NFL Rumors: Tom Brady Won’t Take Hometown Discount To Stay With Patriots

Looking at Lombardi's unmitigated disaster of a career, smart thing to do is take every personnel analysis he makes and assume the polar opposite is true.

Sean Payton didn't even think he could do it, he started Bridgewater over him and only used him as a gadget player when Bridgewater was playing. He's thrown like twelve passes in his NFL career. Does Lombardi think Johnny Hekker would be a good starting QB too? He's been much more successful as a passer than Hill!
Well so far right about Lamar and maybe on Baker too. We see Hill making the simple plays, but still need to see a lot more to know if he can make reads and the adjustments needed to play the position.

Man I really want Patsfans poster ChrisR347373 in charge of the Patriots. If you can trade Stephon Gilmore straight up for Taysom Hill, you gotta do it.

Subtract Dorsett, add a WR and a TE (say Sanders/Green/Henry/Hooper) to go with Jules Harry and Sanu. You don’t think TB would find that appealing?

I will believe it when I see it Sanu is done and even if they keep him he has to take a HUGE PAY-CUT 1.5 Mill should be his going rate.

You also spent the entire year after Amendola arrived excoriating him as a disappointment who needed to be cut immediately.

I ate my crow on DA and loved it might I have another?? Atleast DA performed in the Playoffs but half of Sanu's number came in the Ravens game. Ever since then his stat lines 1 catch 11 yards.

The thing I'll say about Taysom Hill is on one hand I'm a bit surprised there hasn't been a wave of teams drafting or signing hybrid college QBs with physical tools to play a similar utility role. On the other though Hill's been extremely inefficient as an actual passer over his career and I've always questioned the wisdom of taking Brees out to put him under center and most teams have a back or receiver who can run single-wing formations just fine and throw a relatively accurate pass to an open receiver (see Edelman and Sanu, for instance). Hill's fun to watch and can fill a lot of roles but I'm not sure he fills any of those roles particularly well.

Why would he go to a losing team? Brady has understood for years that it’s about winning not having shiny toys.

Maybe he looks at the lineup and has the confidence that he can improve them. It’s not like they are the Redskins or Bengals without much talent. They were 12-4 and made the playoffs just last year.

Yeah, difference between last year's Chargers and this year's was basically just a downgrade in Rivers' play and Derwin James getting injured. Same roster that went 12-4 otherwise.

That's always been my outsider's perspective on Hill but Saints fans absolutely love him. I even saw calls for him to replace Brees entirely on their forum. I'm sure that's a fringe opinion, but it doesn't seem fringe that Saints fans thought taking Hill off the field late in the game neutered what would have been a game winning drive.

Overall, and as an aside, I saw a staggering amount of Brees hate on their forums today and yesterday. The hometown approval rating for Brees is way lower than that for Brady right now despite what we might have expected given the recent records Brees and his offense broke. There are legitimately calls for him to retire.

I don't think he's getting more than 30 million guaranteed on a 2 year deal from any team. Except maybe Dallas if they want to avoid paying Dak. But other than them I can't see a team that has a ready to win roster overpaying Tom.

Maybe he won't need to take a discount here. Plus I'm assuming that he probably doesn't want his Patriots career with so many highlights to end on such a crappy note. No one wants that. Well except for CHB of course.

Why would Dallas invest in a 43 yr old QB?

If we plan on starting the rebuild this offseason it’s not a terrible idea. We saw what Ramsey fetched.
FYI, team would only gain $3m in cap space with a Gilmore trade as he’d have a $15m dead cap hit.

Not surprised by a loss and not believing in your team are VERY different things. He wasn't surprised because the practices haven't been good. That doesn't mean he doesn't believe in his team mates. It means he saw the team wasn't ready and the offense wasn't where it needed to be.
Right. He wasn't surprised by the loss because he was half-expecting it because the team, and himself (which he's been leaving out apparently), haven't been executing well.

Also, newsflash: no amount of OTA's would have helped. OTA's are worthless when most of the receivers we're around the team until October. OTA's wouldn't have healed Edelman's knee and shoulder.
No, but they could have helped the development of Meyers and Harry and made them at least real options in the passing game.

I used to think that way about Hill, but he’s been awesome this season.

Gonna be mighty difficult to have Sam playing two games at once, in two different cities on Sundays. He was scooped up by DET a while back.
Thank you. I thought he was IRed. They released him I see.

Unless he is offered Chris Conley for Gilmore at the last minute.

Kraft said, “That any person who plays 20 years for this team and helps us get to six Super Bowls, and been really selfless, has earned that right. (...) Anyone who’s done that has earned the right to control his future after 20 years. And you know, my hope and prayer is number one, he play for the Patriots. Or number two, he retires.”

How magnanimous of Kraft to believe that only after 20 years of sacrifices, Brady has earned the right to control his future, but only if he comes back (@discount) or retires.

I wonder if anyone realizes that part of the team's success was Brady signing team-friendly contracts. Brady's deals also influenced other players to do the same. What do you think happens to that "team friendly" culture when the #1 team friendly guy bails over a few million?

Those 6 SB have reaped huge rewards for Brady beyond his paycheck. You think anyone would give a flip about TB12 if he had 1 ring or had not won one since 2004. Or selling Aston-Martins? You want the Pats to overpay his value to keep him? Or sign a bunch of high dollar vets that may be a waste if Brady goes after a year? The franchise could be hamstrung for years, and the chances of the Pats winning a SB next year are a lot less than in years past. Antonio Brown could be starting next year and the Pats would still be only the 3rd or 4th favorite in the AFC at best.

Nobody's going to overpay for a 43 year old fossil

Nope. My guess is he gets a bogus offer when in reality it is for 15 per. You just cannot give a 43 year old QB who looked 43 at many times this season. If I were the Pats that is all I would offer max. Time to make choices is now. Sucks but that is the way it is.

Brady insisted the team not be allowed to franchise tag him. The 2020 QB tag is $26,895,000 so not sure why ppl think he will sign for $18M or $20M or even $25M.

Would the team let him walk for $28M? Seems stupid to me.
