La Canfora: Brady unlikely to sign extension, will test free agency

As far as I’m concerned as soon as they traded Jimmy they should’ve given Brady an extension through 2020. At that point they showed him were committed to him for the future as we traded his successor and he’s happy. Since he’s happy he’s willing to continue not trying to break the bank and we lock him up for 3 more years with modest QB rates before Wilson, Cousins, or Rodgers really drove the numbers up. At that point there shouldn’t have been a ton of apprehension on the team’s side coming off a Super Bowl win and midway through an MVP season.

If Tom goes to LA and takes Edelman and Gronk with him, the Chargers are winning the SB...
Edelman still is under contract. Gronk is beyond done.

My gut tells me that the Pats don't give him a great offer and he won't be back (maybe it's just my fear, but that's what I expect right now).

BB goes with Stidham next year.

The most logical landing place for Brady, to me, is with the Chargers. They need to put fans in seats desperately, and in a huge market area (with lots of Pats fans, i might add). If I were running the Chargers, I'd go after him hard - I'd trade/overpay for JE (another California kid who's out here in South Bay every year) if that's what he wanted. Heck, I'd trade for Gronk's rights and go after McDaniels if that's what he wanted.

The Chargers are in a desperate situation and they need to do something drastic.

If he goes with stidham he better get him some wideouts. When you have a young QB you want to make it as comfortable as possible to succeed.

There were reports the one year contract was considered mutually beneficial. Who knows what's going through Brady's head, but this year to year contract game does not seem like a good thing to continue.

I'm in the column that a 1 year 2019 contract was a mistake for the NEP. Shoulda offered a 2. Would TFB have taken a 2? Maybe he said no to a 2 wanting a 3 or a shot at FA. Dunno.
The conundrum is that the Pats have zero* chance signing Brady this year to another one year contract. Sombody(s) will offer him 2 year contracts.

* OK, I lied. In the universe where he gets no alternative offer that Giselle is on board with, he stays a NEP for another one year contract

I ain't lookin' too hard at the contracts, that's what you capologist types are for. The moment "everybody says" that you can't do X, Y, and Z all at the same time, the surest way to look like a fool is agree, without diving deep into those details. Proclaiming "can't be done" when there's a stack of clauses you haven't read strikes me as foolish.

Yeah. If only there was someone knowledgeable in those deep details who was analytical and whom we could trust to be agenda free who could analyze this for us...

Assuming that free agency wasn't Brady's plan all along.

The problem is we don't really know the priors here. There's a lot of speculation and hazy reports, but most of them are contradictory.

I’m gonna go ahead and guarantee that whoever is under center will have upgrades at both Wr and TE

Yeah my post was working under the assumption that both sides wanted to stay with each other as recently as two seasons ago. If Brady has wanted to branch out and test the waters outside of New England all along then that’s a whole different story.

Yes, I realize that about Edelman. I meant the Chargers trading for him. And Gronk has plenty of time to get back into football shape between now and September.

I could see Edelman joining Brady with either the Raiders or Chargers.

Nobody knows what TB is gonna do.
But of all the media speculation, the 2 who are closest to TB and the Patriots and who have the most credibility are Reiss and Bruschi.
Both believe Tom will play for the Patriots. So does Willie McGinest.
Those 3 have more credibility than the entire local and national media combined.
Doesn't mean Tom is coming back. But logic dictates that it's the most likely outcome.

I brought it up a month ago and I was roasted viciously.
That we would let Edelman go for say a third or fourth.

I don't know what's less likely: another team valuing Edelman that high, or the Patriots valuing him that low.

I think that depends on 2 things if BB or Kraft get their way between the 2 and for Brady to cone back they will have to pay more than what BB is comfortable with.
I don’t see BB Bending nor Kraft getting into that power struggle

If Brady goes, I dont see why the Pats would hang onto a 33 year old Edelman

Because he remains one of the 10 or so best wide receivers in football, and there's no one on the roster or in free agency who could replace him, let alone at his bargain basement cap number? If Brady and Edelman both go, the only seasoned receiver on the roster is Mohamed Sanu, who is definitely better than he played last season, but is still not a guy you're looking to build a receiving corps around.

Chris thats pure speculation. You have no idea what BB wants. BB and TB have a great relationship. I've never seen anything from a single credible media member who's said otherwise.
Stop reading/ listening to the clowns.
