Numerous Personnel Mistakes since the off season

The Patriots had the best defense in the league. Period. Some of it was helped by an easy schedule but they were not the only team to play bad teams. Did not claim that were an all-time defense and they did have some poor games but in the year 2019 they were the best defense in the NFL by pretty much any measurement. Which defense was better?

Whoever scouted and drafted harry needs to be fired. Has to slow way down when coming out of a break. If he was an udfa playing like that, he'd be cut and no one would sign him.

So many good wrs, you'd almost have to try and draft one this bad. Msybe the jets did some kind on inception like jedi mind trick on belichick?

I wonder if cajuste will ever play again. Another losing bet they made.

The sneaky personnel mistake was relying on Mike Pennell as their NT heading into camp. This guy was supposed to be a tough, physical run stuffer, and he looked uninterested in even being here.

No guarantee that the Patriots beat Tennessee if we had something better than Wise in our DL rotation, but he got bullied all game. The run defense failed us just as badly as the offense.

I get that we allowed 180 yards but I still don't think I can really point the finger at the defense for that loss. They allowed 14 points. Our offensive ineptness in all but a few games here or there is what really cost us this year.

Lowballing Humphries, Beasley, Jared Cook, etc. Leaving the cupboard bare at WR, and wasting TWO roster spots at the position with Meyers and Gunner. Not addressing the TE position. Not drafting Chung’s replacement, which cost us on at least two game changing plays. Straying from screens to White. There are lots more.

Unfortunately, this year’s team wasn’t very good despite a very misleading 12-4 record. They lost to 4/5 of the AFC playoff teams. They also lost to Miami at home in a must-win setting.

So you know what their offers were to Humphries, Beasley and Cook? I’m impressed. You must have great sources, Volin-level.

Their final offer to Humphries was more than most on this board wanted to spend on him, so how exactly does that make their initial offer a low-ball offer? They were aggressive with him but he had good instincts about Brady.

We don’t really know what they offered Beasley, only that they were one of three finalists.

With Cook, there is good evidence that Gronk, by (intentionally) dragging his feet and delaying his announcement, hurt their chances to sign him. You are making up this “low-ball” offer crap.

Not a single TE drafted this year made a major impact. That is a fact.

They swung and missed on some key free agents, and that is a fact that deserves discussion in a thread dedicated to the topic.

Defense played well enough to win. Not getting 7 when they had first and goal at the one was a much bigger issue. That’s not on the defense.

Defense let the team down at the end by not getting the ball back. That said, they held the Titans scoreless in the 2nd half and that should have been enough to win the game.

The replacement FB got hurt. The replacement center was adequate. They didn’t even have a replacement level TE.

We talking the same defense that got shredded by Ryan friggin Fitzpatrick to basically end the season?! Overrated and highly mediocre with losses to any good teams (KC,BAL,HOU,TEN). If the Pats weren't in the laughably weak AFCE we wouldn't have made the playoffs.
Keep washing those balls! LMAO.
Lot of good defenses get shredded . Even the 2000 ravens were shredded in a game or two. Also its also very hard to keep the team in contention when all your coordinators and coaches are leaving every year. The fact that this program has sustained over the yrs with various personnel leaving is a testament it works. There are some down yrs which is expected. This yr buffalo was quite good in the AFCE. Also winning a division and getting a bye hasnt mean automatic SB for most teams as evidenced by the playoffs this week. Its actually quite hard to win.
Let me suck like this for 2-3 yrs and we can say the team and concept is done. Just my 2 cents.

They convert the 1st and goal at the 1, it becomes more of a tannehill game and henry gets taken out of the equation. 49ers did the same thing yesterday. There are many reasons we lost the game and all of them came down to one dropped pass or 1 missed yard.

Unfortunately this time unlike 2010 Brady has no time to build another circle of trust with rookie WRs. These receivers' would be fine if we add one proven veteran for instance AJ Green, let Harry step up and give Edelman to rest a bit.
TE position must be adressed as well because we cannot afford to skip this position.

For better or worse, the Patriots do not believe in the notion of a window, even for Brady. As BB has said, winning a championship is hard even when things go right.

Agreed. The notion that backups should be equal to starters is a little off. Their center and fullback backups were OK. Obviously tight end was a huge problem.

A Squirrel in hand...
I guess my point is, I don't feel sympathy for us not being able to get Amendola for any reason because the dude clearly wanted to play here and was sacraficing to be here. It's our fault for not just paying him when we could have and getting him locked up.

Hopefully this year's failures will spur some serious off season activity. It's a reminder of 2006 when the Patriots offensive cupboard was bare. With a loss to the colts because the pats D was sick the week leading up to the game and the offensive was woefully under talented to keep up with the colts (although we were once blown call on a non rule from winning the game). BB loaded the offense up and unleashed Brady on the league.

One could only dream for a Pats 2007, Broncos 2015, or KV type offensive weapons

You can tell the Ball washers on this thread who blame this years offensive travesty on "dems da breaks". Puh-leez. Let me repost my list from another thread:

BB never addressed TE which he's had years to do
BB hasn't drafted a great offensive skill player in well over 10+ years(ok 9!)
BB cheaps out when trying to sign skill players-see Adam Humphries, Manny Sanders etc
BB cheaps out resigning decent players who Brady has connection to- Hello Amendola, Deion
BB lets our stud LT go and has our OL completely dependent on a rookie with an injury history and who has never played the LT position
BB mistakenly drafts below NFL average RB and WR with 1st rd picks
BB drafts OL guys who are injured and/or questionable
BB drafts strange no name DB projects (in RD 2!) who no one has ever heard of
BB drafts weird Navy guys and rugby players for more "fun" projects
BB stacks defense positions 3 or 4 deep and has ex cons, mental cases, broken down geriatrics and addicts for offense
BB lets his idiot son try to run the defense
BB alienates and tries to run the greatest of all time out of town for ego reasons (and cheapness!)

Maybe he just wants to show people like you how he can build a superbowl contender almost every year wirh 3 guys from Dorchester

And yet, we have been the most dominating football team of the last 20 yrs, and perhaps of all-time.

I’ve heard that Mark, Donnie, and Paul are all polished route runners.
