Tanguay: Brady “embarrassed” by his compensation, is leaving

If you’re the Jets with $65m in cap space do you take a shot? They both love NYC.

Of course, it’s the Jets.

Guess it depends how you feel about Darnold. I thought he was promising his rookie season, last year was weird so not sure I'd read too much into it. God, seeing Brady play for the Jets would be devastating.

As an aside, here: the Pats were OK with giving him the unrestricted ability to reach FA. What I'm wondering is what they feel they got (other than salary cap relief in 2019) in giving him a deal that, in retrospect, appears so one-sided.

I thought it was reported that the structure was at Brady's request. Which is why I find the money stuff specious. If Brady's sick of New England, or even if he's not and simply wants the flexibility to possibly go elsewhere, I doubt it really has anything to do with money or his contract showing a "lack of respect" and has to do with some combination of other stuff we can speculate on (Belichick, TB12, sick of the cold, whatever). Lack of respect might be one of those but it's more likely it springs from the Garoppolo incident or whatever than from contract stuff.

If we can’t successfully replace Tom with a very good QB
BB was absolutely right to of wanted to keep Jimmy long term over Tom.

They did win two Super Bowls after trading him and come within a hair's breadth of winning a third (or did they trade him the Eagles year, I forget). I mean, there's no guarantee Jimmy doesn't win those too of course (especially last year's offensive crapfest, though refer to the rest of the playoffs) but trying to do counterfactuals will drive everyone nuts. Yes, moving forward from today you'd probably want Jimmy, but that's not what was on the table. Who knows if it was the right choice, but it's hardly worked out badly.

Part of his legacy, he believes, could be tied to seeing future generations embrace the TB12 training and lifestyle regimen that Brady strongly believes has helped him play so long at such a high level.
You know, I could totally believe that’s a non-trivial negative for Belichick with respect to re-signing Brady.

Haha, BB would be so pissed if he had to deal with Alex Guerrero for another 15 years.

I suspect if you gave Belichick truth serum he'd probably call Brady a quack and say Garoppolo would have accomplished more or less the same thing as he did since he was traded. I'm not even sure I'd agree with it (the Jimmy part) but I think Belichick believes that. Just based on a deep reading between lines. But I could also be totally off-base.

I think he has incredibly deep respect for Brady; for one thing, I think Belichick understands just how hard it is in today's sports world to stay grounded and coachable as a mega celebrity. In terms of the "quack" stuff, I think Belichick may believe that; at the same time, I think it's only bothered Belichick insofar as it's caused power challenges the Patriots own training team, which is run by Belichick himself. It's hard to call someone a quack, though, when what they're doing is working for them. Thing is, Belichick is working with a lot of guys who need to grow muscle be powerful, not be lean and pliable. Maybe Guerrero has uncovered a great approach to quarterbacks, pitchers, etc. The problem is that the TB12 method seems like a big reach for guys like Gronkowski, or a linebacker or linemen, or even most receivers. Their job is to be fast, quick, and powerful. Brady's job is stay absorb hits by much bigger players and have great body flexibility.

No it kinda really doesn’t because you’re just casually assuming we win those 2 Super Bowls with Jimmy.

For all practical purposes, they committed to not keeping Garoppolo when they extended Brady after SB49.

Sure, everyone is very well aware of this trade-off, but I'm curious if you felt the same way in 2017. The "if we can't successfully replace Tom with a very good QB" was built in as part of that risk and should have been the much more probable outcome. It was Brady for a few more years in his prime or Jimmy G. long-term. Jimmy G. was the obvious answer unless the other guy was greatest NFL player of all-time and maybe the most popular player or a region of all-time, and both players timelines had a head-on collision. Kraft overruled Belichick for the fans, not for the team's long-term success. And I don't blame him.

This is BEYOND stupid. REALLY Chris????? You are telling me that you'd rather trade THREE Superbowl appearances (with 2 wins), for 3 questionable years with Jimmy????? That's absurd and truly a classic 20-20 hindsight exemplar.

Keeping JG and dumping TB in 2016 was NEVER an option and to opine that this is what BB wanted or thought was best for his team just plays into the rampant hawt takes that seem to be ruining this board.

As to Tanguay's comments, you and I BOTH have better sources inside the Pats organization than Gary Tanguay. He's an idiot, though I'm glad his cancer thing is working out OK so far.

My friend Who is a big sports gambler is telling me Brady to Vegas with Gruden is what he’s betting on.
A great place to build his TB12 empire

It’s such a tough scenario I’m a big believer that I would give up super bowl victory’s as crazy as that sounds to ensure a chance to go to a super bowl every year and compete vs possibly having a span of 10 seasons where we don’t have a top 10 QB.

I have to imagine that if Brady had ever wanted top dollar for the past 20 years, Kraft would've obliged with a smile and still be grateful and happy about it.

I think that’s an easy decision. TOM BRADY is what complicates it.

If you go back to 2014, BB admitted that Brady's age/future was a consideration in drafting Garoppolo (not to mention that Garoppolo at 62 was a steal). And in that KC loss in 2014 you could see one of the things that was concerning to BB: once Brady dropped back to pass, he would not run.

So I think the Patriots saw it in one of two ways: either Brady would decline and Jimmy would take over, or Jimmy rejuvenates Brady. We all know what happened, and moving on from Brady was difficult after SB49, and all but impossible after 28–3.

Need to wait till after March 18 passes (cap hit on Brady contract) before it is a foregone conclusion on Brady not resigning.

My 2cents is that he won't. It is his choice.

Will BillB sign a TEMP-QB so that Stidham can grow? Or Stidham start.

2020 draft, BillB will get a QB as well, IMO.

Spoken as the fan of a team that has won 6 SB in 20 years
