindset. That said, it's way early and people we think are our 1st round QB binkies on here might be third rounders by then.

4) I always thought it was dumb to have "my other team I like" but I sort of get it since the Pats have spawned so many starting QBs. Generally they've eventually flopped, but my "other" team right now, since the Pats are out of it, is the 49ers. No, it's not anywhere near as important that they win as it would be if it were the Pats, but it would be good to see Jimmy G make good. I'd feel the same about Brady wherever he landed, if, you know.
