La Canfora: Brady unlikely to sign extension, will test free agency

You assume Brady's first choice is to come back to play in NE. We don't know what he's thinking. If the Pats offer him a generous contract, and he says no, it's Brady getting rid of NE, not the other way around.
The Patriots probably will not make an offer to Brady. Their idea of a fair offer would be
$25 mil minus the cap money already on the books. This would amount to $18.5 mil. tops.
They might add a lot of not likely to be earned incentives and then switch to a running
offense which would limit his chances of making them.

Nah, we've collectively felt this way about LaCanfora for a long time. If this report was coming from Schefter or Rappoport it would be treated differently. That said - I believe most posters in this thread have still discussed the topic in earnest with a "take with a grain of salt" caveat.

I can't see Brady going to Oakland...but it's looking likely Tom is coming back here.

Why do you say it’s looking likely he is coming back?

I can't believe they are airing a segment on ESPN on whether Mahomes is the greatest of all time  . Not even a mention of Brady.

Time will tell but these "journalists" use hype to attract viewers. I remember the non stop ball washing of Rogers a few years back when only "he could make that pass"

Why Did the Patriots ever do that deal and give up franchising rights? Out of respect?
He probably requested it and they granted his request out of respect. They might also have seen it as giving them an out if they're thinking of parting ways. Also, it's hard to imagine the Patriots franchising him which would mean they reached an impasse and would be keeping him against his wishes.

Surprised so many Pats fans on Twitter excited about Mariota possibly coming here. Have they actually watched the guy play lol? I think he has potential, but he needs a lot of work.

I’m thinking it’s Stidham and then drafting one or 2 guys

This is one big game of chicken. BB is not going to waste this defense and roll with some unknown commodity. They are built to beat KC on defense, that's a good start. If someone like Drew become available I could see it except that it will cost way more than Brady to get him unless he changes his stance on maxing out almost every contract.

Cam Newton would be an interesting option. He's 30, but I don't know if he fits into our offense.

The NFL and the Raiders need to the team to become a cultural phenom, like the Cowboys and Packers. They need the clothing sales with "Vegas" on the jerseys to become like the Yankees hats - not really about baseball, but about a way to have a positive ego association with the city. It isn't a big enough Metro region to create a normal fanbase out of the dust (there's nothing normal about Las Vegas).

Having Brady go there, the opening of the new state of the art stadium, the crazy charisma of Gruden, is a formula for a successful launch. I can see Goodell quietly doing what he can to make this happen. If I were essentially the CEO of the NFL, that's what I'd be doing.

Why would Brady test free agency? He has AJ Green and a slew of other great receivers. We are taking Jason La Confora’s “reports” as truth, right?

As the saying goes, it's easier to learn than to un-learn, so starting with someone new to our system is better than bringing in a vet that has already been brought up in someone else's system. Newton is past his prime physically and mentally and Mariotta just got outplayed by Tannehill. Doubt any other vets tick the boxes. I'm dubious about Bridgewater and Rivers too. Too expensive for the value provided, IMO.

Personally I think they find a way to get TB12 back on board, or go with someone young and unproven. The middle ground of bringing in a vet seems to solve no problems. If you want to keep the band together, do what it takes to get TB12 back. If you want to reboot, go with a young player and forget about paying the money a vet QB would want.

Personally, after six rings I'm fine with a reboot, in Bill I trust. I think TB12 going to another team will be sad but IMO he is past peak and I'm OK with restarting with a young QB. The league is finally seeing the value in a highly mobile QB and the league rules protect the QB so much that such QBs aren't likely to get wiped out like Cam or RG3 did.

It might take a mini-tank season or two with TB12 moving on this off season, a lot of other expensive vets being cut, new middle class vets being brought in, Stidham being given a year to sink or swim, and a full reevaluation this time next year with a clean salary cap and more draft picks available.

In fact I think that would be more enjoyable (if less successful in the short term) than a rerun of this season, which IMO is what we should be expecting if they bring TB12 back.

What are the thoughts on Taysom Hill?
I read one report who suggested BB would happily give up pick 23 and give him big money.
Would be quite a gamble.
One that could net exciting results.
However if this is the train of thought it be tough not to just sign Mariota.

My own personal skepticism about the player aside...

I doubt there is a soul alive (at least in the media) to whom Belichick would confide in being "happy" about hypothetical trades.
