OT a question I’ve had for a long time (NCAAF)

I’ve often wondered what the answer to my question is :

How far back do you need to go for today’s best college teams to beat NFL teams ? If you need me to be specific : one of tonight’s teams - LSU/Clemson is the competition. How far back in time do we need to go for one of them to be a winner in the NFL ? Would LSU beat 1970s teams ? 1960s ?

I don’t mean “a fluke win vs the worst ever NFL team”. I mean “LSU would be a competitive team” in the League.

I would say maybe the 1940's......

Correct me if I'm wrong...didn't college all stars play the Super Bowl champs back in the early 70s???????
Usually SB champs won but I'm not sure....

Using this, one could safely assume that today’s teams are much, much stronger than that college program from 1963... yes ?

So are the pros... I would still take the pros every day..This will never happen again as I can't envision agents letting their clients participate in this....

And that was a college ALL STAR game...meaning a bunch of likely NFL rookies....

Most top ranked FBS college teams have maybe a maximum of 7-8 NFL bound guys out of 100 players....

Yes

Every year Pros vs College. It was more of a welcome to the big leagues pro bowl type game and not blood and guts hard hitting like the NFL. There were no lawsuits and beeching and complaining back then. No babies.

not in my lifetime, and I'm 57

I suppose that once you go back to era completely devoid of modern training and nutrition methods (50s?) and when the NFL wasn't high-paying and sometimes even college stars would opt for a different career, you might see today's college workout warriors be competitive, based solely on size, strength, and speed. Still a huge know-how deficit, though.

do drugs count? i would have said 80s, (that's 40 years ago btw) but then i think of the juiced up 70s steelers and....probably not

Yes. The pros are better now. The question is : would Clemson beat the 15th best NFL team from 1973 ? As constituted back then. The college kids would be bigger. Maybe faster. Maybe with more innovative coaches.
